Book excerpt: Salmon smolts undergo physiological changes in the spring that are important for successful migration to seawater. Species that are widely distributed may differ in timing of physiological changes associated with smelting. In my first study, I compared indices of smolt characteristics among populations that differ in migration distance to the ocean. Fraser River sockeye salmon from four regions in the watershed were intercepted at different times during migration to characterize the parr-smolt transformation. Gill Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) activity was highly variable at the start of migration, and was not explained by the distance from the ocean. Gill NKA activity changes with migration were also highly variable, but consistently smolts in the ocean had the highest gill NKA activities. The nature of smelting appears to be dynamic and variation was not based on the region of origin, timing during migration, or on the year of migration. The duration of time when anadromous salmon are able to survive in seawater - the smolt window - is influenced by temperature. In my second study, I found that warm water temperature abbreviated the smolt window. Additionally, isoforms of the gill NKA enzyme and endocrine signals suggest that the stimulus for smelting occurred prior emigration from the natal lake. Modeling the thermal experience that smolts encountered as they migrated downstream to the ocean in 2012 suggested Chilko fish did not experience temperatures as warm as the temperatures that abbreviated the smolt window in my study. Furthermore, climate change projections for temperature may not limit successful emigration of Chilko sockeye salmon smolts from central British Columbia to the ocean - but changes in other abiotic and biotic factors may confound this prediction.

Book excerpt: "Conservation efforts for critically endangered Snake River sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) have been partially hindered by high en route mortality of adult fish during their ~1,450 kilometer freshwater spawning migration. Through the 1990s, Snake River sockeye were poised on the brink of extinction, with annual returns averaging fewer than five fish. A moderate recovery began in 1999, when the first adult progeny from a captive broodstock program returned from the ocean. The largest run in several decades returned in 2000, with 299 fish counted at Lower Granite Dam on the Snake River. Taking advantage of this rare opportunity, we collected and radio-tagged 31 adults at the dam and then monitored their migration behavior and survival over ~750 kilometers. Tagged fish migrated rapidly through the Lower Granite reservoir and successively more slowly through each upstream reach. Successful and unsuccessful fish migrated at similar rates through the lower study reaches, after which unsuccessful fish migrated significantly more slowly than successful fish. Survival dramatically declined late in the run after mean water temperatures exceeded 21 °C and daily maximums reached 23-24 °C. Several fish displayed thermoregulatory behavior during the warmest period, using cooler water from tributaries including the Clearwater and Grande Ronde rivers. Fish with injuries at the time of tagging (e.g., head injuries, lesions, gill net marks) were less likely to survive than fish without notable injuries. Notably, fish with injuries were concentrated in the later portion of the run, suggesting possible condition-dependent delay during migration in the lower Columbia and Snake rivers. Overall, results strongly suggest indirect sublethal temperature effects, possibly mediated by poor initial fish condition. Migration in water temperatures near tolerance thresholds may exacerbate mortality risks, and these risks are most likely for fish with later migration timing. In fact, sockeye salmon counts at Ice Harbor indicate that there may have been recent selection against later-timed adult sockeye salmon. High en route mortality of Snake River sockeye will likely persist or increase given projections for continued warming of their migration corridor."--Abstract (page iv).

Book excerpt: The time period in which juvenile salmon remain in an estuary varies greatly among and within populations, with some individuals passing through estuaries in a matter of hours, while others remain in the estuary for several months. This individual variation in estuary use suggests that there may be underlying differences in individual salmon condition that temporally mitigate the selection of habitat, such as smolt size (fork length, mass, condition factor), stored energy (lipids and proteins), and osmoregulatory function (gill N+-K+-ATPase activity, NKA). I investigated the role of physical and physiological condition on the selection of estuarine and ocean habitat by sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) smolts intercepted at the initiation of their downstream migration from Chilko Lake, Fraser River, B.C.. Since juvenile salmon energetic costs increase with rising salinity, I expected that smolts of lower physiological condition (i.e. low condition factor, poor energetic status and low NKA) would prefer to remain in the freshwater environment of the estuary, while smolts of higher physiological condition would prefer saline waters in the estuary and potentially indicate more rapid ocean entry. Behavioural salinity preference experiments were conducted on unfed smolts (n = 263) held in freshwater at three time intervals during their downstream migration period, representing the expected timing for lake exit, estuary entry, and ocean entry, at 0, 1, and 3 weeks respectively. Smolt condition factor (K), energetic stores and NKA predicted salinity preference behaviour in the estuary and ocean outmigration stages, but not at lake exit. Our results suggest that smolt physiological condition upon reaching the estuary may influence migratory behaviour and habitat selection, providing novel evidence on the temporally dependent interplay of physiology, behaviour and migration in wild juvenile Pacific salmon. As juvenile migratory behaviour is linked to physiological condition, and physiological condition is determined by productivity and competition within the rearing habitat, the importance of estuaries likely varies across years and within a population cohort; thus estuaries may be of heightened importance for wild juvenile salmon in years of poor freshwater growth conditions. These findings support the growing body of evidence on the importance of conserving both rearing habitat for juvenile growth potential and estuarine habitat for smolt refugia before ocean entry.

