The first phase of an effort to determine the relationship between physiologic heat stress and flight performance was conducted using the new NAWCADPAX flight simulator installed in an environmental chamber. Performance scores declined after subjects were exposed to the hot alert conditions relative to control, though the difference was not statistically significant. Correlation analysis indicated a marginal relationship between the change in performance and rectal and mean skin temperatures (r = 0.59 and 0.55, respectively). The experimental design did not account for the increased generation of metabolic heat associated with straining against high G forces, though it did include radiant heat loads. The next phase will include physical work in the cockpit to account for this additional factor.

Book excerpt: A cooling vest (CV) and a Rapid Thermal Exchange (RTX(Registered)) hand cooling device were tested in a thermal chamber simulating aircrew pre-flight walk around at 95 F. Physiologic cooling protection, cognitive performance and mood changes were studied. Twelve male subjects were tested. Rectal and skin temperatures as well as cognitive performance and mood changes were assessed. The chamber was heated to 35 degrees C with a relative humidity of 85% and the subjects walked on a treadmill for 20 min. A period of slow cooling down over 75 minutes followed. The subjects weight was recorded before and after each experiment. Three different conditions were tested: a control without any cooling device, a Rapid Thermal Exchange hand cooling device (RTX(Registered)) and a RFD(Registered) Beaufort Liquid conditioning Vest (CV). The CV provided significant cooling benefit as seen by core temperature, weight loss, heart rate, subjective heat and mood scores, compared to a control condition without any cooling devices. While RTX(Registered) appeared to have some slight benefits compared to control (i.e. mean values tended to fall in between control and cooling vest), there was little statistical evidence (other than weight loss) to support this tendency. The heat stress induced in this study (i.e. simulating aircrew pre-flight walk around) was moderate and not severe as some other operational environments could be (e.g. for flight-line maintenance crew). Therefore, cognition was not impaired by the heat stress generated in this study, and, thus, no observed improvement could be seen from the two cooling conditions.

Resource cutbacks combined with increased operational tempos, sustained operations, and night fighting could exacerbate the problem. Extended wakefulness and circadian factors can be especially problematic in military aviation where mission demands sometimes necessitate flights as long as 17-44 hours. To effectively counter fatigue in such operations, the effects of this threat must be objectively measured and understood. This study assessed F-117A pilots during a 37-hour period of continuous wakefulness. Although none of the pilots crashed, substantial decrements were found in flight-skills, reaction times, mood, and brain activation as early as after the 26% hour of continuous wakefulness. The greatest flight degradations occurred after 27-33 hours awake, even though many pilots believed their worst performance was earlier. The decrements found in this relatively-benign test environment may be more serious under operational conditions unless personnel anticipate the most dangerous times and administer valid fatigue countermeasures.

Book excerpt: Firefighting is a physically demanding occupation requiring intermittent bouts of work resulting in increased levels of cardiovascular and thermal strain, while making decisions requiring higher order cognitive abilities e.g. working memory, sustained attention, reaction time, spatial awareness, and information processing. These activities can take place in dangerous conditions with elevated temperatures imposing external stressors on physiological and cognitive function. Previous research has examined the impact of heat stress on cognitive function in general, but the specific influence on firefighters wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is not well understood. Specific domains of cognitive function can be assessed using computer-based neuropsychological testing batteries, such as the Cambridge Neuropsychological Automated Testing Battery (CANTAB). The CANTAB automatically records the response measures for each test and provides consistent feedback in between trials. Although the CANTAB is well established the cognitive domains it tests may not adequately capture the complexity of the specific decision making required of firefighters while on-duty. The use of serious game technology provides a possible solution to develop a more ecologically valid assessment tool capable of evaluating the specific decision making tasks required of firefighters at an emergency scenario. Thus, the current thesis aimed to evaluate the effects of exercise-induced heat stress on cognitive function in firefighters using the CANTAB testing battery and a recently developed serious game simulating the decision making tasks required of firefighters in a two-storey residential fire while walking on a treadmill. Additionally, the reliability of repeated CANTAB administrations during treadmill walking was measured and found to have reasonable overall reliability. Decrements in cognitive function (working memory and executive function were observed at a core temperature of 38.5°C and restored following an active cooling recovery protocol. However, when decision making was evaluated using the serious game scenario, task specific performance deficits were not seen during treadmill walking but impairment in memory recall was found following the active cooling recovery protocol. These findings provide fire service personnel with information regarding the cognitive implications of heat stress and the potential use of serious games to evaluate and train cognitive function during exposure to environmental stressors.

Estimation of constructs like working memory load or memory capacity from neurophysiological or psychophysiological signals would enable adaptive systems to respond to cognitive states experienced by an operator and trigger responses designed to support task performance (e.g. by simplifying the exercises of a tutor system when the subject is overloaded, or by shutting down distractions from the mobile phone). The determination of cognitive states like working memory load is also useful for automated testing/assessment or for usability evaluation. While there exists a large body of research work on neural and physiological correlates of cognitive functions like working memory activity, fewer publications deal witt the application of this research with respect to single-trial detection and real-time estimation of cognitive functions in complex, realistic scenarios. Single-trial classifiers based on brain activity measurements such as electroencephalography, functional near-infrared spectroscopy, physiological signals or eye tracking have the potential to classify affective or cognitive states based upon short segments of data. For this purpose, signal processing and machine learning techniques need to be developed and transferred to real-world user interfaces. The goal of this Frontiers Research Topic was to advance the State-of-the-Art in signal-based modeling of cognitive processes. We were especially interested in research towards more complex and realistic study designs, for example collecting data in the wild or investigating the interaction between different cognitive processes or signal modalities. Bringing together many contributions in one format allowed us to look at the state of convergence or diversity regarding concepts, methods, and paradigms.
