Book Synopsis Effect of Missile Nose Length and Shape on Fin Effectiveness by : Donald V. Rubin
Download or read book Effect of Missile Nose Length and Shape on Fin Effectiveness written by Donald V. Rubin and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wind tunnel investigation of the effect of missile nose length and shape on fin aerodynamics was conducted using four nose configurations in combination with five fin configurations. The distance between the nose and the fins was varied by using two body spacers. Total model length varied from 8.5 to 13.5 calibers. The tests were conducted at Mach numbers from 1.75 to 4.5 at an angle of attack range of -4 to 16 degrees. The effects of nose length and shape on missile normal force, center of pressure, and axial force are shown. (Author).

Book Synopsis Numerical Investigation of Aerodynamics of Canard-controlled Missile Using Planar and Grid Tail Fins by : James DeSpirito
Download or read book Numerical Investigation of Aerodynamics of Canard-controlled Missile Using Planar and Grid Tail Fins written by James DeSpirito and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viscous computational fluid dynamic simulations were used to predict the aerodynamic coefficients and flow field around a canard-controlled missile in subsonic and transonic flow. Computations were performed at Mach 0.6 and 0.9, six angles of attack between 0 deg and 10 deg, and with planar and grid tail fins. The computations were validated with wind tunnel data. Flow visualizations showed that the canard downwash produced a low-pressure region on the starboard side of the missile that produced a large induced side force. The canard trailing vortices interacted with the tail fins until alpha> 8 deg, producing a pressure differential on the leeward tail fin, leading to the adverse induced roll effects. Visualizations of the flow through the grid fin structure showed choking of the flow at Mach 0.9 and Mach 1.5. The validated simulations results showed that grid fins did not improve the canard roll-control effectiveness at subsonic and transonic speeds as well as they did at the low supersonic speed.
Book Synopsis Normal Force Effectiveness of Several Fin Planforms with Streamwise Gaps at Mach Numbers of 0.8 to 5.0 by : C. W. Dahlke
Download or read book Normal Force Effectiveness of Several Fin Planforms with Streamwise Gaps at Mach Numbers of 0.8 to 5.0 written by C. W. Dahlke and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report contains the results and analysis of a series of wind-tunnel tests for several rectangular and one delta fin planform with streamwise gaps between the fin root chord and body. The tests were conducted at free-stream Mach numbers from 0.8 to 1.5 with fin to body gap variation of 0.00 to 0.25 body diameter. The normal force effectiveness for the fin-gap configuration is presented as normal force coefficient slopes at zero angle of attack. Small gaps are shown to cause significant loss in fin effectiveness especially at transonic Mach numbers. (Author).

Book Synopsis Missile Aerodynamics by : Jack Norman Nielsen
Download or read book Missile Aerodynamics written by Jack Norman Nielsen and published by AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics). This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The similarities between the airplane and the missile extend beyond their flying capabilities, and at higher operational speeds, the configuration distinctions become even less apparent. " Missile Aerodynamics," a classic now available from AIAA and Nielsen Engineering and Research, Inc., combines the best of missile and airplane aerodynamics, drawing extensively from numerous technical papers to present a rational and unified account of the principles behind missile projection. Evaluate the missile versus the airplane in a multitude of areas, from longitudinal acceleration, wing loading, roll and dynamic stability, guidance and navigation, and more. J.N. Nielsen covers every aspect of missile aerodynamics, from the classification of missiles and basic formulas to innovative aerodynamic controls. In one reliable reference, readers will find hundreds of schematics, equations, and tables with practical applications in missile design and engineering. Download or read book Preliminary Design Aerodynamic Prediction Methodology for Missiles with Nose Bluntness written by Charles W. Ingram and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A semi-empirical methodology is presented for predicting the axial and normal force coefficients and the center of pressure to include nose bluntness effects for missiles. This methodology includes the transonic and supersonic Mach number regime with angles of attack from 0 to 180 degrees. This methodology correlates well with wind tunnel test data. (Author).
