Book excerpt: Five hundred and forty day-old broiler breeder females were used to study the effects of three lighting and three feeding regimens during the brooding and rearing periods on adult performance of two strains of broiler breeder females. Feeding program significantly affected body weight from 8 to 23 weeks of age. Feeding program during the rearing period did not affect body weight at 40 weeks of age. Light schedules had no effect on body weight during the rearing or reproductive periods. Strain X gained significantly more body weight from 2 to 18 weeks of age than strain Y. Strain Y exhibited compensatory growth during the reproductive period. The birds fed 115% of control feed had significantly better survivability than the control and the underfed groups to 23 weeks of age. There was no evidence of feeding program x strain or lighting schedule x strain interactions for percent mortality in this study. Rearing feeding program had no effect on mean age at sexual maturity. The birds reached sexual maturity, 50% production, and peak production at the ages recommended by the foundation breeders. Rearing lighting program significantly influenced sexual maturity of the hens. Strain Y reached 50% production at an earlier age than strain X; and also laid an average of 8 eggs more than strain X during the four periods of production. The control group had significantly lower percent fertility than either the 85% or 115% groups. There was no lighting program x strain, or feeding program x strain interaction effects observed among the treatments. Both lighting schedule and feeding program significantly influenced percent hatch of fertile eggs. Neither the rearing feeding program nor the rearing lighting schedules significantly influenced adult mortality. Rearing feeding program significantly affected the weight of the digestive organs and the fat-pads. Light schedules, feeding program, and strain significantly affected organ weights. There were no feed by light, light by strain, or feed by light by strain interactions affecting organ weight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As managing body weight is key to optimize reproduction in broiler breeders, precision feeding systems are being developed. However, to be economically viable such systems require continuous access, hence, continuous illumination. Thus, this study investigated the impact of 24-hour supplemental feeder light spectrum on pullet growth and adult production. Furthermore, the effect of spectrum daytime lights and its interaction with supplemental light were determined. Exposure of broiler breeder hens to continuous red supplemental light delayed sexual maturity resulting in lower egg production and heavier body weight at onset of lay, while supplemental green light had no negative impact. No obvious effect of daytime light spectrum was observed, however, its significant interaction with supplemental light spectrum on egg production indicates potential synergistic effect. In conclusion, the use of continuous red supplemental light is strongly discouraged, and supplemental green light appears to be the best candidate to continuously illuminate precision feeding systems.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of all aspects of commercial production systems, this book provides an up-to-date look at all aspects of broiler breeder production and management, starting with specialized genetic programs as developed by the primary breeders and ending with two chapters on very practical, hands-on aspects of breeder management, including extensive coverage of health management, feeding systems, environmental control, lighting programs and all aspects of male and female reproduction. Recognizing the diversity of management systems worldwide, the authors have included breeders in both temperate and warm climates and also for controlled environment vs.curtain-sided housing systems. This unique publication is an essential reference for all professionals involved in broiler breeder production.

Book excerpt: Domestication of vertebrates is based on the understanding of the needs of animals in their natural environment. Thus the success of this domestication throughout human history is largely dependant of the knowledge of the animal feeding behaviour. The aim of this volume is to provide advanced students and researchers with a review of current knowledge of feeding in domestic mammals and birds. The book also presents chapters on feeding behaviour in particular species; the scope is wide, covering not only ruminants, poultry and pigs, but also more specifically horses, rabbits and ostrich. Contributors include leading research workers from Europe, USA, Australia and South Africa.

Book excerpt: Commercial Chicken Meat and Egg Production is the 5th edition of a highly successful book first authored by Dr. Mack O. North in 1972, updated in 1978 and 1984. The 4th edition was co-authored with Donald D. Bell in 1990. The book has achieved international success as a reference for students and commercial poultry and egg producers in every major poultry producing country in the world. The 5th edition is essential reading for students preparing to enter the poultry industry, for owners and managers of existing poultry companies and for scientists who need a major source of scientifically based material on poultry management. In earlier editions, the authors emphasized the chicken and its management. The 5th edition, with the emphasis shifted to the commercial business of managing poultry, contains over 75% new material. The contributions of 14 new authors make this new edition the most comprehensive such book available. Since extensive references are made to the international aspects of poultry management, all data are presented in both the Imperial and Metric form. Over 300 tables and 250 photos and figures support 62 chapters of text. New areas include processing of poultry and eggs with thorough discussions of food safety and further processing. The business of maintaining poultry is discussed in chapters on economics, model production firms, the use of computers, and record keeping. Updated topics include: breeders and hatchery operations; broiler and layer flock management; replacement programs and management of replacements; nutrition; and flock health. New chapters address flock behavior, ventilation, waste management, egg quality and egg breakage. Other new features include a list of more than 400 references and a Master List of the tables, figures, manufacturers of equipment and supplies, research institutions, books and periodicals, breeders, and trade associations. Commercial growers will find the tables of data of particular interest; scientists will be able to utilize the extensive references and to relate their areas of interest to the commercial industry's applications; and students will find that the division of the book into 11 distinct sections, with multiple chapters in each, will make the text especially useful.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT EFFECTS OF DAYTIME AND SUPPLEMENTAL LIGHT SPECTRUM ON BROILER BREEDER GROWTH AND SEXUAL MATURATION Adriana Rodriguez Advisor: University of Guelph, 2017 Professor G.Y. Bédécarrats As body weight is critical for successful reproduction in broiler breeders, a precision feeding system was developed to automatically allocate feed to individuals based on real-time measurements. However, to be commercially applicable it requires continuous illumination and, since green and red lights have been shown to stimulate growth and reproduction, respectively, this study aimed at determining which wavelength and intensity could be provided as feeder supplemental lighting without negatively impacting production. Furthermore, the interactions between daytime and supplemental light spectrums were investigated. Results show green daytime light promoted early growth and hens under red daytime light produced more eggs during early lay. Supplemental red light triggered a delay in sexual maturation in an intensity dependent manner which resulted in heavier hens at first egg. In conclusion, constant red supplemental light should not be used for broiler breeder precision feeding systems while a red daytime light may promote early egg production.
