Book excerpt: Maximum benefits from diazotropic and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza plant growth promoting biofertilizers could be fully utilized through a systematic strategy. This will allow yield to be maintained or even increased while fertilizer applications are reduced. The effects of biofertilizers, VAMF and herbicide, and their interactions at different recommended rates of inorganic fertilizer on the growth and yield of hybrid corn treated with Bio-N were determined in this study. The experiment was performed in RCBD in three replications where the following factors were considered: inoculation with active strain of Azospirillum (Bio-N) and soil-based biofertilizer containing mycorrhizal fungi (Mycovam), three levels of Nitrogen Fertilizers; and absence or presence of biocides. Results showed potential benefits of microbial biofertilizers in combination with suboptimal and optimal amount of N Fertlizer. The treatment combination of 3/4 recommended rate of inorganic fertilizer with Mykovam (T9) had the highest yield (7.895 T) which is near the potential economic yield of 8 tons per hectare. Results further showed that there were differences in growth and growth indices of corn plants as affected by the inorganic fertilizers and in combination with biofertilizers with or without herbicide. Bio-N (T18) and combination of inorganic fertilizers with biofertilizers without herbicide (T19 and T20) were found to be potential substitutes to the commercial inorganic fertlizers based on the Marginal Analysis.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was conducted to determine the effect of weed control methods and time of nitrogen fertilizer application on yield and nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency of corn and to identify weed control practice(s) and time(s) of nitrogen fertilizer application that promote nitrogen use efficiency and high yield of corn at minimum cost. Weed control methods had no significant effects on all parameters studied except for leaf area index (LAI) and weed fresh weight at 50 DAP. Leaf area indices from W6 (handweeding four times) and W5 (preemergence application of atrazine + pendimethalin + hilling-up) were significantly higher than W1 (off-barring + hilling-up) and W2 (hoeing + hilling-up). W6 gave the mst effective control of weeds based on fresh weed weight at 50 DAP. W2 and W5 provided poor control of weeds. W1 and W4 (preemergence application of pendimethalin + spot hoeing + hilling-up) provided less satisfactory control of weeds than W6 but better control than W3 (preemergence application of atrazine + spot hoeing + hilling-up). The differences in crop LAI and weed control efficacies were not reflected in grain yield and nitrogen use efficiency of the crop indicating that all the six weed control methods provided adequate control of weeds in the trial site. The time of N fertilizer application signifantly affected early crop growth and vigor, days to tasseling and silking, plant and ear height, leaf area index, total dry matter yied, ear kernel filling length, number of kernel rows per ear, number of kernels (...).

This book was released on 2019 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greater soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) dry matter found in current soybean varieties and reduced seeding rates can impact nutrient uptake and grain yield potential and may influence grain yield response to fertilizer applications. Field experiments were initiated in Richville and Lansing, MI to determine the effects of seeding rate and fertilizer applications on plant growth, nutrient accumulation, grain yield, and profit. Increasing seeding rate from 123,500 to 222,400 seeds ha-1 increased grain yield 304 kg ha-1 but no statistical differences were observed above 222,400 seeds ha-1. Subsurface MESZ applications increased grain yield 241 to 261 kg ha-1 but did not interact with seeding rate. The influence of soil nutrient concentrations and environmental conditions on grain yield may take precedence over reduced interplant competition in decreased seeding rates. Weather volatility and closer synchronization of nitrogen (N) application with peak corn (Zea mays) uptake may provide opportunity for enhanced N use efficiency and grain yield with sidedress N placement closer to the plant. Field studies were initiated in Richville and Lansing, MI to assess the effects of multiple N timing and sidedress (SD) placement strategies on corn growth, grain yield, agronomy efficiency (AE) of applied N, and profit. Grain yield was not influenced by N strategy during dry soil conditions but AE increased with V4-6 N applications and coulter-inject SD N placement. Corn N response may be influenced by environmental conditions therefore weather forecasts and environmental trends should be considered when deliberating N timing and SD placement strategies.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three experiments were conducted to identify mechanisms that might explain variations in weed responses to nitrogen (N) fertilization. The first experiment investigated the responses of two crop and six weed species to N fertilization rate and shading in a growth chamber environment. The dry weight and leaf area responses, among species, to N supply and shading were positively correlated with their maximum relative growth rates with the high N fertilization rate. Relative growth rates, among species, were negatively correlated with mean seed weights. The second experiment was conducted in field plots to investigate the effects of N fertilization timing and corn (Zea mays L.) population density on giant foxtail (Setaria faberi Herrm.), velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medicus), and common waterhemp (Amaranthus rudis Sauer) competition with corn. Giant foxtail reduced corn yield when no N fertilizer was applied until late June (POST N) but not when N fertilizer was applied prior to corn emergence (PRE N). Velvetleaf seed yield was greater with the PRE N application than the POST N application, but giant foxtail seed yield was lower with PRE N than with POST N. The high corn population density reduced velvetleaf and giant foxtail seed yields, compared to the low corn population density. Corn, velvetleaf and giant foxtail seed yields were associated with their heights and light interception in mid-season. N fertilization timing and corn population density did not affect common waterhemp. A third experiment investigated the interactions between corn and velvetleaf seedlings grown in a replacement series, as affected by N fertilization rate, in a glasshouse environment. N effects on seedling size of each species were positively correlated with the population density of that species. Relative yield responses suggested that velvetleaf size was reduced by corn competition and that antagonism might have occurred. A growth analysis of corn and velvetleaf seedling monocultures identified N responses. The relative growth rates of velvetleaf were greater than those of corn. The net assimilation rate of velvetleaf was lower with the high N supply than with low N, perhaps due to an increase in self-shading with high N.

Book excerpt: Although chemical pesticides safeguard crops and improve farm productivity, they are increasingly feared for their potentially dangerous residues and their effects on ecosystems. The Future Role of Pesticides explores the role of chemical pesticides in the decade ahead and identifies the most promising opportunities for increasing the benefits and reducing the risks of pesticide use. The committee recommends R&D, program, and policy initiatives for federal agriculture authorities and other stakeholders in the public and private sectors. This book presents clear overviews of key factors in chemical pesticide use, including: Advances in genetic engineering not only of pest-resistant crops but also of pests themselves. Problems in pesticide useâ€"concerns about the health of agricultural workers, the ability of pests to develop resistance, issues of public perception, and more. Impending shifts in agricultureâ€"globalization of the economy, biological "invasions" of organisms, rising sensitivity toward cross-border environmental issues, and other trends. With a model and working examples, this book offers guidance on how to assess various pest control strategies available to today's agriculturist.
