Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis· seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac· tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.

Book excerpt: This manual gives a practical, in-depth look at sprinkle irrigation in California as used on vegetable crops. This manual provides practical information on the design, management, and maintenance of the sprinkle irrigation methods commonly used in California for irrigating field and row crops, with a focus on hand-move, wheel line, and portable solid-set systems. Other systems, not commonly used in California are also discussed. Inside you'll find discussion of management considerations such as when to irrigate, how much water to apply, and how to monitor soil moisture. You’ll also find an overview of uniformity and efficiency, sprinkle lateral design considerations, calculating pressure losses along laterals, factors affecting uniformity, effect of pressure spacing, and wind on catch can uniformity, as well as evaluating and improving sprinkle irrigation systems. A chapter on energy considerations covers pump selection, factors that affect pumping plant performance, pump performance tests, variable speed drives for pumping plants, and measures to consider to reduce energy use. Handy tables clearly illustrate key concepts to help you with decision making and trouble-shooting. Contains 46 illustrations and 28 tables, as well as 8 appendices of selected cover-crop coefficient relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2024 in the subject Agrarian Studies, , language: English, abstract: This book on drip and sprinkler irrigation system design evaluates the latest available books and research in the field and presents them in a concise and clear manner that can be useful as a reference for graduate and undergraduate students, including practicing engineers. The reference book contains up-to-date data and information on the design of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems. The book is divided into two parts; the first part deals with the basics of sprinkler irrigation and goes deeper into the design part by mostly using the Keller and Bliesner book, and the second part details all about drip irrigation system right from the components and types to the design detail. Agriculture originated when the communities began adding food growing to hunting and foraging, in the Neolithic era, 8,000 – 10,000 years ago. In the beginning of this process agriculture was based on rainfall and uncontrolled river floods. Irrigation as an activity, started to develop in places where natural water resources, mainly rains, were insufficient to support the current population. This, in fact, was one of the main reasons for the appearance of central authorities involved in water production and control.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design text, Sprinkle and Trickle Irrigation, opens up a new and clear window through which to view the physics, economics, design, and manage ment of pressurized irrigation systems. A broad array of system types and ap plications have been covered in detail to provide for complete understanding of systems design. Topics include soil-water-plant relations, general planning con cepts, hydraulics, economics, sizing, operation, maintenance, and special uses. Pressurized irrigation system types covered include hand-line, wheel-line, solid set, traveler, center-pivot, linear-moving and big-gun-sprinkler systems, pump ing systems, and a broad array of trickle system components. The work in this text culminates earlier major works by Jack Keller on the W. R. Ames Company Irrigation Handbook (1967), Rain Bird Sprinkler Man ufacturing Corp. 's Trickle Irrigation Design (1975), and the USDA-Soil Con servation Service's National Engineering Handbook, Section 15: Irrigation Chapter 11: Sprinkle Irrigation (1983) and Chapter 15: Trickle Irrigation (1984). These earlier works form the foundation upon which the majority of currently used design texts are based. The years of design and troubleshooting experiences of the authors and wide ranges of environments and design appli cations in which they have worked have resulted in the substance and robustness of this text in stated relationships and procedures.

Book excerpt: Increasing the efficiency of water use and enhancing agricultural water productivity at all levels of the production chains are becoming priorities in a growing number of countries. In particular, shifting to modern on-farm irrigation practices can contribute to a substantial increase in both water use efficiency and water productivity. The objective of this handbook is to provide a practical guide on the use of pressurized irrigation techniques to farmers, irrigation technicians, and extension workers in the field. In this second edition, the handbook has been considerably revised, including new chapters on low-cost drip irrigation and pipe distribution systems for smallholders.--Publisher's description.
