The development of the training and evaluation systems and the results of the US Army Aviation Center (USAAVNC) sponsored crew coordination validation testbed conducted by air assault battalion crews are in companion reports delivered to USARIARDA (Pawlik et al., 1993; Grubb et al., 1993; and Simon et al., 1993). The following report describes the most recent phase of this research, orchestrated by the USARIARDA and USAAVNC and technically supported by DRC. This report focuses on the results of providing attack helicopter battalion crews with crew coordination training in preparation for follow-on research to assess the interaction of battle rostering and crew coordination training.

Book excerpt: This report documents the development of candidate methods and materials for measuring and evaluating crew coordination in the Army's Aircrew Coordination Training Program. The methods are designed for use in evaluating aircrews in all Army aircraft or simulators. The evaluation methods rely on video recording of crew interactions in a simulator or aircraft. The report includes lessons learned from the validation testbed and describes how the evaluation methods and materials were improved to produce a treed exportable evaluation package. The suggested process for evaluating crew coordination is designed to assist the Army to implement the new Aircrew Training Manuals. The primary evaluation measure Is the ACE Checklist, which consists of a set of 13 crew coordination behaviors or Basic Qualities. Mission performance measures were developed to assess the operational effect of crew coordination on flight safety and mission effectiveness. The report provides materials and suggested applications and improvements that can be used to evaluate initial, refresher, and continuation aircrew coordination training conducted in resident courses or by units in the field. Evaluation materials include grade slips, behavioral measures, evaluator worksheets, and suggested mission performance measures, which are all packaged separately in a companion report, Crew Coordination Exportable Evaluation Package for Army Aviation.

Book excerpt: This research was designed to develop measures of aircrew coordination and mission effectiveness and to identify crew coordination training requirements for U.S. Army rotary-wing flight. Twenty crews planned and conducted a three-segment mission scenario in the UH-60 Flight Simulator that exposed crews to situations requiring coordination. Crew performance and communications were recorded during the final two scenario segments and three mission effectiveness measures were developed from the records: navigational accuracy, threat avoidance and evasion, and instrument approach. Communication rate, topics, functions, and content areas were analyzed as indexes of crew coordination. The results indicate that substantial differences in performance and communication profiles exist between crewmembers and across mission segments. There were significant relationships between crew coordination levels and performance on the three mission tasks. The results also indicate the need for aircrew coordination training for Army helicopter pilots. Five recommendations are made for an Army aircrew coordination training program.

Book excerpt: This report describes the development of a reliable, objective, and quantitative set of metrics for measuring and assessing aircrew coordination in terms of aviator performance and safety. Based on a review of programs to evaluate aircrew coordination in the commercial and military sectors, three rating instruments were developed for specific application to UH-60 helicopter aircrews. These instruments included a military adaptation of the Cockpit Management Attitudes Questionnaire (CMAQ), the Aircrew Coordination Evaluation Checklist, and a revised set of Aircrew Training Manual (ATM) maneuver standards. All three instruments were used by the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) to evaluate UH-60 aircrews in May 1990 at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Data from this experiment are being analyzed by ARI and will provide a basis for developing training standards and methods in this area. This report documents the analysis of performance on the Walter Reed Performance Assessment Battery (WRPAB), and the development of an initial model for the WRPAB using Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) techniques. The WRPAB was used in a study where 20 AH-1 pilots (1) predicted the effects of various symptom complexes on their performance, (2) went through a 36-hour protocol to induce symptoms similar to symptoms that follow exposure to intermediate doses of radiation, (3) performed a simulated AH-1 mission before and after symptom induction, and (4) were administered the WRPAB approximately every 2 hours throughout the 36-hour protocol. MicroSAINT models for AH-1 tank engagements were developed that used PAB performance to predict AH-1 performance degradation. The results indicate that the WRPAB (or some other test battery) has utility for the prediction of operator performance as affected by stressors such as ionizing radiation.

Book excerpt: This document provides the results of exploratory research to demonstrate the feasibility of conducting crew coordination training in the OH-58 aircraft, using the Army's Aircrew Coordination Exportable Training Course. The hands-on portion of the course, usually conducted in visual flight simulators, was conducted instead in OH-58 aircraft. Observation pilots and aerial observers from an attack helicopter battalion received the academic portion of the course in conjunction with attack crews from the unit. Two OH-58 instructor pilots (IP), a unit trainer (UT), and four aircrews were selected to conduct the hands-on portion of the course in the OH-58 aircraft. The IPs and UT trained and evaluated the four aircrews during three missions flown in the aircraft. Audio recordings of each flight, gradeslips and evaluator worksheets modified for OH-58 crews, and participant exit interviews were used to collect data. The demonstration showed that it is practicable to conduct the hands-on portion of the course in the OH-58 aircraft but did not assess the effectiveness of the training. Recommendations concerning the best type of audio recorder, number of evaluation and training flights, and use of the 2B24 non-visual Flight Simulator are provided.

Night operations under low ceilings, reduced visibility, high or low speeds, nap-of-the-earth flight profiles and a threat of sophisticated antiaircraft weaponry is defined as the 'worst-credible-environment' for the NATO theater. In this environment, the attack helicopter and its crew will be expected to fly a large percentage of its missions and deliver its ordnance with a high degree of accuracy. Task performance is outlined in a detailed matrix. Collective tasks are grouped into functional task clusters. The effects of climatic conditions, the hostile threat, social and civil factors upon performance of these task clusters are discussed. The effects of the machine/mission created environment are presented and include hypoxia, toxic products, temperature extremes, visual and optical problems, acoutics, vibration, and human factors.
