Book excerpt: The last overview of termites for the non-specialist was published several decades ago and in the intervening years, both knowledge, and the termites themselves have moved on. A 27-year eradication effort for one termite infestation in Devon has shown that UK structures are becoming vulnerable as the climate changes and also that extermination of a colony can be difficult even when there are no other termites waiting to invade. Heritage buildings often present even more problems. Survey work and treatments may be complicated by structural and material complexity overlain with a requirement to retain as much undisturbed and original fabric as possible. There will be concealed cavities not inspected, and inserted barriers, both chemical and physical, will inevitably be incomplete. This study discusses the modifiable environmental parameters that govern termite activity and offers a resume of the baits and chemical treatments that have been developed so that the most appropriate can be selected where necessary. It is primarily intended for those involved in conservation, both in the UK and elsewhere, who commonly have limited resources. It is hoped that it will also be of use to architects, surveyors and others with an interest in Heritage structures.

Book excerpt: In one study described herein, 20 privately owned structures were treated with a 0.05% application of imidacloprid (Premise® 75 WSP) in order to control infestations of subterranean termites. All applications were made at 15 L per 3.05 linear m per 0.30 m of depth. Ten structures were infested with Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) and ten structures were infested with Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki. All structures were inspected through 42 months post-treatment. Only one structure infested with R. flavipes required post-treatment action. Six structures infested with C. formosanus required post-treatment action. In another study, efficacy data were gathered on Premise® Granules when broadcast over an open field and when utilized as a "spot treatment" for control of subterranean termites infesting structures. Open field grids with active R. flavipes were utilized in this study. Grids measuring 8.53 m x 7.32 m were marked off, in-ground commercial termite monitors were installed, and grids were treated with Premise® Granules. Untreated southern yellow pine surface boards were then placed in grids to determine if Premise® Granules would suppress foraging and feeding on surface boards. Premise® Granules did suppress surface feeding of R. flavipes for 9 months post-treatment, although termites were active throughout the study in in-ground commercial termite monitors within treated grids. In a third study, 10 structures built on monolithic slabs, five received a "spot treatment" with Premise® Granules at points of subterranean termite infestation 0.61 m either side of active exterior subterranean termite mud tubes. Structures were inspected through 12 mo post-treatment. Suppression of R. flavipes was sustained for 8 wks in all treatment replications following application of granules, with failures at 8, 12, and 28 weeks post-treatment. A laboratory trial was initiated to simulate field treatments with Premise® 75 WP 0.10 % AI imidacloprid for treatments of structures. The focus of this research was to investigate the dissipation and translocation of imidacloprid in urban environments. Treated sandy loam soil was added to 19-L buckets. Four different plant species commonly found in urban environments were planted in buckets. Results in these trials indicate that imidacloprid was soluble and that there is leaching.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Wood-feeding termites possess symbiotic bacteria that are capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia. This bacterial process is not only central to termite nutrition, but it also has tremendous ecological importance as fixed nitrogen is often a limiting nutrient in terrestrial ecosystems. However, nitrogen fixation is energetically costly, and we therefore hypothesized that a high nitrogen diet would reduce termite dependence on symbiotic nitrogen fixation. This was tested by rearing workers of the eastern subterranean termite (Reticulitermes flavipes) on three food substrates--pine wood, pine needles, and aspen leaves--that differed significantly in percent nitrogen (0.07, 0.36, and 0.93% nitrogen, respectively). Termite and representative food samples were analyzed using an isotope ratio mass spectrometer. A mixed model equation was applied to determine the percent nitrogen derived from the atmosphere within each termite sample. Initial results indicated that nitrogen fixation rates are plastic within R. flavipes and they are negatively correlated with dietary nitrogen, as hypothesized. A follow-up study was conducted to investigate three assumptions associated with the initial experiment. The first assumption is that only nitrogen concentration, and not the nitrogen source (i.e. amino acids, urea, etc.), affects nitrogen fixation rates. This assumption is problematic as previous studies suggest that nitrogen fixation in R. flavipes is differentially affected by ammonium nitrate and urea. This is consistent with the observation that ammonium inhibits transcription of the nitrogenase enzyme that is responsible for nitrogen fixation. Second, because the isotope discrimination factor occurring as a result of digestion, [Delta]dig, is not known for R. flavipes, it was estimated by assuming that termites reared on the aspen leaf diet (highest percent nitrogen) did not fix any atmospheric nitrogen. Our estimates of [Delta]dig ranged from 4.1 to 6.9, which are slightly higher than those reported in the literature for other termite species (~3.4 to 5.8). Third, as the isotope discrimination factor occurring as the result of nitrogen fixation, [Delta]fix, was never calculated for any termite species, [Delta]fix was assumed to be within the range of nodulating plants ( -2 to 0). The second set of experiments addressed these issues by inhibiting nitrogen fixation in groups R. flavipes workers via force feeding the antibiotic kanamicin. Both antibiotic-treated and control (nitrogen-fixing) termites were then exposed to different concentrations of either urea or ammonium nitrate. By comparing the difference between the [delta]15N signatures of antibiotic-treated termites and their food sources, we calculated that [Delta]dig = 2.264. Similarly, by comparing the [delta]15N signatures of antibiotic-treated termites with control termites, we determined that [Delta]fix was equal to -1.125. Using these calculated values for [Delta]dig and [Delta]fix, a strong negative correlation between dietary nitrogen and symbiotic nitrogen fixation was evident for termites reared on urea and ammonium nitrate. These studies represent the first attempt to employ stable isotopes to study nitrogen fixation in R. flavipes and therefore significantly extend what is known about symbiotic nitrogen fixation and the role that this termite plays in nutrient cycling.

