Book excerpt: Anthropogenic stream alterations are caused by various factors, such as dams and water diversions that often change the flow, temperature and turbidity regimes of the aquatic ecosystems they occur in. Altered, unfavorable stream conditions are known to affect fishes at multiple levels of biological organization. These effects range from primary (e.g., blood cortisol concentrations) to secondary (e.g., serum chemistry) to tertiary levels (e.g., growth and condition) and can be manifested at any and all biological levels. Knowledge of fish responses to altered stream conditions at these levels of organization provides insight into population-level effects of anthropogenic alterations on brown trout Salmo trutta, which can be used to inform management decisions and mitigation actions. The response of brown trout to altered temperature, turbidity and flow regimes in upper Esopus Creek, New York were evaluated at multiple biological levels during summers 2010 and 2011. Secondary and tertiary-level effects were compared between trout in a stream segment receiving cold, turbid water releases from an aqueduct originating in a nearby reservoir and trout in a stream segment above the confluence of the aqueduct (i.e., unaffected by releases from the aqueduct). A fish health assessment was conducted to evaluate secondary and tertiary-level responses in summer 2010, and radio-telemetry, capture-recapture and intensive habitat surveys were used to evaluate additional tertiary-level responses in summer 2011. Results from summers 2010 and 2011 indicated that trout in all reaches of upper Esopus Creek were stressed at the secondary (i.e., serum chemistry) and tertiary-level (i.e., body condition, growth rates and movement rates), and that trout immediately downstream from the aqueduct were less stressed. In addition, summer 2011 habitat data indicated that greater amounts of habitat that was optimal for adult trout existed downstream from the aqueduct, and adults preferred these types of habitats. Stream conditions upstream from the aqueduct were warm and low-flow (i.e., stressful for trout), and the water was clear and not turbid during both summers. Conversely stream conditions immediately downstream from the aqueduct were turbid (i.e., stressful for trout), fastflowing and cold. Therefore, stream conditions throughout upper Esopus Creek during both summers were stressful for trout to some extent, and this was reflected in serum chemistry, body condition, movement and growth. Stream temperature is a dominant factor affecting fish growth and performance, which may explain why trout immediately downstream from the aqueduct were less stressed. Results from the present study have local and broad implications. They could be used locally to inform future management decisions of the water and fishery resources of upper Esopus Creek, as well as to educate the various stakeholder groups of the stream and its resources. They could be used broadly to inform management decisions and mitigation actions to benefit fishery resources in other aquatic ecosystems affected by humans (e.g., tailwater trout fisheries).

The species live in small streams as well as large rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal seas and oceans, with brown trout better adapted to small streams and less well adapted to feeding in the ocean than Atlantic salmon. Smolt and adult sizes and longevity are constrained by habitat conditions of populations spawning in small streams. Feeding, wintering and spawning opportunities influence migratory versus resident lifestyles, while the growth rate influences egg size and number, age at maturity, reproductive success and longevity. Further, early experiences influence later performance. For instance, juvenile behaviour influences adult homing, competition for spawning habitat, partner finding and predator avoidance. The abundance of wild Atlantic salmon populations has declined in recent years; climate change and escaped farmed salmon are major threats. The climate influences through changes in temperature and flow, while escaped farmed salmon do so through ecological competition, interbreeding and the spreading of contagious diseases. The authors pinpoint essential problems and offer suggestions as to how they can be reduced. In this context, population enhancement, habitat restoration and management are also discussed. The text closes with a presentation of what the authors view as major scientific challenges in ecological research on these species.

Book excerpt: The combined impacts of urbanization and winter conditions on stream ecosystems and their fish communities is an important area of study that has previously been unaddressed. Urbanized streams commonly exhibit low fish richness and are susceptible to species and diversity loss. Additionally, winter is a period of increased mortality for stream fishes due to physiological and environmental changes. To increase winter survival, fish need sufficient energy reserves, access to good winter habitat, and a decreased likelihood for high risk activities. This study assessed the interactive effects of urbanization and wintertime on brook and brown trout condition and movement. Over the course of two winters, two urban and two rural streams in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan were compared for fish condition and movement using electrofishing and telemetry. Significantly higher mean fish condition was seen in the urban streams for both brook and brown trout, in several size classes, during both winters. Higher mean fish condition was also seen during winter 2 for both brook and brown trout, in most size classes. Mean percentage of recaptured fish that showed movement was not significantly different between the urban and rural streams or between winters. This study suggests stream temperature, water velocity, and fragmentation may explain higher fish condition in urban streams.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Stream organisms have a complex relationship with the habitats they occupy, and their relationships can vary greatly across spatial, temporal, or taxonomic scales. Anthropogenic modification of ecosystems generally causes alteration to the temporal regime of natural variation and disturbance. The effects of timber harvesting on stream systems have been studied extensively in the Pacific Northwest and Northeast of the United States, and indicate long-term deleterious effects. These disturbances resulted in increase in sediment, discharge, temperature, and decrease in dissolved oxygen levels. Although stream ecosystems are a product of historic geologic and climatologic attributes, large-scale human disturbances can change the landscape. Over the past 200 years the forestlands of the southeastern Gulf Coastal Plain ecoregion of the United States has experienced extensive pressure primarily from timber harvesting. In spite of the known deleterious effects of timber harvesting on lotic systems, this region has not received much attention. In this study, macroinvertebrates and fish were used to quantify the effects of timber harvesting, and its major byproduct, road crossing, in headwater streams in westcentral Louisiana. The comparative study of macroinvertebrate assemblages during the pre-, during-, and post- timber harvest years did not show any significant difference. Neither was there a significant different in macroinvertebrate assemblage between the reference stream and streams with varying levels of timber harvest activities. Although no significant difference was detected in macroinvertebrate taxa at the annual scale, a significant seasonal difference was detected. Similarly, scaling down from stream level to mesohabitat level, significant difference was detected at smaller scale. This is suggestive of assemblages responding to smaller temporal and spatial scales structured to the biogeographic history. The effects of road crossings on fish movement were significant when compared to natural reaches of the streams in Fort Polk, Louisiana. Movement through various bridge designs did not indicate a difference, which was a result of lower recaptures. An inverse relationship was detected between water depth and fish movement. Lack of significant relationship of movement with current velocity is a result of greater variation in the stream hydrologic conditions in the headwater reaches.

Resource managers and practitioners spend considerable time and money implementing stream habitat projects. Installation of artificial habitat structures is a consistently popular approach. In this thesis I describe effects of artificial structures on stream morphology and fish density and highlight management implications. In the first chapter, I address the effects of habitat structures on stream morphology in a low-power system. Formal evaluations of the effects of habitat structures on stream morphology in low-power systems like the North Branch of the Au Sable River have been very limited relative to the popularity of these projects. I demonstrate that while artificial structures produce some desired habitat characteristics, their effects tend to be localized and may be outweighed by deposition. In the second chapter, I evaluate the relationship between the density of Brown Trout (Salmo trutta) and Brook Trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) relative to the density of artificial structures. While there are significant relationships for both species, responses are highly variable, and differ by species and size in relation to structure type. I also show the influence of stream context on relationships between fish and artificial structures.
