Book excerpt: The deterioration of concrete in structure is a result of several internal or external degradation mechanism and which results in distress of the structure i.e. decrease in strength and integrity of the structure. the state of distress is often hidden from view and is only evident at a stage where there is significant reduction in strength of the structure. defects are open introduced during construction and are viewed during in services life. Some deterioration is viewed physically in the early age or during the services life of the structure in terms of spalling, surface crack, swelling and honeycombing. This deterioration collectively or individually results in reducing the load carrying capacity in terms of the distress of the structure. In this project, the common defects in the concrete structures and mapping techniques by nondestructive test are presented. Among the various techniques of the nondestructived tests, the Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) and DOCtor's impact echo were chosen for their effectiveness. The UPV is used to estimate the concrete strength, detecting flaws such as voids and cracks and also to investigate the effects of smaller diameter bar in the concrete. In detecting various sizea of voids by the Impact-echo test techiniques a format was suggested to identify the from the frequency spectrum. In the bridge condition assessment by nondestructive test techniques most common problem encountered were correlationof cube crushing strength to the UPV values, in order to determine residual strength of the structure in different enviromental conditions. also the other defects such as cracks and voids in the concrete, which does not have any standard guideline to identify them by theabove NDT techniques to use in the bridge condition assessment. This project has dealt with large number of specimens between the actual condition and those of the values given by the NDT results. A number of beam specimens were also cast with known defects in the concrete in order to obtain and suggest standard investigation procedure. 108 standard cubes with different grades and enviromental conditions were cast. Also eight beams and a slab were casting having known common defects. From the strength- UPV correlation nine numbers of regression equations were suggested. A standard transducer spacing has been suggested for detecting crack depth of to 50 to 125mm range. The effect of bar sizes on UPV test results was also obtained. Reinforced concrete slabs or decks having bar diameter greater than 10mm diameter will be affect the reading of UPV. Based on the obtained resuls a computer database system for NDT has been made to accomodate and fulfill necessary requirements of knowledge base system. Hence this knowledge base system will be used for bridge condition assessment.

Book excerpt: Reinforced and pre-stressed concrete are widely used for the construction of infrastructures such as bridges, industrial structures, buildings, etc. Most of the time, the quality of the concrete mix is assumed to be guaranteed but due to the congestion of reinforcement and the quality control exercised during placing and vibrating, honeycombs and voids are likely to be present in the hardened concrete. The presence of voids leads to the early deterioration of concrete and corrosion also sets in. The corrosion of reinforcement causes damage to the cover concrete and also section loss in the area of steel. In the case of pre-stressed concrete members, the corrosion leads to a catastrophic failure without any warning. Hence, it becomes necessary to evaluate the condition of concrete using Non Destructive Techniques (NDT) and Partially Destructive Techniques (PDT). The Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) method which is widely adopted till now gives the relative quality and integrity of concrete and is based on the transit time. The rebound hammer gives the quality of concrete in the cover zone based on the rebound number.

Book excerpt: This book focused on effectiveness of NDTs for detection of concrete deterioration or defects. Tests were performed to evaluate the feasibility of using Impact-Echo Method and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test in detecting defect and determining its depth during the early age concrete (between days 3 to day 28). Tests were performed on two RC Slabs Grade 30 and 40 at day 3,7,14 and 28 with a fabricated void at a known location. Tests were also performed to examine theoretically the relationship between the porosity of concrete at each stage and different strength with the accuracy of void depth detected. Both methods could detect defect in specimens during the early age. However, in the determination of depth of defect, Impact-Echo Test gave more accurate results. It is concluded that both methods can be used to assess the in-situ properties of concrete or as means for quality control on site since both tests could detect defects from day 3 and the accuracy ranges 55.75% to 99.05% from day 3 to day 28.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nondestructive impact-echo (IE) method offers a simple means for introducing compressional stress waves into a concrete element or slab and measuring the resonance frequencies associated with the reflections of the waves from any internal voids and the bottom of the slab. It is relatively effective for detecting internal voids or delaminations in concrete, which is the application for which it was developed. It may also be possible to use the method for indirect measurement of the thickness of a slab if the wave propagation velocity in the concrete is known. This study was conducted to determine whether the IE method, by itself, could replace the use of coring for quality-assurance measurements of the thickness of concrete slabs in newly built pavements. The results from tests conducted on three pavemems indicated that the wave velocity varied so much, not only between pavements but also within a pavement, that unacceptable errors can result when an average velocity is determined (through limited coring) for a pavemem and subsequently assumed for the entire pavement. To reduce the error to an acceptable level, the wave velocity at any test location must be measured to within an acceptable accuracy by another independent method. In pursuit of this approach, an indirect-transmission procedure based on ultrasonic (UT) measurement was incorporated and tested. This combined IE/UT procedure was able to measure thickness with absolute errors of 5 mm in one pavement and 7 mm in another, at a 90% probability. These results can be considered encouraging since the current procedure requires that the length of a core reported to the nearest 3 mm be the average of several measurements around the core and, in some cores, these measurements can have a spread of as much as 13 mm. In addition, it is expected that these errors can be reduced easily with the use of a transducer with a smaller contact face that would be less sensitive to roughness on the surface of grooved concrete pavements.

