There is now an extensive body of research on the educational strategies of the white middle classes but a silence exists around the emergence of the Black middle classes and their experiences, priorities, and actions in relation to education. This book focuses on middle-class families of Black Caribbean heritage. Drawing on rich qualitative data from nearly 80 in-depth interviews with Black Caribbean middle-class parents, the internationally renowned contributors reveal how these parents attempt to navigate their children successfully through the school system, and defend them against low expectations and other manifestations of discrimination. Chapters identify when, how and to what extent parents deploy the financial, cultural and social resources available to them as professional, middle class individuals in support of their children’s academic success and emotional well-being. Book excerpt: Parent involvement in their childrens education and school life was studied in England through a telephone survey of 2,109 households. Around 1 in 3 parents (29%) felt very involved in their childs school life, and primary school parents were more likely to feel this way than secondary school parents. Mothers were more likely to say that they were very involved than were fathers. Around 72% of all parents agreed that they wanted more involvement, and a third definitely agreed. Among the barriers to involvement, parents cited the competing demands in their lives such as work commitments, demands of other children, childcare difficulties, and lack of time generally. Almost all parents were happy with the schools attitude toward them, with a large majority finding the school welcoming (94%) and willing to involve them (84%). Parents particularly value face-to-face contact with teachers, but a significant minority thought that they would be labeled trouble makers if they talked too much. Parents were generally happy with the quality of written communications coming from schools, although a significant minority (27%) thought that the general information was spoiled by jargon. Many parents were not aware of the labels given to recent educational initiatives, and 35% did not recognize the term Home School Agreement, even though all had been invited to sign one. Book excerpt: Behavioral engagement at school has been cited as an avenue for improving low academic performance and decreasing boredom and disaffection among students and dropout rate. What we don't know is how dimensions of parent involvement and students' perceived academic competence contribute to behavioral engagement at school. Specifically, the present study contributed to the limited research on the mechanisms responsible for the influences of the aforementioned variables on students' academic related outcomes. Participants consisted of a sample of 637 elementary students from a larger sample of 784 academically at-risk and ethnically and linguistically diverse first grade students recruited from three school districts (i.e., two rural and one urban) for a longitudinal study focused on the impact of grade retention on academic achievement. Participants' behavioral engagement, parent school-based involvement, and parents' perceptions about the school were rated by their teachers and parents. Three separate Structural Equation Model (SEM) analyses were conducted, one for each dimension of parent involvement. Results suggest that perceived academic competence does not mediate the relationship between these dimensions of parent involvement and behavioral engagement. However, there were expected within-wave associations between study variables, further supporting concurrent relationships between dimensions of parent involvement, academic competence, and behavioral engagement. Findings have implications for researching more indirect forms of parent involvement and their impact on children's academic competence and behavioral engagement.
