Book excerpt: Interfacial damage induced by relative fiber/matrix sliding was found to occur in the bridged zone of unidirectional SCS-6/Ti-24Al-11Nb intermetallic matrix composite specimens subjected to fatigue crack growth conditions. The degree of interfacial damage was not uniform along the bridged crack wake. Higher damage zones were observed near the machined notch in comparison to the crack tip. The interfacial friction shear strength, ?f, measured in the crack wake using pushout testing revealed lower values than the as-received interface. Interfacial wear also reduced the strength of the bridging fibers. The reduction in fiber strength is thought to be a function of the magnitude of relative fiber/matrix displacements and the degree of interfacial damage. Furthermore, two different fiber bridging models were used to predict the influence of bridging on the fatigue crack driving force. The shear lag model required a variable ?f in the crack wake (reflecting the degradation of the interface) before its predictions agreed with trends exhibited by the experimental data. The fiber pressure model did an excellent job in predicting both the FCG data and the ?COD in the bridged zone even though it does not require a knowledge of ?f.

Book excerpt: An approach has been developed that includes the effects of interfacial wear on the fiber-bridging behavior of titanium matrix composites during fatigue crack propagation. This approach uses a Coulomb friction-based fiber-bridging model in which the effect of fiber surface roughness on the clamping stress between the fiber and matrix is included. A previously developed wear model has been incorporated into this bridging model as a means to determine the reduction of the fiber surface roughness amplitude during fatigue cycling. As the roughness decreases, its contribution to the clamping stress also decreases, resulting in a lower interfacial shear stress. In order to include this effect in model fatigue crack growth rates, the combined Coulomb friction and wear models have been applied to a discrete composite model formulation. Crack growth predictions were then performed using a single set of input parameters by allowing the fiber surface roughness to decrease due to wear over a discrete increment of fatigue crack geometry based on bridging conditions determined by the composite model. These predictions correlated very well with experimental results for different loading conditions, especially those at relatively high crack growth rates.

A fatigue cracking map for several unidirectional SCS-6-fiber-reinforced titanium and titanium aluminide composites under tension-tension fatigue loading has been developed. The map is constructed based upon the fiber strength to interfacial shear strength ratio versus the applied maximum stress intensity factor. Also, the effect of fiber bridging on the effective crack driving force in the matrix is analyzed using the shear-lag model and finite element analysis.

Book excerpt: The effect of the interfacial thickness of the reaction layer on the interfacial shear properties and the tensile strength of double carbon-coated SCS-6 SiC fiber in Ti-15Mo-5Zr-3Al alloy matrix composite was examined. The major reaction layer thickness, that is, titanium-carbide (TiC) layer thickness, varied with heat-exposure temperature and time, respectively, and the resultant mean thickness of the reaction layer of the composite ranged from 0.4 to 1.7 ?m. The critical interfacial toughness, Gic, and the mean shear sliding resistance, ?s were evaluated by the thin specimen pushout technique. Tensile strength of the silicon-carbide (SiC) fiber extracted from the titanium alloy matrix before and after the heat exposure was determined in relationship to the thickness of the reaction layer. The critical interface toughness, Gic, for the failure of the root of the reaction layer was ?4 J/m2, and the average shear sliding resistance of the interface, ?s, was 102 to 118 MPa. The interfacial shear mechanical properties were adequate to prevent failure of the fiber due to the stress concentration caused by cracks that formed first in the reaction layer. The results showed that when the growth of reaction layer was within 1.7 ?m, the mean strength of the extracted fiber was unaffected by the existence of the reaction layer because of weak bonding between it and the fiber. However, with the increase of the reaction layer thickness, the strength distribution of the extracted fiber tended to Weibull bimodal distribution.

