Book excerpt: "An experimental investigation was made of the effects of internal pressure upon the buckling of thin circular cylindrical shells under axial compression. A comparison was made of the experimental and theoretical results; the latter were derived from the large-deflection theory. Results showed that the internal pressure had an appreciable strengthening effect upon the buckling of the cylindrical shell. The comparison showed that the experimental results were lower than the theoretical results for a given internal pressure. The discrepancy between the results can be expected since there were factors not included in the theory: imperfections, end conditions, lengths, and material irregularities"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to clarify the whole aspect of the basic problems concerning the elastic stability of of circular cylindrical shells under typical loading conditions. The book deals with buckling, postbuckling and initial postbuckling problems under one of the three fundamental loads, that is, torsion, pressure and compression. The emphases are placed on the accurate analysis and comprehensive numeral results for the buckling problem, experimental verification of the theoretical analysis for the postbuckling problem and clarification of the range of applicability of the perturbation method for the analysis of initial postbuckling behaviors and imperfection sensitivity. The problems under typical combined loads as well as the influence of the contained liquid are also clarified.

Book excerpt: The effect of axial elastic restrain on the instability of a circular cylindrical shell under uniform axial compression is analysed by a Rayleigh Ritz approach within the bounds of linear theory. The effect is calculated for a wide range of parameters and design curves are presented for the percentage increase in critical load. The analysis is carried out for restraints which are active from the beginning of loading and for such which come into action only at the onset of buckling. (Author).

Book excerpt: The effect of internal pressure on the stability of thin walled cylinders under pure bending is investigated by means of modified Donnell equation. The results indicate that, unlike the results for the case of pressurized cylinders under compression, the critical maximum compression stress due to bending increases with internal pressure. The theoretically predicted increases are much less, however, than those obtained experimentally. (Author).

Book excerpt: A set of uncoupled differential equations of equilibrium based on Sanders' assumptions was developed which includes the effects of the prestresses. Both the Sanderstype equations and Donnell's equations are solved for the buckling pressure of shells under laterial and hydrostatic pressure. It is found that restriction of the axial displacement has considerable influence upon the buckling pressure. Moreover, the more rigorous Sanders-type equations yield lower buckling pressures than Donnell's equations. (Author).

Book excerpt: The buckling stress of axially compressed thin-walled circular cylindrical shells of finite length is derived from the classical small-deflection equations for nine possible combinations of edge support conditions. It turns out that the effect upon the critical stress of the length-todiameter ratio of the shell is small except in some cases when the shell is very short. On the other hand, changes in the details of the edge support can lead to reduction factors of 1/2 or less to be applied to the classical value of the critical stress.

Book excerpt: A summary is presented of recent closed-form as well as numerical solutions of the buckling problem of thinwalled circular cylindrical shells subjected to uniform axial compression. The ratio of the critical stress to the classical value of the critical stress has been calculated for nine different combinations of boundary conditions. The minimal values of theling stress ratios are for rigid end fixation and 0.5 for simple supports, while in the case of free ends the buckling stress ratio can be very small. The large effect on the buckling stress of small changes in the boundary conditions is proposed as one of the reasons for the large scatter in the results of bukling expments. (Author).

Book excerpt: Thin-walled metal shell structures are highly efficient in their use of material, but they are particularly sensitive to failure by buckiling. Many different forms of buckling can occur for different geometries and different loading conditions. Because this field of knowledge is both complex and industrially important, it is of great interest and concern in a wide range of industries. This book presents a compilation and synthesis of a wealth of research, experience and knowledge of the subject. Information that was previously widely scattered throughout the literature is assembled in a concise and convenient form that is easy to understand, and state-of-the-art research findings are thoroughly examined. This book is useful for those involved in the structural design of silos, tanks, pipelines, biodigestors, chimneys, towers, offshore platforms, aircraft and spacecraft. Buckling of Thin Metal Shells is essential reading for designers, researchers and code writers involved with thin-walled metal shell structures.