At 303,209 ppm DOT, ingestion was reduced by ~84%. Despite reduction in consumption of filter paper, DOT consumption increased with higher concentration of treatment. DOT did not deter feeding of the treated filter paper. When mortality of termites was observed at 192 h, greater mortality had occurred in treatments at the highest concentration of DOT (81.3% for 303,209 ppm DOT). Termites were ingesting greater quantities of DOT with higher concentration of treatment. High mortality was caused by ingestion of lethal doses of DOT. My study determined that DOT kills termites rapidly by ingestion, consequently limiting damage to wood in the structure. DOT/glycol treatments were not found to be deterrents of feeding except at the highest concentrations. As a result, untreated wood in the structure can be protected because treated wood would be a more convenient food source and the treatment would probably not cause feeding deterrence.

Book excerpt: Since the advent of man, a struggle has been in progress between him and insects but with very little success with regard to the control of insects. Only in recent years, a conscious and deliberate attempt has been made to bring together all control measures into a harmonious and more satisfactory programme as an integrated control measure due to the problems arisen as a result of widespread indiscriminate use of synthetic organic insecticides. Progressively, less use of cultural and other practices and greater dependence on chemical compounds have produced, in many cases, a mono-system pest control. The term 'chitin synthesis inhibitor' has been given to a new class of bio-rational compounds through greater selectivity of action. These compounds appear to fit the requirement of fourth-generation pesticides, such as the absence of undesirable effects on man, wildlife and the environment and compatibility with modern principle of insect-pest management. The present investigation hence includes a study on the efficacy of three chitin synthesis inhibitor compounds-Penfluron, Diflubenzuron and Furyltriazine-on Tribolium castaneum and Heliothis armigera and on the mode of action based on histopathological studies on peritrophic membrane and testis of Heliothis armigera treated with these compounds to check the F1 generation of pest population.

Book excerpt: Polyphagous pests are primarily agricultural pests that feed on economically important agricultural and horticultural crops of wide taxonomic diversity across the globe. They cause immense damage across different crop varieties owing to their generalist and voracious food habits. The advent of mono-crop culture in a huge area and the massive use of pesticides post green revolution have massively increased pest outbreaks all over the world. The Middle Eastern countries, African continent and even the Indian subcontinent is increasingly facing resurgences of polyphagus pests. This book compiles an inclusive account of polyphagous pests. It covers locusts, termites, aphids, whiteflies, mealybugs, scale insects, gram pod borer, fall armyworm, thrips, mites and rodents. The book discusses mode of spread, enormity of losses caused, mechanism of action, and also means to reduce the crop losses. It brings together a unique perspective for researchers to learn effective pest management practices across all crops. This book is a reference guide to researchers and also useful for academicians and students of entomology.

Book excerpt: Biology of Termites, a Modern Synthesis brings together the major advances in termite biology, phylogenetics, social evolution and biogeography. In this new volume, David Bignell, Yves Roisin and Nathan Lo have brought together leading experts on termite taxonomy, behaviour, genetics, caste differentiation, physiology, microbiology, mound architecture, biogeography and control. Very strong evolutionary and developmental themes run through the individual chapters, fed by new data streams from molecular sequencing, and for the first time it is possible to compare the social organisation of termites with that of the social Hymenoptera, focusing on caste determination, population genetics, cooperative behaviour, nest hygiene and symbioses with microorganisms. New chapters have been added on termite pheromones, termites as pests of agriculture and on destructive invasive species.
