Book excerpt: There has been a limited amount of research on the use of experiential education with music therapy students. Most of the research conducted has focused on the experiences of graduate level students. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to understand the potential effect of experiential music therapy education on undergraduate and graduate equivalency students' reported empathy and self-esteem. Five undergraduate and five graduate equivalency students were enrolled in a music therapy course in which they were asked to role-play the therapist and the client in mock music therapy sessions. Undergraduate participants completed the Davis Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) and the Janis-Field Feelings of Inadequacy Scale (Janis-Field) as pre and posttest measures. Undergraduates also provided responses to elicited journal questions and participated in a semi-structured telephone interview. Graduate participants completed the IRI and the Janis-Field as a posttest measure after the completion of the semester, provided responses to elicited journal questions, and participated in a semi-structured telephone interview. There were no significant changes from pretest to posttest for undergraduate students and no significant relationships between the posttest scores of undergraduate and graduate participants. Qualitative data analysis for undergraduate and graduate students indicated that participants were able to identify changes in their own empathy and self-esteem as a result of the role-playing experiences. Implications for further research are discussed.

One separate person gains access to the emotional world of another. An entire worldview holds up this idea. It is individualistic and affirms the possibility of access to other people’s “inner world.” Can we really see inside another, though? And are we discrete, separate selves? How can we best grapple with these questions in the field of music therapy? In response, this book offers four empathy pathways. Two are situated in a constituent approach (that prioritises discrete individuals who then enter into relationships with one another) and two are located in relational approaches (that acknowledge the foundational reality of relationships themselves). Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of a volunteer music therapy program on the self-esteem and locus of control of children survivors of domestic violence residing in a shelter for domestic violence. An experimental group which received music therapy and a no-contact control group were used in this study. The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory Scale was used to measure the subjects' selfesteem while the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control scale was used to measure the subjects' locus of control in both groups. These tests were administered before and after treatment for the experimental group. The control group was pre-tested during their first week in the shelter, and post-tested during their last week. No significant difference between groups was found for the subjects' self esteem while significant differences were found between groups for the subjects' locus of control. It appeared that some individual subjects in the experimental group benefited from their involvement in the music therapy sessions.

The reviewed evidence included study designs such as uncontrolled pilot studies, case studies, small-scale cross-sectional surveys, nationally representative longitudinal cohort studies, community-wide ethnographies and randomized controlled trials from diverse disciplines. The beneficial impact of the arts could be furthered through acknowledging and acting on the growing evidence base; promoting arts engagement at the individual, local and national levels; and supporting cross-sectoral collaboration.

Book excerpt: This multiparadigm inquiry sought to investigate music therapy group processes aimed at facilitating empathic interactions between adolescents referred for aggression in a relatively under-resourced school in Eersterust, South Africa. Two qualitative studies were conducted under the umbrella of this multiparadigm research. The first employed Husserlian phenomenology and the second was informed by the theories of Deleuze and Gergen. In the two studies music therapy practice differed in relation to how the adolescent participants were produced and the therapeutic techniques that were used. Theoretically, notions of aggression and empathy differed between the two paradigms and this held varying implications for practice. The research process within the two studies differed in that, while in the descriptive phenomenological study an experiential essence could be pursued, the study informed by the thinking of Deleuze and Gergen afforded relational rhizomic expansion of meaning. Music was also foregrounded and receded in varying ways within the two studies. The implications for music therapy practice that were highlighted by the phenomenological study were the value of bracketing; the usefulness of a client-centred approach that balances structure and freedom; and the importance of considering empathy in multifaceted ways. In the study informed by the theories of Deleuze and Gergen, the usefulness of aggression within a non-judgemental approach to music therapy that concurrently seeks to enhance collective well-being was highlighted. Other implications for music therapy practice that were emphasised through this second study were the value of a more inclusive concept of empathy in music therapy; the value of “small bends”; and the importance of considering assemblages that can inform the planning of therapeutic processes and possibilities for participants’ growth. Through deep immersion in each paradigm, diverse representations could be offered and a richer understanding of the topic under consideration could be generated. The research aimed to explore the role of paradigmatic orientation, particularly regarding the relationships between practice, theory and research. By “plugging” group music therapy processes into two different paradigms, varying approaches to thinking could become possible. The creative potential for interplay between the two paradigms was explored.
