Book excerpt: In the most recent decade, there has been a spiraling national trend of academic underachievement on the part of African American male adolescents. The empirical purpose of this study was to investigate what role, if any, systemic racism may be playing in the growing epidemic of academic underachievement in African American male adolescents. The results of the analyses utilized in this study found that there were significant correlations between perceptions of racism, coping behavior utilization, and psychological dysfunction. Specifically, canonical correlation analysis found that elevated levels of Cultural Mistrust, Cultural Race Related Stress, and Individual Race Related Stress leads to increased use of Emotion Based Coping behaviors and decreased implementation of Avoidant Focused and Task Related Coping behaviors. Furthermore, canonical correlation analysis also found that Emotion Based Coping and Cultural Mistrust were both associated with higher levels of Psychological Dysfunction (Anxiety and Depression). Finally, hierarchical regression analysis found that participant levels of Cultural Mistrust are related to Academic Achievement. In contrast, Psychological Dysfunction was not found to be significantly related to Academic Achievement. The findings of this research ultimately suggest that African American male perceptions of systemic racism indeed correlate with academic achievement. The results of this study provide empirical evidence which warrants an intentional effort on the part of educators, therapists, and social scientists to purposefully construct contextualized models and culturally appropriate strategies that will psychologically empower African American male adolescents and reverse this population's trend of academic underachievement. Implications for educators, therapists, and social scientists are presented in this paper.

These widely used statistics state that compared to their White and African American female counterparts, African American male students underperform in nearly all educational measures (i.e. GPA, standardized test scores, graduation and dropout rates, etc.). The majority of the research on this academic achievement gap has focused on deepening our understanding of the barriers to educating African American males. While understanding the problem is a logical first step to resolving any dilemma, research on this topic has done very little to guide educators, politicians, and others concerned towards improving the educational experiences of these students. Current research found that some researchers attribute this problem to deficits within the students, others to systemic problems in America's schools, and others to the effect of poverty. Thus, the interplay of personal, cultural, social, and political factors involved in educating Black males are far too complex for policymakers to formulate an education policy likely to satisfy the needs of the numerous school districts across our nation. Yet, despite these limitations, culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) is proved to be one of the most effective strategies for improving the academic performance of African American male effective strategies for improving the academic performance of African American male students The purpose of this paper is to conduct an ethnographic systematic review of the literature on the use of culturally responsive pedagogy and the perceptions of African American male students about their educational experiences. It is an attempt to gauge whether or not this intervention has the ability to assuage the issues and concerns voiced by African American male students in the public education system. Implications for policy formation will be discussed.

Indeed, many studies have found that healthy masculine identity development is associated with a number of positive outcomes for males in general, including Black males. In school counseling literature, however, this discussion has been relatively absent—particularly regarding those students living in urban contexts. Indeed, research devoted to the study of Black males in the school counseling literature focuses almost exclusively on race and issues associated with its social construction with only cursory, if any, attention given to their masculine identity development as a function of living in urban communities and attending urban schools. Based on this lack of information, it is probably a safe assumption that intentional, systematic, culturally relevant efforts to assist Black males in developing healthy achievement and masculine identities based on their unique personal, social, academic experiences and future career goals are not being applied by school counselors concerned with meeting students’ needs. School counselors are in a unique position, nonetheless, to lend their considerable expertise—insights, training and skills—to improving life outcomes among Black males—a population who are consistently in positions of risk according to a number of quality of life indicators. Without knowledge and awareness of Black males’ masculine identity development in urban areas, coupled with the requisite skills to influence the myriad factors that enhance and impede healthy development in such environments, they are missing out on tremendous opportunities which other professions appear to understand and, quite frankly, seem to take more seriously. As such, this book proposes to accomplish two specific goals: 1. Highlight the plight of Black males with specific emphasis on the ecological components of their lives in relation to current school culture and trends. 2. Encourage school counselors to give more thought to Black male identity development that takes into consideration differential experiences in society as a whole, and schools in particular, as a function of the intersection of their race, as well as their gender. The first rationale for this book, then, is to highlight the plight of Black males with specific emphasis on the ecological components of their lives in relation to current school culture and trends (e.g., standards?based accountability practices) in urban environments. However, I recognize the role of school counselors has never been fully integrated into educational reform programs. As such, their positions are often unregulated and determined by people in positions of power who do not understand their training, job?specific standards and, thus, potential impact on the lives of Black male students. As a result, their vast potential to develop strong interventions designed to address the myriad racial and masculine factors that serve to enhance and impede Black males’ academic achievement is often unrealized. Therefore, the second reason for this special issue is to include the scholarship of professional school counselors and counselor educators with policy change in mind. Scholars will be invited to contribute manuscripts that explore race, masculinity and academic achievement in relation to the role of school counselors. This is designed to encourage school counselors and counselor educators to give more thought to Black male identity development that takes into consideration differential experiences in society as a whole, and schools in particular, as a function of the intersection of their race, as well as their gender.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Using Critical Race Theory (Crenshaw, Gotanda, Peller, & Thomas, 1995; Ladson-Billing, 1998; Richard Delgado & Jean Stefanic, 2000; Solorzano & Yasso, 2002) as a theoretical framework, and critical narrative inquiry (Clendanin & Connelly, 1999) as research methodology, I explored stories from five eighth grade African American adolescent males in order to identify how home, community, and school experiences contributed to their academic success and social development. My passion for the inquiry was driven for my desire to foster a sense of agency for social justice and positive changes for the African American community. Selection of participants was based upon reading and math scores in the 60th percentile range on the Georgia Criterion Reference Competency Test (CRCT). Social development was based upon the number of discipline reports. Data collection methods included individual and focus interviews. Important qualities of classroom teachers were determined by a ranking of qualities of effective teachers. The literature review included an examination of the educational history of African Americans, adolescents and racial identity, experiences of African American males, and culturally relevant pedagogy. Six findings resulted from this study. (1) A value system, work ethic, and selfdiscipline are noted for students who are academically and socially developed. (2) Parental involvement is directly linked to positive academic outcomes. (3) A positive sense of ethnic/racial identity serves as a cultural motivator. (4) A connection to the community is limited or absent based on participation in community activities. (5) Some African American males are participating in their own educational marginalization by failing to recognize the significance of culturally relevant teaching. (6) An ethic of care and justice demonstrated by school personnel is significant to students. The study will inform policymakers that it is of great importance for them to reconsider policies, such as zero tolerance, which disproportionately affect minority males. There is a demand for administrators to understand that they are the key in encouraging and supporting staff to acknowledge students experiences and to incorporate experiences into culturally relevant teaching. The study informs parents of the importance to prepare their children to live in a society of discrimination, prejudice, and racism.

This study also examines the moderating effects of family factors on the associations between negative school climate and internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Using a sample of 318 middle school African American boys from a larger study (N = 21,109), students reported on their perceptions of their school environments. Findings revealed that negative school climate perceptions were positively related to both internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Negative school climate factors were associated negatively with students' grades; however, the relationship was mediate through internalizing and externalizing behaviors. Findings also indicated that family processes may moderate the relationship between negative school climate and adolescent outcomes. Results suggest that school environments may have adverse effects on African American males' developmental outcomes.
