Book excerpt: A program is being conducted to study the effects of engine response, rotor inertia, rpm control, excess power, and vertical damping on specific maneuvers included in nap-of-the-Earth (NOE) operations. Specifically, this study concentrates on the helicopter configuration with an rpm-governed gas-turbine engine and expands on handling qualities-criteria data by focusing on aspects peculiar to rotary-wing and NOE operations. This paper summarizes results of three moving-based piloted simulation studies and explores the frequency characteristics of helicopter thrust response which set it apart from other VTOL types. Power-system response is affected by both the engine governor response and the level of rotor inertia. However, results indicate that, with unlimited power, variations in engine response can have a significant effect on pilot rating, whereas changes in rotor inertia, in general, do not. Results also show that any pilot interaction required to maintain proper rpm control can significantly degrade handling qualities. Data for variations in vertical damping and collective sensitivity are compared with existing handling-qualities specifications, MIL-F-83300 and AGARD 577, and show a need for higher minimums for both damping and sensitivity for the bob-up task.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A piloted simulation designed to examine the effects of terrain proximity and control system design on helicopter performance during one-on-one air combat maneuvering (ACM) is discussed. The NASA Ames Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS) and the Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) systems were modified to allow two aircraft to be independently piloted on a single CGI data base. Engagements were begun with the blue aircraft already in a tail-chase position behind the red, and also with the two aircraft originating from positions unknown to each other. Maneuvering was very aggressive and safety requirements for minimum altitude, separation, and maximum bank angles typical of flight test were not used. Results indicate that the presence of terrain features adds an order of complexity to the task performed over clear air ACM and that a mix of attitude and rate command-type Stability and Control Augmentation System (SCAS) design may be desirable. The simulation system design, the flight paths flown, and the tactics used were compared favorably by the evaluation pilots to actual flight test experiments. Keywords include: Helicopter; Rotorcraft; Air combat; NOE(Nap Of the Earth); Flight control systems.

Book excerpt: This report documents the effort by Arvin/Calspan Corporation to formulate a revision of MIL-H-8501A in terms of Mission-Oriented Flying Qualities Requirements for Military Rotorcraft. Emphasis is placed on development of a specification structure which will permit addressing Operational Missions and Flight Phases, Flight Regions, Classification of Required Operational Capability, Categorization of Flight Phases, and Levels of Flying Qualities. A number of definitions are established to permit addressing the rotorcraft state, flight envelopes, environments, and the conditions under which degraded flying qualities are permitted. Tentative requirements are drafted for Required Operational Capability Class I. Also included is a Background Information and Users Guide for the draft specification structure proposed for the MIL-H-8501A revision. The report also contains a discussion of critical data gaps and attempts to prioritize these data gaps and to suggest experiments that should be performed to generate data needed to support formulation of quantitative design criteria for the additional Operational capability Classes II, III, and IV.

The presence of the ground changes the aerodynamic characteristics of the rotor and the flow environment becomes much more complex compared with that of flight out-of-ground effect (OGE) and hence the behavior of the rotor wake in the vicinity of the ground is challenging to predict. Under in-ground-effect(IGE) conditions, the wake collides with the ground and causes a significant perturbation to the flow near the blade. Significant interactions between the main rotor wake and the ground have been associated with the formation and passage of the ground vortex in forward flight. The presence of a ground vortex affects the handling qualities of the helicopter. The aim of this research is to capture the physics of the flow features and dynamics of ground effect flows around a rotorcraft, provide an understanding of the rotor wake/vortices near the ground, and generate rigorous models to accurately predict handling qualities, loads and moments acting on the rotor and the power requirements. The wake structure after periodicity is reached is obtained for hover and different forward flight speeds. Also, the nature of the flowfield, as well as the formation of the ground vortex, is understood by obtaining the velocity contours on a longitudinal plane containing the rotor blade after periodicity is obtained. The unsteadiness in the velocities is quantified by obtaining the RMS deviation in velocities on different planes containing the tail rotor around the rotor disk simulating the various kinds of flight. Thrust and power requirements on the rotor disk have been predicted and have been successfully validated by comparison with experimental results obtained from Georgia Institute of Technology.
