This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a member of the Board of Trustees for a private school is certainly an honor. You are asked to take into your care a school--to ensure that each student's education fulfills the school's mission, and that all students are nurtured and developed to their benefit. You must carry out that care by providing support-resources-to the School Head. Your relationship to the school-as with all Trustees--determines whether your school will be successful in the long term.Being a Board member is also somewhat puzzling. If you're like many Trustees, you're not sure how it happened. Maybe you were approached at a social event. Maybe another Board member had talked to you a while ago about it on the phone; you may even have forgotten the conversation. Maybe you were serving on a committee and this seemed the next logical step. You've become a private school Trustee. Now what? This book is based on more than four decades of working with the Boards of hundreds of private schools. Independent School Management (ISM) has honed its research and recommendations over those years to provide the best possible service to our schools. We hope you'll find the following theory and advice valuable as you better prepare your Board to plan for your school's future. Chapters include: * The Role of the Trustee* The Board's Foundation and Strategic Structures* Understanding Private School Finances* Strategic Planning and Strategic Financial Planning* The ISM Stability Markers* Purpose and Outcome Statements* ISM Success Predictors* Recruiting and Orienting Board Members* The Board Committees* Board Meetings and Other Functions* Board-School Head Relationships* The Board's Role in Fundraising* Strategic Board Assessment* A Sample Board Commitment and Trustee HandbookIndependent School Management (ISM) is a family owned company dedicated to the advancement of private school management. ISM reaches over 7,000 private-independent schools, and serves over 200,000 students annually with advice, assistance, and creative solutions. Administrators in private schools of all types and sizes turn to ISM for advice and assistance on an array of management challenges, including student recruitment and retention, fundraising, strategic and long-range planning, Board-Head relations, personnel, plant expansion, mergers, leadership training, and creative insurance solutions. This book is based on more than four decades of working with the Boards of hundreds of private schools. We've honed our research and recommendations over those years to provide the best possible service to our schools. Book excerpt: The organization and responsibilities of trustees of independent schools has changed and increased greatly over the last decade. The first chapter gives a summary of independent school trusteeship that may aid in the orientation of new trustees. The five concepts of trusteeship are discussed: ethos, change, partnership, leadership, and volunteer service. Chapter 2 breaks down the board organization and describes the duties of officers and committees, particularly, board size, board composition, board meetings, and trustee selection, orientation, and evaluation. The third chapter describes the board's responsibility for the establishment of the school's mission, formation of board policy, assessment of the school's performance, financial management, and development and fund raising activities. Chapter 4 focuses on the role of the head of the school and the relationship between board and head. Chapter 5 deals with the search process made by the board in the selection of the new head of school. Sample board chair and head evaluation forms are appended. (SI)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School boards have the potential to build an extraordinary future for our children. The leadership of the school board can launch the potential in every child and educator in their schools, or it can cripple and discourage learning communities. Elected trustees play a critical role in today's school systems. As policy-makers, governors and community representatives, they influence the direction and achievement of schools within their jurisdiction. Administrators new to the school board table must quicklyacquire comprehensive knowledge of the mandate and purpose of the school board, and how to work with trustees to lead the school district to attain its educational goals. Exploring facets of school board governance such as the role of democracy, public finance, accountability, purposeful meetings, and how to work with the personalities at the table, this book offers foundational training for board members and general knowledge for persons interested in knowing what school trustees actually do. Thoroughly understanding the purpose of the school board, and what it means to 'guard the trust' on behalf of the citizenry is critical to improved schools and quality education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual, intended to serve independent schools, is an update on an earlier evaluation of school heads and trustees. Section 1, "Evaluation and Why It Matters," emphasizes the relationship between performance evaluation and school purposes. "Examples of Evaluation of Performance," section 2, illustrates planned evaluation of six schools. Suggestions in section 3, "Some Dos and Don'ts for Evaluation," include: (1) evaluate performance against reasonably specific expectations; (2) link evaluation with long-range school objectives; and (3) include staff opinions. Expectations from trustees are detailed in section 4, "Evaluating the Performance of Trustees." Questions should involve views on education relevant to school purposes and ability to judge policy with detachment. Recommended methods are the "directed essay," evaluation by chairperson and head, and evaluation workshops. Section 5, "Evaluating the Performance of School Heads," suggests using the directed essay or a form (a sample is given). Other considerations are staff opinions and procedures for terminating the head's appointment. "Special Situations, Problems, and Opportunities," section 6, enumerates evaluation circumstances that require emphasis. Situations include the strong, reluctant head or board; the head as the school's most stable, senior person; a board dominating ingroup; and school problems. The final section, "Evaluation Essentials," offers recommendations to maintain quality evaluation. Appendices occupying nearly half the document provide sample instruments. (CJH)
