Book excerpt: In general, yield reduction in most dryland maize growing areas of South Africa occur because seasonal rainfall distribution is erratic with annual variation that cannot be predicted accurately. Cultivar selection, planting date and plant density are other factors that consistently affect maize yield. Long growing season maize cultivars are higher yielding, particularly under conditions of good moisture and nutrient supply. However, as both moisture and nutrient availability becomes more limiting, yield tends to decline. Short growing season maize cultivars could yield more than long season counterparts because they can maximize the growing season and potentially reach the critical flowering stage before traditional midsummer droughts occur. The short growing season maize cultivars, which have only recently been developed, have traits, which can address the problem of reduced yield, which is ascribed to midsummer drought. There has been no previous effort to evaluate the effects of planting dates and plant densities on yield and yield components of these short and ultra-short growth period maize cultivars. This prompted research in the 2004/05 growing season. One field experiment was conducted at each of two selected areas (Bethlehem & Potchefstroom) in the Maize Triangle of South Africa. The aim was to evaluate the response of short and ultra-short growth period maize cultivars to planting dates and plant densities at two localities with distinct environmental conditions. The effects of planting date, plant density and cultivar on yield and yield components were investigated. Both yield and yield components were affected by planting date, plant density and cultivar at both localities. At both localities early and optimum planting dates as well as low and optimum plant densities promoted increases in yield components, which contributed to increased grain yield. As for the cultivars, PAN6017 proved to be the most consistent since it out-performed other cultivars in terms of both vegetative growth, yield components and grain yield at both localities. At both localities, plant height, leaf area index and dry matter yield were affected by both planting date and plant density, with optimum planting date and optimum plant density contributing to highest yield components and yield. PAN 6017 was superior to the other cultivars at all planting dates and plant densities at both localities. In order to make findings from a study such as this applicable to the Maize Triangle, more research on short and ultra-short growth period maize cultivars should be conducted over a wider range of locations and seasons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on early germination, one of maize germplasm most important strategies for adapting to drought-induced stress. Some genotypes have the ability to adapt by either reducing water losses or by increasing water uptake. Drought tolerance is also an adaptive strategy that enables crop plants to maintain their normal physiological processes and deliver higher economical yield despite drought stress. Several processes are involved in conferring drought tolerance in maize: the accumulation of osmolytes or antioxidants, plant growth regulators, stress proteins and water channel proteins, transcription factors and signal transduction pathways. Drought is one of the most detrimental forms of abiotic stress around the world and seriously limits the productivity of agricultural crops. Maize, one of the leading cereal crops in the world, is sensitive to drought stress. Maize harvests are affected by drought stress at different growth stages in different regions. Numerous events in the life of maize crops can be affected by drought stress: germination potential, seedling growth, seedling stand establishment, overall growth and development, pollen and silk development, anthesis silking interval, pollination, and embryo, endosperm and kernel development. Though every maize genotype has the ability to avoid or withstand drought stress, there is a concrete need to improve the level of adaptability to drought stress to address the global issue of food security. The most common biological strategies for improving drought stress resistance include screening available maize germplasm for drought tolerance, conventional breeding strategies, and marker-assisted and genomic-assisted breeding and development of transgenic maize. As a comprehensive understanding of the effects of drought stress, adaptive strategies and potential breeding tools is the prerequisite for any sound breeding plan, this brief addresses these aspects.

Book excerpt: An analysis of growth of maize in relation to water in the soil-plant system was conducted in the field at Davis, California. The time course of root and aerial growth, and water uptake was investigated under conditions of a mild prolonged water stress, with emphasis of defining the soil and crop water status, photosynthesis and the generation of the yield and yield components also were studied. Hybrid maize was grown in deep alluvial soil with high mositure holding capacity. Three irrigation treatment were: a) Weekly 5-cm irrigation starting 21 days after planting (I treatment); b) No irrigation (NI treatment); c) Weekly 5-cm irrigation starting 55 days after planting (155 treatment). Shoot growth. NI treatment, compared to I treatment, reduced crop height 6.5% leaf area 11% although leaf y (water potential) generally was only 2 bars lower at midday during vegetative growth. Diunally, leaf elongation rate (in both treatment) was unespectedly fastest in early afternoon when leaf y was near the daily minimum. Leaf (solute potential) changes lagged behind y so high occurred at near minimum y values, and daytime elongation rates (presumably when temperature was not limiting) correlated with - leaf changes were associated with those of oraganic solutes; soluble leaf carbohydrates changes accounted for 40% of fluctuations. Consistently lower leaf elongation rates in NI treatment could m-not be explained by differences alone, however. Root growth water absorption. Water uptake at various soil depth and times (...).

Book excerpt: Maize (Zea mays, L.) is one of the most important cereal crops in the world and ranks the third of most important cereal crops in the world. Also, it ranks the third of the world cereal crops which surpassed by wheat and rice. In the USA maize is considered the king of cereal crops. In Egypt, Maize is essential for human and livestocks consumption as an available source of carbohydrate, oil and slightly for protein. It is required for several industrial purposes such as starch and oil. World average cultivated area of maize reached 385.289 million feddan(feddan = 4200 m2) in 2010; the total production was 844.358 million tons, with an average productivity of 2,191.5 kg grain per feddan. The growing area of maize in Egypt during 2010 year is about 2,305,998 feddan with a total grain yield of 7,041,100 ton. The average grain yield production per feddan was about 3,053.4 kg.

Book excerpt: A broad-base population of corn, Lote-81, was used in this study to derive four sub-populations with lengths for maturation and developmental phases. The study was initiated in an attempt to develop improved maize cultivars to flit into the cropping systems of Pakistan and to determine the effects of modified devlopmental periods on yield and yield components. The material was evaluated at four locations, two in Pakistan and two in Mexico. Genotypic selection for varying lengths of developmental stages, was successful and produced populations significantly different for vegetative and reproductive durations. The late flowering groups required significantly more days to mid-silk than the early flowering groups. Similarly reproductive or grain filling durations also differed for two classes of early and late black layer formation. Increased plant and ear heights were observed for the late flowering groups. The grain filling duration did not influence plant or ear height. Moreover, the late flowering groups indicated higher levels of tolerance to stalk rot disease under artificaial inoculation condition. late flowering was also associated with longer lag phase duration. The groups with longer grain filling duration showed consistently higher moisture content during the entire grain grwth period. The early balck layer genotypes lost moisture at more rapid rates than groups with longer grain filling duration. The different maturity classes differed for their moisture contents at physiological maturity. The grain (...).
