Book Synopsis Efficient Factor Selection by : Ronald J. Balvers

Book excerpt: An asset pricing model is customarily evaluated by how well it explains means of returns. But how well the model explains fluctuations of returns is similarly important though often overlooked in the literature. We derive “efficient” factors that combine both objectives and turn out to maximize average time-series (first-pass) R-square for given cross-sectional (second-pass) R-square. Efficient factors work better out of sample and even explain mean returns better than structural models. The reason is that structural models emphasize factors that as a group are close to the tangency portfolio. But this portfolio, by necessity, has relatively low variance that explains individual asset return fluctuations poorly and impedes factor identification. These findings explain many of the puzzling results in empirical asset pricing. Further, intended holding period becomes essential now for model evaluation and shorter holding periods require more emphasis on first-pass fit, which is another key issue overlooked in the literature.

Book Synopsis Human Factors in Effective Counter-Terrorism by : Richard Warnes
Download or read book Human Factors in Effective Counter-Terrorism written by Richard Warnes and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to provide a comparative assessment of the significance of ‘human factors’ in effective counter-terrorism. The phrase ‘human factors’ is used to describe personal relationships, individual capabilities, effective leadership, technical interface, organisational culture and the community engagement necessary to effectively minimise, counter and control the threat of terrorism. Unlike many works in the field, this book is constructed around the input of ‘experienced knowledge’ from over 170 semi-structured interviews of specialist military, policing, intelligence and security practitioners - those actors actually involved in countering terrorism. These practitioners come from seven countries – the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, Israel, Turkey and the United States – all of which have suffered over the years from different types of terrorist threat and responded with a mixture of counter-terrorist measures. Where military practitioners also discussed overseas counter-insurgency measures, that material has been included, since terrorism forms a key aspect of such wider insurgencies. The resulting interview data was analysed through a variant of ‘Grounded Theory’ to identify key emerging themes and issues, both positive and negative, relevant to ‘human factors’ in the individual countries and more generically. This book incorporates the informed operational experiences and insights of the interviewees while seeking to provide examples of successful counter-terrorist measures at the strategic, operational and tactical levels. This book will be of much interest to students of counter-terrorism, defence studies and security studies in general.

Book Synopsis Saving Children from a Life of Crime : Early Risk Factors and Effective Interventions by : Institute of Criminology Cambridge University David P. Farrington Professor of Psychological Criminology
Download or read book Saving Children from a Life of Crime : Early Risk Factors and Effective Interventions written by Institute of Criminology Cambridge University David P. Farrington Professor of Psychological Criminology and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2006-10-25 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After decades of rigorous study in the United States and across the Western world, a great deal is known about the early risk factors for offending. High impulsiveness, low attainment, criminal parents, parental conflict, and growing up in a deprived, high-crime neighborhood are among the most important factors. There is also a growing body of high quality scientific evidence on the effectiveness of early prevention programs designed to prevent children from embarking on a life of crime. Drawing on the latest evidence, Saving Children from a Life of Crime is the first book to assess the early causes of offending and what works best to prevent it. Preschool intellectual enrichment, child skills training, parent management training, and home visiting programs are among the most effective early prevention programs. Criminologists David Farrington and Brandon Welsh also outline a policy strategy--early prevention--that uses this current research knowledge and brings into sharper focus what America's national crime fighting priority ought to be. At a time when unacceptable crime levels in America, rising criminal justice costs, and a punitive crime policy have spurred a growing interest in the early prevention of delinquency, Farrington and Welsh here lay the groundwork for change with a comprehensive national prevention strategy to save children from a life of crime.
