Book excerpt: "The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of surface conditions on the heat transfer for nucleate pool boiling from flat horizontal surfaces. Experiments were carried out using Refrigerant-1l at atmospheric pressure as the test fluid with Inconel-600 as the heater material. The heat transfer coefficient was determined for mirror finished, chemically etched, glass beaded and sandpaper roughened heater surfaces over heat flux ranging for 0 to 18000 BTU/HR SQ FT. At a given heat flux, the heat transfer coefficient was found to be the lowest for mirror finished surface and the highest for sandpaper roughened surface"--Abstract, leaf ii.

This book was released on 1971 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stable boiling in a rotating cylindrical annulus with continuous through-flow of water was obtained at heat fluxes as high as 818 000 Btu/(hr)(ft^2) (2. 58 MW/m^2) at atmospheric pressure. Incipient- and nucleate -boiling heat -transfer coefficients were obtained at accelerations up to 400 g's. Measurements were made of void fractions, radial temperature profiles, and wall pressures in the boiling fluid. Convective secondary-flow cells and fluid temperature inversions were revealed. Increased fluid thicknesses increased heat-transfer coefficients, but inlet liquid subcooling had no effect. Coefficients increased with acceleration at low heat fluxes, but at high fluxes varied less than the usual data scatter.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study constituted an examination of both nucleate boiling and maximum heat flux characteristics of liquid nitrogen boiling from characterized surfaces. Several textures of gold plated copper surfaces were studied in addition to silver and silver oxide surfaces. Data were taken over a wide range of reduced pressures. All surfaces were examined using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Data and micrograph comparison revealed that both surface chemistry and surface roughness affect the nucleate boiling characteristics of liquid nitrogen. These effects are separated from each other showing that nucleate boiling is a function of both surface chemistry and topography. Surface roughness was found to have a significant effect on the maximum heat flux with rougher surfaces yielding higher heat flux values. The temperature difference at burnout was found to be a function of both surface chemistry and roughness. Some existing correlations for both nucleate boiling and maximum heat fluxes were examined and shown to inadequately predict the data, primarily because of inability to account for surface roughness and/or surface-fluid interaction as affected by surface chemistry. A maximum temperature difference correlation tested predicted burnout temperature differences well. The necessity to age a surface in the fluid to be boiled was found not to be a result of adsorbed gases, but probably a result of impurities acquired on the surface that must be removed. Attempts to observe hysteresis is were unsuccessful. Hysteresis was found not to be a function of adsorbed inert gases. Data indicated that one mechanism of heat transfer by nucleate boiling will not suffice for all pressures. An existing nucleate boiling correlation was modified to allow for a mechanism change and predicted the data better than other correlations tested"--Abstract, pages ii-iii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering students in a wide variety of engineering disciplines from mechanical and chemical to biomedical and materials engineering must master the principles of transport phenomena as an essential tool in analyzing and designing any system or systems wherein momentum, heat and mass are transferred. This textbook was developed to address that need, with a clear presentation of the fundamentals, ample problem sets to reinforce that knowledge, and tangible examples of how this knowledge is put to use in engineering design. Professional engineers, too, will find this book invaluable as reference for everything from heat exchanger design to chemical processing system design and more. * Develops an understanding of the thermal and physical behavior of multiphase systems with phase change, including microscale and porosity, for practical applications in heat transfer, bioengineering, materials science, nuclear engineering, environmental engineering, process engineering, biotechnology and nanotechnology * Brings all three forms of phase change, i.e., liquid vapor, solid liquid and solid vapor, into one volume and describes them from one perspective in the context of fundamental treatment * Presents the generalized integral and differential transport phenomena equations for multi-component multiphase systems in local instance as well as averaging formulations. The molecular approach is also discussed with the connection between microscopic and molecular approaches * Presents basic principles of analyzing transport phenomena in multiphase systems with emphasis on melting, solidification, sublimation, vapor deposition, condensation, evaporation, boiling and two-phase flow heat transfer at the micro and macro levels * Solid/liquid/vapor interfacial phenomena, including the concepts of surface tension, wetting phenomena, disjoining pressure, contact angle, thin films and capillary phenomena, including interfacial balances for mass, species, momentum, and energy for multi-component and multiphase interfaces are discussed * Ample examples and end-of-chapter problems, with Solutions Manual and PowerPoint presentation available to the instructors
