Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A total of four experiments utilizing 462 weaned pigs were conducted to evaluate the use of spray-dried plasma (SDP) in early nursery diets. In the first experiment, it was determined that in diets that contained 6.75% SDP, soy protein concentrate can replace dried skim milk and dried whey provided that there is adequate lactose in the diet. In the second experiment, it was determined that a lower level of lactose (15%) was needed to maximize pig performance in a diet that contained 6.75% SDP compared to a diet that contained no SDP (30 to 45% lactose needed). The third study was conducted to evaluate if it is feed intake or a metabolic mechanism by which SDP improves nursery performance. The results of this study demonstrated that if feed intake of the diet without SDP was improved to equal the feed intake level of pigs fed the diet with SDP, growth performance was similar. Thus, SDP improves postweaning performance by improving feed intake. Additionally, it was determined that the inclusion of SDP in the diet improved intestinal health as indicated by an increased villous height and villous height to crypt depth ratio. Given that the response to SDP is greater in a conventional on-site environment that does not minimize antigen exposure, the objective of the final study was to determine if pigs fed SDP would be able to respond better to an immunological challenge using lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The results of this study demonstrated that pigs fed the diet with SDP responded much more adversely to a LPS challenge, as measured by an increase in serum adrenocorticotropin-releasing hormone and cortisol. The results of these studies suggest that SDP is able to reduce the stimulation of the immune system, thus resulting in an improvement in feed intake and growth. The exact mechanism by which this occurs is still unknown and needs to be studied further.