Book excerpt: An experimental study was conducted to examine the effects of high temperature/high frequency loading on the crack growth behavior in titanium composites. Fatigue crack growth tests were performed on the unidirectional SM 1240/TIMETAL-21S composite in air environment at three different temperatures: 24, 500, and 650?gC with a loading frequency of 10 Hz and a stress ratio of 0.1. Tests were also carried out in vacuum and on aged specimens. In all the tests, the crack length was measured continuously while the crack opening displacement (COD) was measured at discrete positions along the crack length. Results show that, at all temperatures, the crack progresses in two sequential stages; a stage in which the crack growth rate decreases as the crack length increases followed by a stage characterized by an accelerated crack growth rate. The first stage corresponds to a crack-bridging condition and is the focus of the analysis in this paper. In additional to COD measurements, the microstructural features associated with the fracture process during this stage was examined by scanning electron microscopy with emphasis being placed on the matrix crack morphology, debonding location, temperature, and environmental influences on the fiber coatings. An analytical procedure, employing concepts of the theory of fracture mechanics and micromechanics analysis of the stress state along bridging fibers, was applied in order to calculate the fiber-bridging stress, the frictional shear stress, and the effective stress intensity factor. Results of this work suggest that the fiber-bridging stress and the frictional shear stress are variables along the crack length and are test temperature dependents. Furthermore, it was concluded that both the crack-tip opening displacement and the effective stress intensity factor can be used as measurements of the crack-tip driving force in the crack-bridging stage. Based on the experimental and analytical results collected in this study, a bridging damage mechanism under the loading condition specified here is suggested. This mechanism argues that the effect of temperature on the high frequency crack growth process is established through the temperature-related modification of the frictional shear stress and the resulting adjustment of the internal stress state in the debonded regions of the bridging fibers.

Book excerpt: Several fiber bridging models were reviewed and applied in this research to study the matrix fatigue crack growth behavior in center notched [0]8 SCS-6/Ti-15-3 and [0]4 SCS-6/Ti-6AI-4V titanium matrix composites (TMCs). Observations revealed that fatigue damage consisted primarily of matrix cracks and fiber-matrix interfacial failure in the unidirectional TMC. Fiber-matrix interface failure included fracture of the brittle reaction zone and cracking between the two carbon-rich fiber coatings. Intact fibers in the wake of the matrix cracks reduce the stress intensity factor range. Thus, an applied stress intensity factor range (?Kapp=?Spa) is inappropriate to characterize matrix crack growth behavior. Fiber bridging models were used to determine the matrix stress intensity factor range in the unidirectional TMC. In these models, the fibers in the wake of the crack are idealized as a closure pressure. An unknown constant frictional shear stress is assumed to act along the debond or slip length of the bridging fibers. In this study, the frictional shear stress was used as a curve fitting parameter to available data (crack growth data, crack opening displacement (COD) data, and debond length data). Large variations in the frictional shear stress required to fit the experimental data indicate that the fiber bridging models in their present form lack predictive capabilities. However, these models provide an efficient and relatively simple engineering method for conducting parametric studies of the matrix crack growth behavior based on constituent properties.

Book excerpt: This paper considers the experimental characterization of crack growth from unbridged defects in fiber-reinforced titanium metal matrix composites subjected to cyclic loading by the use of fracture mechanics parameters. The conditions under which parameters such as the nominal applied stress intensity range, ?Kapp, the nominal maximum stress intensity factor, Kmax, and the effective stress intensity range, ?Keff, are of use, and their experimental measurement are considered. Effects of fiber fracture, stress intensity factor range, mean stress, loading configuration (bending versus tension), test temperature, crack size, crack shape, and fiber-matrix interfacial strength on fatigue crack growth resistance are highlighted. The experimental determination of crack arrest in such composites is outlined.

Book excerpt: An optimization procedure was developed to deduce the fiber bridging stresses from crack opening displacements measured in situ during crack growth. This procedure was used to determine the bridging stress distribution during fatigue crack growth in a unidirectionally reinforced metal matrix composite (SCS-6/TIMETAL®21S). The bridging stress is non-zero at the crack tip contrary to predictions from conventionally used shear lag models. The bridging stress at the crack tip is proportional to the applied far-field stress. The deduced bridging law is similar to the new shear lag models with non-zero bridging stresses at the crack tip. Any bridging model can be used to predict the crack growth behavior by choosing appropriate values of the frictional shear stress (t). Consequently, the magnitude of the stresses in the fibers bridging the crack will depend on the fiber bridging model. Hence, the fiber tensile strength required to predict the onset of fiber failure will also depend on the fiber bridging model.
