Book excerpt: While constructed wetlands can be a cost-effective method for reducing the export of P from agricultural ecosystems, removal rates vary depending on the wastestream, the substrate, the climate, and the load of nutrients. The objectives of this research were to evaluate substrates that could improve soluble P removal in treatment wetlands, to compare their efficacy both seasonally and under varying loading regimes, and to test the substrates in the laboratory for P adsorption and desorption properties. To compare four substrates for removing soluble P from dairy barnyard run-off, eight 55 m2 subsurface wetland cells were built on ELVI Farms, an 800-head dairy farm in Newark, NY, USA. The four media were (1) a fine loamy, mixed, mesic Glossic Hapludalf, (2) crushed limestone, (3) Norlite (lightweight coarse aggregates of fired shale), and (4) wollastonite (calcium metasilicate) mining tailings. Influent P concentrations in the growing season dropped to 2.9 mg/L, while concentrations in the dormant season rose gradually to a peak of 28.5 mg/L. No significant difference was found in percent removal of soluble P across seasons: neither higher loads nor freezing conditions curtailed removal of P from this wastestream. Over 1.5 years, the ranking of the substrates, from best to worst, was soil (53% P removal)> Norlite (34%)> wollastonite tailings (13%)> limestone (4%). In the laboratory, the ranking of P removal was different: wollastonite> limestone> soil> Norlite. This variation between field and laboratory results may be explained mechanistically. In the laboratory, for soil and Norlite, the mechanism of P removal was adsorption; for wollastonite and limestone, the mechanism was precipitation of calcium phosphates. In the field, however, adsorption was the primary mechanism for all four substrates: precipitation did not occur in the limestone and wollastonite beds, probably because humic, fulvic and phytic acids interfered with the growth of octacalcium phosphate crystals. It is recommended that ELVI Farms use soil, the most adsorptive of the four substrates, as a P purification medium. The design of the treatment system, however, must be changed to accommodate the hydraulic limitations of the soil, which clogged within eleven months.

Phosphorus, typically a nutrient limiting contaminant is responsible for eutrophication and algae blooms in lakes and streams and the wastewater from agricultural, industrial and domestic sources is under continued scrutiny from the regulatory environment. Constructed wetlands mimic natural wetlands and are used worldwide for the removal of nutrients in wastewater streams but the research and applications for removal of phosphorus has lagged behind other nutrients and contaminants. This paper is an extensive literature review of construct wetlands and the ongoing applications for phosphorus removal. This review includes recent research on the mechanisms of removal, an evaluation of different plant species, a discussion of phosphorus partitioning in the wetland environment and a look at the use of chemical additives to improve the removal efficiency. Hybrid constructed wetland systems that closely mimic the biological nutrient removal systems for large scale WWTP facilities are being built around the world to improve effluent water quality and take advantage of the benefits of each type of constructed wetland. Maximizing the removal of phosphorus in wastewater will require a multi-pronged approach that includes biological, chemical and physical removal of the phosphorus in both the design phase and ongoing operation of the constructed wetlands system. Several trends in constructed wetlands phosphorus removal are emerging: the primary removal mechanism for phosphorus removal is accretion and new soil sediments, and the use of chemical additives for precipitate and final removal of phosphorus is required for the removal efficiencies required by regulation. The varied applications and results of constructed wetland systems with respect to phosphorus removal are discussed throughout the paper. Floating island technology, using a buoyant material that supports plants, is a newer unique application of constructed wetlands that can be used to remediate wastewater and remove contaminants. Based on the literature search, a series of experiments to further characterize floating islands and improve the removal of phosphorus from wastewater are recommended using this technology.

Book excerpt: Several small-scale laboratory studies have been performed on phosphorus (P) removal from solution by oxides and hydroxides ofiron. The capacity ofthese oxides and hydroxides to bond phosphate has been recognized for a long time. In recent years, investigations concerning possible use ofthese compounds in constructed systems designed to lower the levels of phosphorus in domestic wastewater have been performed. The focus has been mainly directed towards the use ofhydrous ferric oxides in constructed wetlands and advanced wastewater treatment systems. The objectives ofthis study were to qualitatively and quantitatively characterize phosphorus bonding by hydrous ferric oxides and to simulate a constructed system for removal of orthophosphates. Two approaches were used in the simulated system: 1. Deposition of ferric hydroxide on media (sand or gravel) 2. A composite system formed by mixing of an iron containing material (mill scale) with gravel. Different methods to coat the media were also investigated, and isotherm experiments characterizing the adsorption of phosphorus by ferric hydroxide and mill scale were performed. A synthetic water containing orthophosphates was used as an influent for the constructed system (laboratory column) and the levels ofphosphorus were determined in the effiuent over an extended time period. Both systems (coated media and composite media) showed a phosphorus removal capacity of 50 to 75% from a 5 - 10 mg/L P feed solution. Difficulties in realizing a large simulated coated system have limited exhaustive conclusions concerning application of such a system in a constructed wetland. Leaching of zinc and iron from the gravel mill scale composite system may impose limitations on the use of such a system for the removal of phosphorus. However. based on the results of this study, both coated and composite systems appear promising and warrant further investigation.
