Book excerpt: This study used a dual-task paradigm to describe how noise type may interact with aging and hearing loss to impact speech recognition and listening effort. Three noise types with varying degrees of spectral and/or temporal modulation were used: speech-shaped noise, speech-modulated noise, and three-talker babble. Subject groups included young normal-hearing listeners, older listeners with near-normal hearing, and older listeners with sensorineural hearing loss. An adaptive measure was used to compare the SNR at which 70% sentence recognition was achieved in each noise type, allowing an analysis of the effects of age and hearing loss on the ability to benefit from spectro-temporal glimpsing. A word recall task was implemented in a dual-task paradigm to compare listening effort, while matching overall performance across noise types and subject groups. Results showed no evidence to support the hypothesis that noise type influenced listening effort in any subject group. Results also showed that younger normal-hearing listeners were highly robust to the detrimental effects of noise, while older listeners experienced reduction in listening effort when context was available. Sensorineural hearing loss nullified this benefit from context. This study presented novel findings regarding the effect of noise type on listening effort while overall speech recognition performance was controlled for.

This volume is the product of that study. Book excerpt: Abstract: Understanding speech in noisy and reverberant environments is a task that normal listeners can perform quite well and with which the hearing impaired have great difficulty. Comparing the performance of these two groups of listeners while varying perceptual cues gives insight into the segregation abilities of both normal and impaired auditory systems. The ability of normal and hearing-impaired listeners to use the segregation cues of pitch and spatial separation was measured in a speech intelligibility task, and the detrimental effects of reverberation on those cues was also measured. The target was always simulated as straight ahead (at 0 degrees azimuth). Three spatial configurations of the two masking talkers were simulated: (1) both maskers colocated with the target at 0 degrees; (2) maskers symmetrically placed at +60 and -60 degrees; and (3) both maskers located at +60 degrees azimuth. Pitch contours of all sentences were monotonized with the target always at 100 Hz. Three masking sentence pitch conditions were tested: (1) both at 100 Hz; (2) both at +1 semitone (106 Hz); and (3) both at +4 semitones (126 Hz). The conditions were all tested under simulated anechoic, mild, and moderate reverberation levels. Spatial release was correlated with amount of hearing loss, and decreased with increasing reverberation. Listeners in both groups were able to use the non-spatial segregation cue, pitch, to achieve lower thresholds in all spatial configurations and room conditions. Both segregation cues gave advantages, and the cues combined when both were available, due to the difficult segregation problem the experiment presented. Predictions of benefit gained from head-shadow and detriments due to audiogram thresholds were partially explained by SII model results, although all models failed to account for the variability of performance between subjects. Pitch factors were not included in the model, and thus was unable to predict the ability of subjects to use pitch. Some hearing-impaired listeners were able to get the same or more benefit from pitch as from spatial separation, suggesting non-spatial segregation cues could be exploited to improve speech intelligibility in hearing-impaired listeners in complex environments.

Book excerpt: Purpose: This study was designed to investigate (1) the effects of age and hearing loss on auditory neural coding, (2) interrelationships between auditory evoked potentials (AEP) taking place at early and later stage of auditory processing, and (3) electrophysiological correlates of age-related declines in speech-in-noise perception. Methods: 30 young normal-hearing adults (YNH, M=21 years), 26 older adults with near-normal hearing (ONH, M=63.9 years) and 26 older adults with hearing loss (OHL, M=72.8 years) participated in the study. AMLR Pa and N1, P2 and N2 of ALLRs were recorded using two-channel electrode system. 500 Hz tone burst and syllable /ba/ were presented in quiet and in babble at the level of 90 Leq (dBA), accompanied by babble at the level of 65 Leq (dBA). Revised Speech Perception in Noise (R-SPIN) test was conducted to measure speech-in-noise perception. Results: ONH listeners demonstrated significantly enhanced Pa and N1 amplitudes and significantly prolonged Pa, P2 and N2 latencies compared with YNH listeners, indicating the effects of aging. OHI group demonstrated significantly prolonged N2 latencies compared with ONH group, indicating the effects of hearing loss. OHI listeners demonstrated significantly enhanced amplitudes and significantly prolonged latencies across all AEP components compared with YNH listeners, indicating that the combined effects may have stronger impacts on age-related changes in AEP morphology. Significant correlations between the amplitudes of Pa and each component of ALLRs were found in ONH and OHI groups, indicating that enhanced Pa amplitudes correspond with enhanced amplitudes of cortical responses in older listeners. Significant correlations between latencies of Pa and each component of ALLRs were found in all groups, indicating that prolonged Pa latencies correspond with prolonged latencies of cortical responses in all listeners. In both ONH and OHI groups, lower R-SPIN-LP scores are significantly correlated with enhanced Pa, P2, and N2 amplitudes and prolonged N2 latencies, particularly for syllable /ba/. Discussion and Conclusions: Interplay between effects of aging and hearing loss may have stronger impacts on morphological changes in the AEP waveforms. Amplitude-based interrelationships reflect age-related changes in a transfer of neural information between subcortical and cortical auditory network. Latency-based interrelationships indicate the association between neural timings at subcortical and cortical levels. Age-related enhancements of Pa, P2 and N2 amplitudes and age-related prolongations of N2 latencies may serve as electrophysiological correlates of age-related declines in SIN perception.
