Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this exploratory case study was to describe single-parent associate degree nursing students' reports of the social supports that buffered their college-related stress and fostered their academic success. The study was designed to elicit participants' descriptions of the stressors experienced as a result of being a single-parent community college nursing student and the types and sources of support that were helpful in buffering their college-related stress and fostering their academic success. The conceptual framework used in this case study was House's (1981) model of social support. According to House, social support is defined as "a flow of emotional concern, instrumental aid, information, and/or appraisal between people" (p. 26). The concept of social support addresses the question: "Who gives what to whom regarding which problems?" (p. 22). Crucially, support was found "to be effective only to the extent it is perceived" (p. 72). A two-method approach was used to collect data to help answer the research questions. Study volunteers were asked to complete a paper-and-pencil survey and to participant in an in-person interview. Eleven single-parent associate degree nursing students, from four colleges that are part of a state-wide community college nursing program, participated in the study. Procedures associated with quantitative and qualitative research were used to analyze the data, which consisted of survey responses and verbatim transcripts of in-person interviews. This yielded 40 findings. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations for practice and future research were presented. Survey and interview data indicated the most commonly reported source of stress for all participants was balancing coursework with personal responsibilities, confirming prior research findings that single-parent college students experience stressors related to balancing academic responsibilities with personal and job demands. Regarding types and sources of social support, all study participants reported that they had received emotional, instrumental, informational, and appraisal supports that buffered their college-related stress and fostered their academic success. The primary sources of emotional support were classmates, friends, family members, and professors. Instrumental support was provided mainly by their colleges but also by the state and family members. The primary sources of informational support were classmates, family members, and professors. Of note, family members and professors were identified as a source of appraisal support by only five study participants.

Book excerpt: Abstract : Using Wylie's (2004) Model of Non-Traditional Student Attrition as the theoretical framework, results of the analysis revealed student- and nursing-program-related factors that facilitate or hinder successful completion of the program. Barriers of completion included (a) amount and difficulty of course requirements, (b) difficult test rubrics, (c) ineffective instructors, (d) full-time teaching, (e) difficulty in balancing work, family, and school responsibilities, (f) language barriers, and (g) separation of work and school environment. Results of the study further showed that resolution of students' personal obstacles hindering program completion included (a) time and financial management, (b) establishing good relationships with instructors, and (c) use of student support services. While there is a plethora of extensive studies that have developed theories to explain students' early departure from nursing programs, there are only limited studies conducted with respect to nurse programs' retention or attrition in terms of the factors that lead to success in nursing programs. This current study investigated the lived experiences of students currently enrolled in an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program as well as those who have dropped out of the program at a Midwest community college. Data were collected from 13 participants who participated in the semi-structured interview and were analyzed through a modified Moustakas (1994) van Kaam method. Results can be utilized by educational institutions to create ways to eliminate these barriers. Colleges might be more willing to provide additional student support during enrollment if the external factors that help students achieve success could be identified.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this descriptive, correlational study was to explore the daily stress that affects Associate Degree nursing students and examine how this stress may affect academic performance. The research was guided by Roy's Adaptation Model, using stress as the stimulus and performance as adaptation. The study was comprised of a convenience sample of 114 Associate Degree nursing students in a private university in the southeastern United States. Data were collected using the Hassles and Uplifts Scale (Lazarus & Folkman 1987) and a researcher-designed demographic tool during the first week of second semester. Top ten hassles, top ten uplifts, top ten combined hassles, and top ten combined uplifts were tabulated and correlations were found between the student's academic grade and many of the items on the top tens.

Book excerpt: To address the healthcare needs of vulnerable populations, nursing educators should evaluate educational preparedness and identify which factors influence a successive academic trajectory in nursing school. A prospective design was used to determine the relationships and differences among the anatomy and physiology course grade, self-efficacy, linguistic diversity, language acculturation, and components of the National League for Nursing pre-admission exam for registered nurses and first semester nursing course grades of linguistically diverse and native English speaking associate degree nursing students. A relationship exists between the PAX-RN composite score, anatomy mean grade, language diversity, and general self-efficacy score, the Nursing Pharmacology and Nursing Fundamentals course grades for associate degree nursing students. The PAX-RN composite score and the AP mean grade were related to all first semester courses for associate degree students. Differences existed in the academic success of linguistically diverse students and Native English speaking students on the PAX-RN composite scores and Nursing Fundamentals course grades. Students may approach prerequisite courses and preadmission exams differently if the predictive nature of these factors were addressed. Nurse educators can further explore essential admission criteria which may be necessary for academic success among all students, inclusive of diverse populations.
