Crack-opening displacement measurements were taken during the fatigue crack propagation tests so that the effects of crack-opening loads and residual stresses could be determined. The use of the concept of Elber's effective stress intensity range, based on the measurements of crack-opening loads, indicates that the crack propagation rates are equivalent in the weld metal, heat-affected zone, and base metal. Furthermore, the effect of stress ratio also can be correlated using the effective stress intensity range concept.

It was observed that the fracture mechanism of low-cycle fatigue involves Stage II fatigue crack growth which is characterized by the development of ductile striations and two essential types of secondary fracture surfaces. It is shown that ductile fatigue crack growth, which involves two types of ductile striations, is governed by the local irreversible plastic deformation at the crack tip in both alloys. The most important mode of secondary crack growth in 2024-T4 aluminum is the brittle fracture or decohension of the constituent particles ahead of the crack tip and the subsequent growth of the interior cracks toward the main crack. The size of the plastic zone at the crack tip appears to determine the degree of influence of this mode of fracture on overall crack growth rate. In 7075-T6, the dominant mode of secondary crack growth is the quasi-cleavage fracture of the matrix. The frequency of occurrence of these two modes of secondary crack growth increases with the stress ratio, i.e., with increasing mean stress. The change in the modes of crack growth as we change from low to high mean stress contributes to the relative differences in fatigue strength of the two materials at various stress ratios.

Book excerpt: The environmental fatigue crack propagation in 2024-T3, 7075-T6, and 7178-T6 was studied at low levels of cyclic amplitude of stress intensity, delta K. Both wedge force loading and remote loading techniques were employed to achieve the desired delta K levels, and preliminary experiments were designed to test their compatibility. Testing was carried out in humid air, distilled water, and 3.5% sodium chloride solution, and the observed crack growth rates compared with those in desiccated air. Later studies were also conducted in an inert reference environment with a total water content of less than 2 ppm. When the data are plotted as log delta K versus log d2a/dN, alloy 2024-T3 exhibits a marked slope transition, alloy 7075-T6 a slight slope transition, and alloy 7178-T6 a rectilinear behavior throughout the whole range of delta K studied. The basic shape of these curves is discussed in terms of state-of-stress conditions at the crack tip, frequency effects, environmental effects, strain rate sensitivity, and metallurgical structure. An attempt is also made to correlate the rate of fatigue crack propagation in a particular environment and at a particular delta K level with the fracture topography. (Author).

A conservative view of the fog resistance of metals and alloys is developed which allows the identification of the minimum fatigue threshold and maximum fog rates that can be experienced for a particular set of test conditions.
