Book excerpt: TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 506: Effective Utility Coordination: Application of Research and Current Practices documents the state of the practice regarding utility coordination. The objective of the project was to determine how previous research has been incorporated into current practice and compile information about how transportation agencies and utility stakeholders are scoping, conducting, and managing effective utility coordination. The report documents the core elements of effective utility coordination, as reported by state transportation agencies (STAs); current practices to manage consultant-led utility coordination, both stand-alone and those incorporated into design contracts; and current practices to perform in-house utility coordination.

Book Synopsis Standard Guideline for the Collection and Depiction of Existing Subsurface Utility Data by :
Download or read book Standard Guideline for the Collection and Depiction of Existing Subsurface Utility Data written by and published by Amer Society of Civil Engineers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CI/ASCE Standard 38-02 presents a credible system for classifying the quality of utility location information that is placed in design plans. The Standard addresses issues such as: how utility information can be obtained, what technologies are available to obtain that information; how that information can be conveyed to the information users; who should be responsible for typical collection and depiction tasks; what factors determine which utility quality level attribute to assign to data; and what the relative costs and benefits of the various quality levels are. Used as a reference or as part of a specification, the Standard will assist engineers, project and utility owners, and constructors in developing strategies to reduce risk by improving the reliability of information on existing subsurface utilities in a defined manner.

Book Synopsis Effectiveness of the Combined Transportation and Utility Construction Strategy by :
Download or read book Effectiveness of the Combined Transportation and Utility Construction Strategy written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adjustment of utilities prior to highway construction is a challenging operation from many perspectives. One major strategic approach that has emerged over the past 15 years is to combine utility adjustment work with the highway contractor's scope of work. Given the complications of the issues involved, there is a significant need for a decision support tool to provide guidance to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and utility decision makers as to when the Combined Transportation and Utility Construction (CTUC) approach should be applied. This research aims to document CTUC advantages-disadvantages trade-offs, to better understand those project circumstances with which the benefits of CTUC can be leveraged, and to provide a decision support tool to assist both TxDOT and utility decision makers in identifying significant issues to be addressed for a given utility adjustment.

Book Synopsis Enhancing the Resilience of the Nation's Electricity System by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Enhancing the Resilience of the Nation's Electricity System written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans' safety, productivity, comfort, and convenience depend on the reliable supply of electric power. The electric power system is a complex "cyber-physical" system composed of a network of millions of components spread out across the continent. These components are owned, operated, and regulated by thousands of different entities. Power system operators work hard to assure safe and reliable service, but large outages occasionally happen. Given the nature of the system, there is simply no way that outages can be completely avoided, no matter how much time and money is devoted to such an effort. The system's reliability and resilience can be improved but never made perfect. Thus, system owners, operators, and regulators must prioritize their investments based on potential benefits. Enhancing the Resilience of the Nation's Electricity System focuses on identifying, developing, and implementing strategies to increase the power system's resilience in the face of events that can cause large-area, long-duration outages: blackouts that extend over multiple service areas and last several days or longer. Resilience is not just about lessening the likelihood that these outages will occur. It is also about limiting the scope and impact of outages when they do occur, restoring power rapidly afterwards, and learning from these experiences to better deal with events in the future.

Book Synopsis Subsurface Utility Engineering Information Management for Airports by : James H. Anspach
Download or read book Subsurface Utility Engineering Information Management for Airports written by James H. Anspach and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis study is intended to provide airport operators, airport service providers, and utilities/infrastructure owners with ways in which information on subsurface utilities is collected, maintained, and used by airports, their consultants, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to increase the effectiveness of and enhance safety during infrastructure development programs at airports. It compares the current state of technology and effective processes from other industry sectors with what airports do today, allowing airports to consider areas for improvement. To gather relevant information on current practices, literature was reviewed and 16 airports were surveyed.

Book Synopsis European Right-of-way and Utilities Best Practices by : Richard Moeller
Download or read book European Right-of-way and Utilities Best Practices written by Richard Moeller and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As right-of-way acquisition and utilities coordination grow more complex, transportation agencies in the United States are under pressure to streamline the process of providing cleared right-of-way for highway projects. The Federal Highway Administration, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and the National Cooperative Highway Research Program sponsored a scanning study of England, Germany, Norway and the Netherlands to review best practices in right-of-way and utilities services. In the countries visited, the U.S. delegation observed a philosophy of sensitivity to the needs of property owners affected by highway projects, as well as innovative techniques for compensating owners. Highway agencies emphasize coordination with utilities to minimize delays. Right-of-way professionals undergo formal education and ongoing training to develop expertise in their field. The scanning team's recommendations for U.S. application include encouraging property owner input by involving owners in the design phase and using an in-depth interview process, creating a voluntary land consolidation pilot program, developing education programs for right-of-way professionals, and promoting greater coordination and communication between State transportation departments and utilities.
