In much of the western United States, riparian zones are shifting from native woody and herbaceous species to invasive grass dominated ecosystems that may alter hydrology, including changes to stream flow. Compared to the woody species they often replace, dense grass stands may have higher rates of growth (productivity) and water loss through leaves (transpiration), yet may access shallower water sources and thus reduce stream flow. In eastern Washington, many streams experience low flow that degrades water quality, concentrates pollutants, and reduces habitat. Most of these streams' riparian zones have extensive stands of reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea). Reed canary grass was historically planted for erosion control and as a forage crop, but its ability to invade and create monotypic stands has allowed it to out compete native vegetation in riparian areas throughout much of the temperate United States. My goal is to determine the effect of reed canary grass on the ecohydrology of riparian zones along low order streams in a semi-arid region. I conducted vegetation, groundwater, and stream flow surveys at nine sites along four watersheds to determine community composition and hydrologic regime measured the length of the growing season for nine riparian species. I measured the amount of biomass and calculated the amount of photosynthetic surface for dense stands of nine riparian species. The amount of water used by different species was determined by measuring transpiration rates of reed canary grass and other riparian species throughout the growing season. Hydrogen and oxygen isotopes from different water sources (stream water and deep groundwater) were used to determine the proportion of water sources use by different plants species. Reed canary grass was found with greater cover than other riparian species on low elevation geomorphic positions in the riparian zone. It had the longest growing season by two weeks. Although its transpiration rates per unit leaf area are not exceptional compared to other species, its high specific leaf area and ability to produce dense stands of photosynthetic biomass results in more photosynthetic surface through which to transpire water than any other riparian species. Reed canary grass was found to rely heavily on surface water sources along different elevations in the riparian zone. My results implicate reed canary grass as a major factor in the regional low stream flow during the growing season. Although the presence of reed canary grass can add some benefits to a riparia buffer, I present strong evidence that it is altering the ecohydrology of these ecosystems. Reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea) is an herbaceous species that invades riparian fringes and wetlands throughout North America, including Beanblossom Bottoms - a wetland complex in south-central Indiana. In riparian systems, vegetation serves as habitat for terrestrial insects, and influences inputs of allochthonous material to streams. Although several studies have examined the influence of falling leaf litter from invasive plants on stream ecosystems, little is known about how invasive riparian plants may affect cross-ecosystem subsidies of terrestrial arthropods. This study used two sets of paired stream-reaches in Sonoma County, California, to examine differences in riparian arthropod communities (using pan traps) and terrestrial arthropod subsidies to streams (using floating pan traps) between invaded and native riparian systems. Total arthropod abundance and richness were higher in invaded sites than in native sites, although richness was similar after performing a rarefaction analysis. Terrestrial arthropod subsidies were similar among native and invaded sites but varied substantially with time throughout the summer season. This study revealed the influence of Himalayan blackberry on arthropod communities was less than or equal to the differences between streams. Invasive plants affect both terrestrial arthropod communities and the availability of allochthonous prey in streams during summer, with implications for the restoration of riparian zones and conservation of aquatic insectivores, such as salmonids.

Book excerpt: Phalaris arundinacea (reed canarygrass) is a grass species native to Eurasia and the Pacific Northwest of the U.S. By nature it is an aggressive species and particularly invasive in areas with abundant light and nutrient resources. Repeated introduction of cultivars to the U.S. for purposes of feedstock and soil stabilization particularly around farmlands from the 1850s onward allowed cross-pollination with native cultivars to occur. This resulted in more aggressive phenotypes capable of forming monotypic stands. The susceptibility of wetland areas to invasion has become particularly problematic in the Pacific Northwest and the Midwest. One widely recognized method of control for reed canarygrass growth and establishment is the use of shade. This study proposed the use of artificial shade in combination with the planting of native grass species in an attempt to diversify a wet meadow dominated by reed canarygrass. Three-way ANOVAs were utilized to analyze shade, disturbance patch size, and mowing as treatment levels. Results showed reed canarygrass to be noticeably impacted by shading while one native grass species successfully established itself under the same conditions. Given a sufficient length of time, diversity of this area could potentially be increased both aboveground and in the seed bank.

Phalaris arundinacea, reed canary grass, is a prevalent wetland invasive species consumed by geese, muskrats, and snails. We lack a clear understanding of how herbivory impacts P. arundinacea's invasion potential. Therefore, I sought to understand the effect of herbivory by generalist macrograzers and micrograzers on the competitive dominance of P. arundinacea in created wetlands, especially the degree to which herbivory alters the competitive relationship between P. arundinacea and Typha latifolia (broadleaf cattail). To address this enclosure/exclosure cages were constructed in June 2013. Half of the plots contained only P. arundinacea and half were placed along the edge between P. arundinacea and T. latifolia. In caged treatments, amber snails (Succinea putris) were either included or removed. Control plots without cages assessed the effect of larger grazers. I predicted that herbivory would negatively impact the growth of P. arundinacea, and mixed plots would allow T. latifolia to spread into the P. arundinacea zone. Choice experiments were conducted with Branta canadensis, Canada geese, and S. putris to evaluate their preference for P. arundinacea or T. latifolia. I did not find any significant differences in P. arundinacea growth due to grazing but competition with T. latifolia did impact P. arundinacea. Edge plots at RIT had a significantly reduced growth rate compared to stems from plots containing P. arundinacea only. In choice experiments, geese showed a preference for P. arundinacea over Typha, whereas snails showed no preference. Despite the observed preference, I was unable to demonstrate effects of herbivory in the field. Herbivory appears to play a minor role in P. arundinacea's success as an invasive plant in created wetlands, with other factors, such as competition for light and nutrients of potentially greater importance."--Abstract.
