Book excerpt: Abstract: An increasingly popular type of ceramic utilized in machined dental restorations is tetragonal zirconia polycrystals stabilized with 3 mol% yttria (3Y-TZP). The superior physical properties of 3Y-TZP can be attributed to the material's ability to undergo phase transformation. Transformation toughening produces internal compressive stresses that work against the further propagation of internal cracks and other intrinsic flaws. The outstanding mechanical properties of the sintered 3Y-TZP make it suitable for both single and short span multiple unit restorations in the molar region. The unfortunate downside to the outstanding mechanical properties of sintered 3Y-TZP is that the metastability of zirconia greatly reduces the material's machinability in the fully sintered state. Machining in the pre-sintered state, however, allows complex shapes to be fabricated easily, accurately, and quickly. In spite of the increased machinability associated with the softened pre-sintered state, the intrinsic brittle nature of ceramics may still make them susceptible to the development of surface flaws and microcracking. It is imperative to investigate the types of flaws that may be induced by the milling process as well as their influence on the overall reliability and strength of the material. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of surface finish prior to sintering on the flexural strength and reliability of 3Y-TZP. One hundred forty discs were fabricated and randomly divided into seven groups of twenty. For each group, a different surface treatment was applied: (1.) polishing (4000 grit), (2.) roughening (1200 grit), (3.) roughening (600grit), (4.) roughening (600grit) & slurry immersion, (5.) indenting (1.9N), (6.) indenting (4.9N) and (7.) as-cut.