Book excerpt: Rebound Hammer Test and Non Destructive Testing (NDT) of Concrete are essential techniques used in the assessment of the quality, durability, and structural integrity of concrete structures. This book provides a guide to the principles, applications, and techniques involved in these methods. The ndt test for concrete book starts by introducing the basic properties of concrete, its construction process, and the reasons why testing is crucial. It then delves into the various methods of NDT, including Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity, Ground Penetrating Radar, and Impact Echo, among others. The focus of the book, however, is on the Rebound Hammer Test, which is one of the most widely used NDT methods for concrete. The rebound hammer test book discusses the theory behind the Rebound Hammer Test, how it works, and the factors that affect its accuracy. It provides detailed guidance on how to perform the test correctly and interpret the results. The book also covers the limitations of the test and its potential sources of error. In addition to the technical aspects of the Rebound Hammer Test and NDT, the book also covers the practical applications of these methods. It discusses how these techniques can be used to assess the quality and durability of concrete structures, identify defects and damage, and plan maintenance and repair activities. The NDT book includes a glossary of key terms and concepts, as well as a comprehensive set of frequently asked questions to help readers understand the material better. Overall, this book is an essential resource for engineers, technicians, and researchers working in the field of concrete construction and maintenance. It provides a thorough understanding of the Rebound Hammer Test and NDT, including the practical applications and limitations of these methods.

Book excerpt: This study evaluated various techniques that use mechanical waves for the evaluation of critical concrete properties, such as proper consolidation of the concrete during placement and strength development; changes in modulus; and the detection of cracks, voids, and delaminated regions. The methods evaluated were ultrasonic shear-wave tomography, ultrasonic pulse velocity, crosshole sonic logging, sonic echo-impulse response, spectral analysis of surface waves, and the use of an impact echo scanner on pavements and bridge structures. Ultrasonic shear-wave tomography can be successfully used to determine the major distressed areas in pavements. Crosshole sonic logging can detect voids in drilled shafts and can indicate concrete performance and quality. Sonic echo-impulse response can reliably detect voids but is not always able to establish a precise location because of the potential variability in wave velocity. However, it can still provide useful thickness or depth information. In addition, detection of distress is limited by the embedded length-to-diameter ratios of the foundation element being examined. The use of ultrasonic pulse velocity can improve the accuracy of sonic echo-impulse response measurements by providing the actual velocity of the concrete being evaluated. Use of the impact echo scanner can provide delamination data for structures with smooth surfaces. In addition to detecting the condition of the concrete elements, these methods can be used to help determine compliance with end-result specifications. Quality control and acceptance using end-result specifications requires at least three test results to determine variability, which can be easily obtained using nondestructive test methods. The results regarding spectral analysis of surface waves were promising, but additional validation work is required to determine the abilities of this technique to assess asphalt-overlaid concrete decks. This study showed that nondestructive mechanical wave methods can be successfully used in determining concrete quality and the extent of distress in concrete structures. The study recommended that these methods be used by the Virginia Department of Transportation for condition assessment. The next step is to continue collecting data on pavements and bridge structures using these techniques.
