Book Synopsis Fundamentals of Ocean Acoustics by : L.M. Brekhovskikh
Download or read book Fundamentals of Ocean Acoustics written by L.M. Brekhovskikh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-10 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date introduction to the theory of sound propagation in the ocean. The text treats both ray and wave propagation and pays considerable attention to stochastic problems such as the scattering of sound at rough surfaces and random inhomogeneities. An introductory chapter that discusses the basic experimental data complements the following theoretical chapters. New material has been added throughout for this third edition. New topics covered include: - inter-thermocline lenses and their effect on sound fields - weakly divergent bundles of rays - ocean acoustic tomography - coupled modes - sound scattering by anisotropic volume inhomogeneities with fractal spectra - Voronovich's approach to sound scattering from the rough sea surface. In addition, the list of references has been brought up to date and the latest experimental data have been included.

Book Synopsis Acoustic Scattering from a Stochastic Sea Surface by : Louis L. Scharf
Download or read book Acoustic Scattering from a Stochastic Sea Surface written by Louis L. Scharf and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spectral and covariance properties of surface-scattered acoustic fields are determined for slightly rough and very rough sea surfaces that are irradiated with far-field, single frequency sources. The results obtained are general in the sense that they depend only on the frequency-wavenumber spectrum of the stochastic sea surface and not on any particular surface spectrum. Exact results are obtained for sinusoidal seas and these results are compared with various approximate solutions. The approximations clearly indicate the connection between sinusoidal seas. (Author).

Book Synopsis Acoustic Scattering from Composite Wind-Wave Surfaces II: Backscatter Cross Sections and Doppler Effects at High Frequencies and Small Angles for 'Bubble-Free' Regimes by : David Middleton
Download or read book Acoustic Scattering from Composite Wind-Wave Surfaces II: Backscatter Cross Sections and Doppler Effects at High Frequencies and Small Angles for 'Bubble-Free' Regimes written by David Middleton and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study continues the investigation of the author embodied in NUSC Technical Document TD-78205. Here we are again concerned with underwater acoustic scattering from the random moving wind-wave surface of the ocean. In particular, we are concerned with high frequency O(5-20 kHz), small grazing angle configurations O(5-25), and near-surface as well as volume regimes which are bubble-free vis-a-vis surface effects. Our efforts here are specifically directed to the calculation of doppler shift an doppler spread produced by the wind-driven ocean surface. Included also is a summary of a more complete model of the soliton scattering mechanism originally postulated and described. This more complete model is based on recent work of Middleton and Mellen.

Book Synopsis The Interaction of Ocean Waves and Wind by : Peter Janssen
Download or read book The Interaction of Ocean Waves and Wind written by Peter Janssen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-28 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was published in 2004. The Interaction of Ocean Waves and Wind describes in detail the two-way interaction between wind and ocean waves and shows how ocean waves affect weather forecasting on timescales of 5 to 90 days. Winds generate ocean waves, but at the same time airflow is modified due to the loss of energy and momentum to the waves; thus, momentum loss from the atmosphere to the ocean depends on the state of the waves. This volume discusses ocean wave evolution according to the energy balance equation. An extensive overview of nonlinear transfer is given, and as a by-product the role of four-wave interactions in the generation of extreme events, such as freak waves, is discussed. Effects on ocean circulation are described. Coupled ocean-wave, atmosphere modelling gives improved weather and wave forecasts. This volume will interest ocean wave modellers, physicists and applied mathematicians, and engineers interested in shipping and coastal protection.
