Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume promotes engineering psychophysiology as a discipline and demonstrates its value to a new audience who we hope will consist of ergonomists, human factors psychologists, and engineers. The editors use a broad definition of what constitutes engineering, including all aspects of the fields known as human engineering, industrial engineering, and safety and systems engineering. The two goals for the volume are reflected in the subtitle. The Issues section introduces the components critical for the successful application of psychophysiological methods to problems in engineering. The chapters are intended to provide an introduction for the reader who is unfamiliar with psychophysiology and to provide the newcomer to the discipline with an overview of the basic theoretical, measurement, instrumentation, and experimental design questions inherent in the use of psychophysiological methods. The Applications section illustrates the many ways that psychophysiological methods are already being used in engineering applications. A broad definition of application is used to include laboratory and simulation research, as well as field studies, and all of the chapters address questions that are relevant for applying psychophysiological methods in the field. The editor's intent is to stimulate investigators to use these methods in new problem areas; therefore, the content of the chapters varies widely, from reviewing specific psychophysiological measures to reviewing work performed on specific engineering problems.

Book excerpt: This report from the Committee on Military Nutrition Research reviews the history of caffeine usage, the metabolism of caffeine, and its physiological effects. The effects of caffeine on physical performance, cognitive function and alertness, and alleviation of sleep deprivation impairments are discussed in light of recent scientific literature. The impact of caffeine consumption on various aspects of health, including cardiovascular disease, reproduction, bone mineral density, and fluid homeostasis are reviewed. The behavioral effects of caffeine are also discussed, including the effect of caffeine on reaction to stress, withdrawal effects, and detrimental effects of high intakes. The amounts of caffeine found to enhance vigilance and reaction time consistently are reviewed and recommendations are made with respect to amounts of caffeine appropriate for maintaining alertness of military personnel during field operations. Recommendations are also provided on the need for appropriate labeling of caffeine-containing supplements, and education of military personnel on the use of these supplements. A brief review of some alternatives to caffeine is also provided.

Book excerpt: Given its characteristics and the complexity of its use and its environment, the helicopter is exposed to damage and a whole series of measures can be previewed to alientate this risk. The presentations concentrated on five main topics: 1. Crew training; 2. The different conditions of use; 3. The psycho-physiological component; 4. Survival equipment and methods; and 5. Accidents and their prevention. A careful reading of the papers presented at the symposium will enable both specialists and decision-makers to make a summary assessment of the constraints of the missions on the one hand, and on the other, of the new methods of protection and training and the new technologies which will enable aircrew to carry out their missions in a safer environment. In addition, they will perhaps discover that helicopter operation can be optimised by a series of different devices and above all by judicious matching of "type of helicopter-type of aircrew training-type of additional on-board equipment".

Book excerpt: Discussions on cognitive-neuroenhancement for healthy adults tend to focus on theoretical positions while concrete policy proposals and detailed models are scarce. Furthermore, discussions generally rely solely on data from the US or UK, while international perspectives are mostly non-existent. This volume fills the gap addressing the conceptual, ethical, social, and legal implications of cognitive enhancement from an international perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking Precautions Against Fatigue in Aviation Pilot fatigue is a significant problem in modern aviation operations, largely because of the unpredictable work hours, long duty periods, circadian disruptions, and insufficient sleep that are commonplace in both civilian and military flight operations. The full impact of fatigue is often underappreciated, but many of its deleterious effects have long been known. Compared to people who are well-rested, people who are sleep deprived think and move more slowly, make more mistakes and have memory difficulties. These negative effects may and do lead to aviation errors and accidents. In the 1930s, flight time limitations suggested lay-over durations, and aircrew sleep recommendations were developed in an attempt to mitigate aircrew fatigue. Unfortunately, there have been few changes to aircrew scheduling provisions and flight time limitations since the time they were first introduced, despite evidence that updates are needed. Although the scientific understanding of fatigue, sleep, shift work, and circadian physiology has advanced significantly over the past several decades, current regulations and industry practices have in large part failed to adequately incorporate the new knowledge.

This book was released on 1998-10-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation was to establish the efficacy of Dexedrine for sustaining aviator performance despite 64-hours of extended wakefulness. Although earlier flight studies yielded favorable results with no significant side effects, they were restricted to sleep-deprivation periods of only 40 hours. Due to requirements for longer periods of sustained wakefulness, it was necessary to study the efficacy of Dexedrine for maintaining aviator performance during 3 days and 2 nights without sleep. To accomplish this, computerized evaluations of aviator flight skills were conducted at regular intervals as subjects completed standardized flights in a UH-60 helicopter simulator, both: under Dexedrine and placebo. Laboratory-based assessments of cognitive, psychological, and central nervous system status were completed as well. Dexedrine (10 mg.) was given prophylactically (prior to signs of fatigue) at midnight, 0400, and 0800 on both deprivation days in one cycle, and placebo was given on both days in the other. Results indicated simulator flight performance was maintained by Dexedrine for up to 58 hours, while performance under placebo rapidly deteriorated. The drug was most beneficial
