Book excerpt: According to Horta, Bahl, MartineÌ1s, and others (2007), breastfeeding displays the short-term significance for child health, which mostly includes protection against morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases. The research suggests that breastfeeding mothers should be provided with complete guidelines and information on the benefits of breastfeeding a baby. This will encourage the mothers to breastfeed their babies to avoid future infections such obesity, high blood pressure, and body cholesterol. Martin, Ben Shlomo, Gunnell, Elwood, Yarnell, Davey (2005) performed research to examine the relation of having been breastfed with cardiovascular disease risk factors, mortality, and incidence. Contrastingly, only 36% of newborn babies are exclusively breastfed (Sguassero, 2008). The matter becomes worse in developing and poor countries where children face poor feeding practices and patterns. For example, many mothers fail to exclusively breastfeed (EBF) for the first six months (which nurses recommend) and failure to breastfeed their babies within the first hours of life. This issue causes death to 800,000 children of less than five years per year (UNICEF, 2014). The study seeks to increase the rate of breastfeeding by utilizing theory of planned behavior (TPB). Thereafter, cross-section survey will be conducted in two phases that include 1 month and six months. Three hundred and eighty-four randomly selected mothers of reproductive age will take part in the study. The findings will be disseminated through media, press release, local events, and community meetings.

October 2010 marked the 10th anniversary of the release of the HHS Blueprint for Action on Breastfeeding, in which former Surgeon General David Satcher, M.D., Ph. All too often, mothers who wish to breastfeed encounter daunting challenges in moving through the health care system. Furthermore, there is often an incompatibility between employment and breastfeeding, but with help this is not impossible to overcome. Even so, because the barriers can seem insurmountable at times, many mothers stop breastfeeding. In addition, families are often unable to find the support they need in their communities to make breastfeeding work for them. From a societal perspective, many research questions related to breastfeeding remain unanswered, and for too long, breastfeeding has received insufficient national attention as a public health issue. This Call to Action describes in detail how different people and organizations can contribute to the health of mothers and their children. The sample for this study of the U.S. population was selected from households in 81 counties across the United States. About 40,000 persons 2 months of age and over were selected, including large samples of both young and old persons. About 12,000 of the sample persons were black Americans, 12,000 were Mexican-Americans, and the remaining 16,000 were of all other race and ethnicity groups. All selected persons were asked to complete an extensive interview and an examination in a large mobile examination center. The survey period is 1988-94, consisting of two phases of equal length and sample size. Both Phase 1 and Phase 2 were random samples of the U.S. population living in households.
