Book excerpt: For a variety of economic and technical reasons, there has been a growing concern with the aging of complex systems and components and the role that maintenance can play in reducing this degradation. A study for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission was recently undertaken to identify effective maintenance practices that could be adapted by the nuclear industry in the United States to assist in managing the aging degradation of plant systems and components. Four organizations were examined to assess the influence that their maintenance programs have on their ability to address the systems and component aging degradation issues. An effective maintenance program was found to be essential to the management of system and component aging. The four key elements of an effective maintenance program that are important to an aging management program were identified. These are: the selection of critical systems and components; the development of an understanding of aging through the collection and analysis of equipment performance information; the development of appropriate preventive and predictive maintenance tasks to manage equipment and system aging degradation; the use of feedback mechanisms to continuously improve the management of aging systems and components. These elements were found to be common to all four organizations. In examining how the four organizations have structured their maintenance programs to include these key elements provides valuable lessons not only for the nuclear power industry, but also for any industrial organization that is concerned with the management of system and component aging degradation. This document provides detail, of these studies.

Book excerpt: Examines the concept of aging process facilities and infrastructure in high hazard industries and highlights options for dealing with the problem while addressing safety issues This book explores the many ways in which process facilities, equipment, and infrastructure might deteriorate upon continuous exposure to operating and climatic conditions. It covers the functional and physical failure modes for various categories of equipment and discusses the many warning signs of deterioration. Dealing with Aging Process Facilities and Infrastructure also explains how to deal with equipment that may not be safe to operate. The book describes a risk-based strategy in which plant leaders and supervisors can make more informed decisions on aging situations and then communicate them to upper management effectively. Additionally, it discusses the dismantling and safe removal of facilities that are approaching their intended lifecycle or have passed it altogether. Filled with numerous case studies featuring photographs to illustrate the positive and negative experiences of others who have dealt with aging facilities, Dealing with Aging Process Facilities and Infrastructure covers the causes of equipment failures due to aging and their consequences; plant management commitment and responsibility; inspection and maintenance practices for managing life cycle; specific aging asset integrity management practices; and more. Describes symptoms and causal mechanisms of aging in various categories of process equipment Presents key considerations for making informed risk-based decisions regarding the repair or replacement of aging process facilities and infrastructure Discusses practices for managing process facility and infrastructure life cycle Includes examples and case histories of failures related to aging Dealing with Aging Process Facilities and Infrastructure is an important book for industrial practitioners who are often faced with the challenge of managing process facilities and infrastructure as they approach the end of their useful lifecycle.

The professionals are developed, specializing in this area driven by market in a particular manufacturing or process industry or service suppliers etc. Thus, there is a definite need for effective asset management and maintenance practices that will positively influence critical success factors such as safety, product quality, speed of innovation, price, profitability, technical obsolesce, and reliable delivery. In competitive world there is a need to reduce manufacturing cost. There is humungous pressure on manufacturing function to adopt new technologies methods to improve productivity. One of the ways to gain competitive advantage is to pursue lean manufacturing. There are only a few companies address the significant synergies of lean and maintenance excellence. Many industries do not understand or not aware of one big opportunity area. The huge opportunity to reduce the manufacturing cost especially in a plant where there is a capacity crunch is not appreciated by all.” Zero breakdown “is not just a buzz word but reality today and this zero-breakdown concept, can bring about huge savings in manufacturing costs. In industrial world the awareness of this important function is rapidly increasing. However, the effectiveness and result orientation towards these activities varies a lot. Hence this has become a topic of research and efforts are made to understand the factors, actions and their impact and results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time-dependent effects of aging on component cooling water (CCW) systems in nuclear power plants has been studied and documented as part of a research program sponsored by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. It was found that age related degradation leads to failures in the CCW system which can result in an increase in system unavailability, if not properly detected and mitigated. To identify effective methods of managing this degradation, information on inspection, monitoring, and maintenance practices currently available was obtained from various operating plants and reviewed. The findings were correlated with the most common aging mechanisms and failure modes and a compilation of aging detection and mitigation practices was formulated. This paper discusses the results of this work.
