They are widespread in North America and create hydrological modifications, such as winter drawdown to control water levels and generate hydropower. In fact, alteration of hydrological regimes is considered one of the major stressors on aquatic biodiversity. Previous research has demonstrated that fish are affected by the alteration of the littoral zone resulting from winter drawdown. These modifications of the littoral habitat tend to impact their shelter habitat, food resource availability and quality of spawning grounds. Winter drawdown has also been shown to be responsible for differences in fish assemblages and abundance of fish species. However, synthetic multi-lake studies of impoundment and drawdown amplitude effects on fish communities are scarce. We used data from 205 impounded and non-impounded lakes in Québec and the Eastern United States to examine the relationship between impoundment and fish community metrics, fish assemblages, and individual fish species. In addition, we also investigated the effects of drawdown amplitude on the same parameters across a subset of 23 lakes. Redundancy analysis was used to test the effects of impoundment and drawdown amplitude on fish assemblages and generalised linear models were performed to investigate the effects of impoundment and drawdown amplitude on fish community metrics and abundance of individual fish species. We found similar fish assemblage between impounded and non-impounded lakes and failed to demonstrate significant impacts of drawdown amplitude on assemblage structure. Finally, we observed higher species richness in impounded lakes and across the drawdown gradient probably because of the positive correlation between fish species richness and lake surface area. " --

Book excerpt: n this study, I examined patterns of long-term changes in the composition of the fish community in the spring-influenced upper San Marcos River (central Texas, USA) and the ecosystem functioning implications of compositional changes in the fish community. Using a long-term historical data set of fish community composition (Perkin et al. 2011; Kollaus et al. 2015; BIO-WEST, Inc. 2013-2016) and contemporary species- specific fish excretion data from the upper San Marcos River, I examined how temporal changes in the composition and diversity of the fish community were related to changes in the rates and ratios of dissolved inorganic N and P recycled by the fish community and how the sequestration of nutrients into fish biomass changed through time. I hypothesized that temporal changes in fish community composition would lead to changes in which species function as the largest contributors to the community-wide aggregate nutrient recycling rates, as well as changes to the community-wide aggregate ratios of excreted nutrients. Accordingly, I also predicted that temporal changes in fish community composition would be associated with changes to which species sequester the largest amount of C, N, and P, and these changes will alter the community-wide aggregate C:N:P.

Book excerpt: Decommissioned aggregate pit and quarry systems generally contain limited structurally complex fish habitat and provide a relatively controlled environment given their small, closed nature. We studied three pit and quarry systems both before and after enhancing structural habitat to address the long-standing debate regarding the role of habitat in aquatic systems: does an increase in physical habitat result in a change to fish abundance, biomass, production or community structure, i.e. the species and their abundance, or is the effect mainly a redistribution of resident fish (the 'attraction-production question')? This study established that the systems had standing stocks of fish biomass at the high end of the natural lake range for similar location, area, and climate, even without the habitat diversity expected in a natural system. The pit and quarry systems also supported, in general, a greater diversity of species than natural aquatic systems of similar size. Fish communities underwent change after habitat addition. There were neutral to positive changes in total fish biomass, but without longer-term monitoring, it could not be confirmed that positive changes would be sustained. There was evidence that the habitat additions changed the distribution of fish within the systems, both in terms of the allocation of biomass among species and in the physical distribution of fishes within the systems. Changes to the fish communities in the habitat addition systems did not seem to be driven by changes to water chemistry, plankton or benthic invertebrate communities. We have demonstrated that these systems, left to develop without structurally complex fish habitat, have become highly productive and functioning aquatic ecosystems. Due to a variety of confounding factors, our confidence in the long-term outcome is low, but it appears that overall habitat additions did not significantly increase system productivity in a sustainable manner.

These water-level fluctuations (WLF) have multiple effects on the organisms above and below the waterline. Natural WLF patterns in lakes guarantee both productivity and biodiversity, while untimely floods and droughts may have negative effects. Human impacts on WLF have led to a stabilization of the water levels of many lakes by hydraulic regulation, untimely drawdown due to water use, or floods due to water release from hydropower plants in the catchments. This book provides a first review in this field. It presents selected papers on the ecological effects of WLF in lakes, resulting from a workshop at the University of Konstanz in winter 2005. Issues addressed here include the extent of WLF, and analyses of their effects on different groups of biota from microorganisms to vertebrates. Applied issues include recommendations for the hydrological management of regulated lakes to reduce negative impacts, and a conceptual framework is delivered by an extension of the floodpulse concept for lakes. Only 253 of the thousands of lakes on this planet have surface areas larger than 500 square kilometers. At first sight, this statistic would seem to indicate that large lakes are relatively unimportant on a global scale; in fact, however, large lakes contain the bulk of the liquid surface freshwater of the earth. Just Lake Baikal and the Laurentian Great Lakes alone contain more than 38% of the world's total liquid freshwater. Thus, the large lakes of the world accentuate an important feature of the earth's freshwater reserves-its extremely irregular distribution. The energy crisis of the 1970s and 1980s made us aware of the fact that we live on a spaceship with finite, that is, exhaustible resources. On the other hand, the energy crisis led to an overemphasis on all the issues concerning energy supply and all the problems connected with producing new energy.
