Book excerpt: Model, analyze, and solve vibration problems, using modern computer tools. Featuring clear explanations, worked examples, applications, and modern computer tools, William Palm's Mechanical Vibration provides a firm foundation in vibratory systems. You'll learn how to apply knowledge of mathematics and science to model and analyze systems ranging from a single degree of freedom to complex systems with two and more degrees of freedom. Separate MATLAB sections at the end of most chapters show how to use the most recent features of this standard engineering tool, in the context of solving vibration problems. The text introduces Simulink where solutions may be difficult to program in MATLAB, such as modeling Coulomb friction effects and simulating systems that contain non-linearities. Ample problems throughout the text provide opportunities to practice identifying, formulating, and solving vibration problems. KEY FEATURES Strong pedagogical approach, including chapter objectives and summaries Extensive worked examples illustrating applications Numerous realistic homework problems Up-to-date MATLAB coverage The first vibration textbook to cover Simulink Self-contained introduction to MATLAB in Appendix A Special section dealing with active vibration control in sports equipment Special sections devoted to obtaining parameter values from experimental data

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the set of forces driving the global financial system toward a period of radical transformation and explores the transformational challenges that lie ahead for global and regional or local banks and other financial intermediaries. It is explained how these challenges derive from the newly emerging post-crisis structure of the market and from shadow and digital players across all banking operations. Detailed attention is focused on the impacts of digitalization on the main functions of the financial system, and particularly the banking sector. The author elaborates how an alternative model of banking will enable banks to predict, understand, navigate, and change the external ecosystem in which they compete. The five critical components of this model are data and information mastering; effective use of applied analytics; interconnectivity and “junction playing”; development of new business solutions; and trust and credibility assurance. The analysis is supported by a number of informative case studies. The book will be of interest especially to top and middle managers and employees of banks and financial institutions but also to FinTech players and their advisers and others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the 20th century, German biologist Jakob von Uexküll created the concept of "Umwelt" to denote the environment as experienced by a subject. This concept of environment differs from the idea of passive surroundings and is defined not just by physical surroundings, but is rather a "subjective universe", a space weighted with meaning. Today, neuroscience provides a new way to look at the brain’s capability to create a representation of the world. At the same time behavioural specialists are demonstrating that animals have a richer mental universe than previously known. Philosophical reflection thus finds itself with more experimental and objective data as well. Nearly a century after the publication of von Uexküll’s founding work ("Umwelt und Innenwelt der Tiere" was published in 1909), neurobiologists, psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, ethologists, and philosophers revisit his mail concept at the light of modern science

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this two-day meeting was proposed, it was certainly not conceived as a celebration, much less as a party. However, on reflection, this might have been a wholly appropriate gesture because geostatistical simulation came of age this year: it is now 21 years since it was first proposed and implemented in the form of the turning bands method. The impetus for the original development was the mining industry, principally the problems encountered in mine planning and design based on smoothed estimates which did not reflect the degree of variability and detail present in the real, mined values. The sustained period of development over recent years has been driven by hydrocarbon applications. In addition to the original turning bands method there are now at least six other established methods of geostatistical simulation. Having reached adulthood, it is entirely appropriate that geostatistical simulation should now be subjected to an intense period of reflection and assessment. That we have now entered this period was evident in many of the papers and much of the discussion at the Fontainebleau meeting. Many questions were clearly articulated for the first time and, although many ofthem were not unambiguously answered, their presentation at the meeting and publication in this book will generate confirmatory studies and further research.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Association of American Publishers Professional and Scholarly Publishing Award for Computer Science Over the course of several decades, the Pentagon's Information Processing Techniques Office (IPTO) helped transform computing from a cumbersome enterprise based on batch processing to the instantly interactive, graphically rich, highly intelligent computing of today. With the purpose of improving command and control systems for the military, IPTO researchers strengthened time-sharing, laid the groundwork for graphics and parallel processing, contributed to the study of artificial intelligence, and developed the wide-area network that came to be known as the Internet. Transforming Computer Technology examines these and other developments at the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency in its heyday between 1962 and 1986. The authors show how Pentagon programs affected significant developments in both computer science and engineering. They analyze the management of the office, the origins and growth of important IPTO programs, and the interaction of the staff with the R & D community. They pay special attention to IPTO's role in executing research at the leading edge of computing and networking and in working with the military to transfer that research into practical use. And they show how, by the 1990s, the research results had been assimilated into systems both for the military and for civilian society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In For Love of Matter Freya Mathews challenges basic assumptions of Western science, modern philosophy, and environmental philosophy, arguing that the environmental crisis is a symptom of a larger, metaphysical crisis. Western science rests on the premise that the world is an inert backdrop to human presence rather than a communicative presence in its own right, one capable of dialogical congress with us. Mathews explores the transformative effects of a substitution of the latter, panpsychist premise for the former, materialist one. She suggests that to exist in a dialogical modality is to enter an expanded realm of eros in which the self and world are mutually kindled into a larger, more incandescent state of realization. She argues that any adequate philosophical response to the so-called "environmental crisis" cannot be encompassed within the minor discipline of environmental philosophy but must instead address the full range of existential questions.

Book excerpt: This prayer book was written over a two-year span. The prayers started one night when my daughter and I could not sync our time to pray together on one particular night in March 2017. While preparing for bed, the Lord said to me, "Just write a prayer and put it on Facebook". I did and the rest is history. You are now holding what it is that the Lord has done with these prayers. Each night with the exception of being away from home with no phone service, or during times of fasting, I wrote a prayer each night and posted them on Facebook. I have been told by many people along the way that they do not know how to pray. It is my prayer that this book will be a foundation for those who feel that they do not know how to pray or who simply need a prayer devotional.
