Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deterioration of concrete in structure is a result of several degradation mechanisms and results in a decrease in the integrity of the structure. The state of deterioration is often hidden from view and is only evident at a stage where there is a significant reduction in the load carrying capacity. Ensuring better performance of concrete structures requires early detection of defects. Defects are often introduced during casting and detection during in-service life is often too late to remedy the situation.

Book excerpt: This book focused on effectiveness of NDTs for detection of concrete deterioration or defects. Tests were performed to evaluate the feasibility of using Impact-Echo Method and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test in detecting defect and determining its depth during the early age concrete (between days 3 to day 28). Tests were performed on two RC Slabs Grade 30 and 40 at day 3,7,14 and 28 with a fabricated void at a known location. Tests were also performed to examine theoretically the relationship between the porosity of concrete at each stage and different strength with the accuracy of void depth detected. Both methods could detect defect in specimens during the early age. However, in the determination of depth of defect, Impact-Echo Test gave more accurate results. It is concluded that both methods can be used to assess the in-situ properties of concrete or as means for quality control on site since both tests could detect defects from day 3 and the accuracy ranges 55.75% to 99.05% from day 3 to day 28.

This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In cold regions, freeze-thaw damage is considered one of the most important factors in concrete deterioration. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can cause internal cracking, scaling and even complete disintegration of concrete if the concrete is not properly designed. For the purpose of detecting internal freeze-thaw damage at early stages and minimize the subsequent cost of repair, effective and convenient concrete testing techniques are of great importance. The objective of this thesis was to evaluate the sensitivity of various nondestructive testing techniques in detecting freeze-thaw deterioration in concrete. Three nondestructive test (NDT) methods were investigated and compared in this thesis: the surface resistivity test (SR), the bulk resistivity test (BR) and the ultrasonic pulse velocity test (UPV). The pressure tension test (PT) has proven to be more sensitive in detecting the internal cracking of concrete compared to other tension tests. This thesis utilized this method to quantify the freeze-thaw damage in concrete specimens and further evaluate its applicability in evaluating the deterioration in concrete associated with cyclic freeze and thaw. Two concrete mixes of W/C 0.65 and 0.45 were prepared and cured for 28 days before being subjected to freeze-thaw cycling according to ASTM standard C666. NDT and pressure tension testing were carried out on the specimens to monitor deterioration over ongoing freeze-thaw cycles. The relationships between the test results of NDT and PT were studied. Test results showed that the three NDT methods exhibit various sensitivities and capabilities in detecting freeze-thaw damage in concrete. SR is very sensitive in detecting freeze-thaw damage, while BR and UPV are able to detect freeze-thaw deterioration only when the damage is more severe. In addition, testing showed that the surface resistivity is very sensitive to temperature change, an issue that must be considered when implementing this technique in the field. " --

Book excerpt: This authoritative book provides a comprehensive review of the highly important subject of non-destructive evaluation of reinforced concrete structures. Engineers have a range of sophisticated techniques at their disposal to assess the condition of reinforced concrete structures that do not cause material damage and which usually enable the structure to be used while the surveys are carried out. Non-destructive evaluation of the infrastructure also plays a key role in calculating and prioritising where money should be spent on repair or replacement. Providing details of related techniques and case studies, this book offers an overview of how to plan and implement the NDT of reinforced concrete structures.

Book excerpt: Infrared thermography (IRT) is a non-contact, non-invasive methodology which allows for detection of thermal energy that is radiated from objects in the infrared band of the electromagnetic spectrum, for conversion of such energy into a visible image (such as a surface temperature map). This feature represents a great potential to be exploited in a vast variety of fields from aerospace to civil engineering, to medicine, to agriculture, etc. However, IRT is still not adequately enclosed in industrial instrumentation and there are still potential users who might benefit from the use of such a technique and who are not aware of their existence. This e-book conveys information about basic IRT theory, infrared detectors, signal digitalization and applications of infrared thermography in many fields such as medicine, foodstuff conservation, fluid-dynamics, architecture, anthropology, condition monitoring, non destructive testing and evaluation of materials and structures. The volume promotes an exchange of information between the academic world and industry, and shares methodologies which were independently developed and applied in specific disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steel-reinforced concrete is used ubiquitously as a building material due to its unique combination of the high compressive strength of concrete and the high tensile strength of steel. Therefore, reinforced concrete is an ideal composite material that is used for a wide range of applications in structural engineering such as buildings, bridges, tunnels, harbor quays, foundations, tanks and pipes. To ensure durability of these structures, however, measures must be taken to prevent, diagnose and, if necessary, repair damage to the material especially due to corrosion of the steel reinforcement. The book examines the different aspects of corrosion of steel in concrete, starting from basic and essential mechanisms of the phenomenon, moving up to practical consequences for designers, contractors and owners both for new and existing reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. It covers general aspects of corrosion and protection of reinforcement, forms of attack in the presence of carbonation and chlorides, problems of hydrogen embrittlement as well as techniques of diagnosis, monitoring and repair. This second edition updates the contents with recent findings on the different topics considered and bibliographic references, with particular attention to recent European standards. This book is a self-contained treatment for civil and construction engineers, material scientists, advanced students and architects concerned with the design and maintenance of reinforced concrete structures. Readers will benefit from the knowledge, tools, and methods needed to understand corrosion in reinforced concrete and how to prevent it or keep it within acceptable limits.

Book excerpt: The research and its outcomes presented in this book treat applications of NDT techniques to on-site measurements. These on-site measurements have been marginally successful as each technique requires a particular analysis. In this regard, visualization and imaging of results are in great demand for practitioners and engineers for inspection. This volume, in which on-site measurements of concrete and masonry structures by NDT techniques are comprehensively summarized, focuses on the visualization procedure of the results measured. The book will therefore be of great value to the field.

Book excerpt: This book was proposed and organized as a means to present recent developments in the field of nondestructive testing of materials in civil engineering. For this reason, the articles highlighted in this editorial relate to different aspects of nondestructive testing of different materials in civil engineering—from building materials to building structures. The current trend in the development of nondestructive testing of materials in civil engineering is mainly concerned with the detection of flaws and defects in concrete elements and structures, and acoustic methods predominate in this field. As in medicine, the trend is towards designing test equipment that allows one to obtain a picture of the inside of the tested element and materials. From this point of view, interesting results with significance for building practices have been obtained
