This book was released on 2006-03-23 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the seventh in a series of titles from the National Research Council that addresses the effects of exposure to low dose LET (Linear Energy Transfer) ionizing radiation and human health. Updating information previously presented in the 1990 publication, Health Effects of Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation: BEIR V, this book draws upon new data in both epidemiologic and experimental research. Ionizing radiation arises from both natural and man-made sources and at very high doses can produce damaging effects in human tissue that can be evident within days after exposure. However, it is the low-dose exposures that are the focus of this book. So-called “late” effects, such as cancer, are produced many years after the initial exposure. This book is among the first of its kind to include detailed risk estimates for cancer incidence in addition to cancer mortality. BEIR VII offers a full review of the available biological, biophysical, and epidemiological literature since the last BEIR report on the subject and develops the most up-to-date and comprehensive risk estimates for cancer and other health effects from exposure to low-level ionizing radiation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cellular and biochemical basis for the cumulative damage manifested in the immature and mature female rats during their maintenance in the selected low level gamma radiation environments were studied. Frequent quantitative measurements were made of the cellular composition of blood and blood forming tissues and of the major protein components of serum. Massive recovery of splenic erythropoiesis under continuous radiation exposure in the absence of marrow recovery was noted. This pointed to a potential role of the spleen for survival under the experimental conditions used, and comparisons of splenectomized with non-splenectomized animals were also performed. Experiments have been started to provide information on post-radiation survival after continuous exposure to ascertain late effects of radiation including stress situations such as heat and cold. Book excerpt: The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) was estab lished in 1978 to stimulate and support scientific research and educational programs related to nutrition, toxicology, and food safety, and to encourage cooperation in these programs among scientists in universities, industry, and government agencies to assist in the resolution of health and safety issues. To supplement and enhance these efforts, ILSI has made a major commitment to supporting programs to harmon ize toxicologic testing, to advance a more uniform inter pretation of bioassay results worldwide, to promote a common understanding of lesion classifications, and to encourage wide discussion of these topics among scien tists. The Monographs on the Pathology of Laboratory Ani mals are designed to facilitate communication among those involved in the safety testing of foods, drugs, and chemicals. The complete set will cover all organ systems and is intended for use by pathologists, toxicologists, and others concerned with evaluating toxicity and carcinogen icity studies. The international nature of the project - as reflected in the composition of the editorial board and the diversity of the authors and editors - strengthens our ex pectations that understanding and cooperation will be im proved worldwide through the series. Alex Malaspina President International Life Sciences Institute Preface This book, on the hemopoietic system, is the eighth volume of a set prepared under the sponsorship of the International Life Sciences In stitute (ILSI).

Book excerpt: This book reevaluates the health risks of ionizing radiation in light of data that have become available since the 1980 report on this subject was published. The data include new, much more reliable dose estimates for the A-bomb survivors, the results of an additional 14 years of follow-up of the survivors for cancer mortality, recent results of follow-up studies of persons irradiated for medical purposes, and results of relevant experiments with laboratory animals and cultured cells. It analyzes the data in terms of risk estimates for specific organs in relation to dose and time after exposure, and compares radiation effects between Japanese and Western populations.

Book excerpt: Bone Marrow transplantation or Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is a life saving procedure in a number of diseases, hematological and non hematological, which fail alternative medical management or have no other treatment options. It has transformed the lives of thousands of patients and their families around the world battling with fatal or debilitating diseases. There are many unique aspects of bone marrow transplantation which makes it very different from solid organ transplants. There is an enormous amount of research going on in this field both at clinical and basic science levels. With the rapidly changing world and field of transplantation, there is a need for an authoritative and up to date resource for transplant professionals. This book titled Contemporary Bone Marrow Transplantation aims to be a reference text comprehensively covering various facets of hematopoietic stem cell transplants with latest insights about the technique and basic science behind it . The book is the product of collective effort of transplant professionals round the world, and will reflect their experience as well as the current standard of care practices in Stem cell transplantation. The book will be divided into different sections focusing on the basic science of bone marrow transplant, the technical aspects of the procedure itself and the supportive care of transplant patients. There will also be a section each on epidemiology, upcoming trends and also case studies , which will discuss real case scenarios from the experience of the authors, to illustrate the practical challenges in managing bone marrow transplant recipients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how stress – either psychological or physical – can activate and/or paralyse human innate or adaptive immunity. Adequate immunity is crucial for maintaining health, both on Earth and in space. During space flight, human physiology is specifically challenged by complex environmental stressors, which are most pronounced during lunar or interplanetary missions. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the book identifies the impact of these stressors – the space exposome – on immunity as a result of (dys-)functions of specific cells, organs and organ networks. These conditions (e.g. gravitation changes, radiation, isolation/confinement) affect immunity, but at the same time provide insights that may help to prevent, diagnose and address immune-related health alterations. Written by experts from academia, space agencies and industry, the book is a valuable resource for professionals, researchers and students in the field of medicine, biology and technology. The chapters “The Impact of Everyday Stressors on the Immune System and Health”, “Stress and Radiation Responsiveness” and “Assessment of Radiosensitivity and Biomonitoring of Exposure to Space adiation” are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation Pathology is an up-to-date compendium of the effects of ionizing radiation on human tissues. It will be of great value to radiation oncologists, pathologists, and other professionals. The early chapters deal with basic science: physics, radiobiology, genetics, etc. The circumstances of human exposures (therapeutic, accidental, warfare) are then considered in the light of extensive epidemiological data. Acute radiation syndromes and radiation cardiogenesis are described in detail, including recent information on mechanisms of oncogenesis. For the benefit of readers who are not radiation oncologists, two chapters outline the current uses of radiation in therapy and in diagnosis, including the various applications of radionuclides. The bulk of the text deals with radiopathology and its morphologic expression. An overview orients the reader and classifies the main types of lesions. The chapters on specific organs or organ systems are consistently divided into sections to facilitate rapid retrieval of information on: normal structure, tolerance doses, experimental studies, morphology and pathogenesis, and clinical manifestations. The authors' lucid, well-organized descriptions will inform radiation oncologists about the types of injury to be expected, and will guide pathologists in making differential diagnoses.