Book excerpt: Pacific salmon carry out long distance spawning migrations from ocean feeding grounds to natal freshwater streams. Because many salmon rivers are dammed, fishways are required to enable individuals to pass through dams and reach upstream spawning areas. However, many fishways are ineffective, preventing or delaying upstream passage, suggesting a need to monitor and evaluate these facilities. I conducted a literature review of studies evaluating the effectiveness of fishways to assess what taxa and life-stages have been studied, the questions asked during evaluation, and how these varied by time or geographic location. The majority of studies focused on adult fishes (68%) and the order Salmoniformes (58%). Many studies evaluated exogenous mechanisms of passage failure, such as environmental or structural factors (69%). Few studies examined endogenous (i.e. physiological) factors or post-passage consequences, information that is necessary to understand passage failure and inform mitigation strategies. A field study was carried out to evaluate the impact of a dam and fishway on the spawning migrations of sockeye salmon in the Seton-Anderson watershed in British Columbia. I used acoustic telemetry, non-lethal biopsies, and an experimental approach, releasing fish either up- or down-stream of the dam and comparing behaviour and mortality between the two groups. Fishway passage efficiency was 80% and most failure was associated with failing to locate the entrance. Attraction to the fishway entrance varied with water discharge volume from the dam, with the longest delays and highest failure rate at the highest discharge. Fish released downstream of the dam suffered higher mortality in lakes upstream of the fishway (27%) compared to fish released downstream of the dam (7%), suggesting post-passage consequences that reduce survival. Sockeye migrating through two thermally stratified lakes upstream of the dam were used as models to investigate the hypothesis that temperatures.

Book excerpt: Rapidly warming water temperatures associated with climate change represent a substantial disturbance to the habitat of aquatic ectothermic organisms. For salmonid fishes (family Salmonidae), early life history survival and timing of reproduction and development are closely tied to temperature, such that altered thermal regimes could alter patterns of survival or shift phenology into a mismatch with the environment. Because temperature is the dominant driver of developmental rates, empirical statistical models have been developed to predict the timing of hatching and fry emergence based on incubation temperature. In this thesis I explored how the timing of hatching and emergence may shift in response to warming temperatures and how spawning timing across an Alaskan landscape is shaped by incubation temperatures experienced by sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) embryos and alevin. Additionally, I quantified the relative roles of genetics and environmentally induced plasticity on the timing of hatching in two populations of sockeye salmon from the Iliamna Lake system, Alaska by rearing them in common garden conditions in the laboratory. To meet these goals I reformulated a widely cited developmental model to incorporate variability in natural regimes and use it to predict hatching timing over the course of the spawning duration for 25 populations of Bristol Bay sockeye salmon. Additionally, I hind- and forecasted lake temperature based off historical and predicted air temperatures to estimate and predict hatching for a single population. I found that predicted hatching timing for wild populations varied between 58 and 260 days, and was largely variable as a result of habitat thermal heterogeneity and parental spawn time. I also predicted a three-week decrease in hatching timing over the course of the next century for a single beach spawning population, which was just beyond historic variability. Counter to expectations, for a subset of populations hatching and emergence timing variability exceeded that of spawning timing, indicating the relationship between spawning timing and incubation temperature may be weaker than expected. The results of the common garden experiment revealed indistinguishable differences between populations in hatching timing across five temperature scenarios, but strong plasticity as timing differed between 74 and 189 days in the warmest to coolest treatment. Furthermore, I detected family-specific differences in hatching timing both within and among treatments consistent with heritable developmental rates and gene by environment interactions in days to hatch, where the interaction between treatment and family was as high as 10 days difference in hatching. Population or family-specific survival in this experiment did not differ in response to temperature suggesting a lack of thermal adaptation in this regard during this life stage in these populations.
