Book excerpt: The effects of global warming, climate change, and land use changes on catchment water balance and water quality have become the main concern in catchment water management in recent years. Due to rapid population growth upon dam construction, the Taleghan catchment in Iran has undergone rapid land use changes, urbanization, and water resource development for agriculture, industry, and domestic water supply. These changes could potentially cause devastating effects on both water balance and water quality in the catchment. However, there is no known study being conducted to predict the effect of land use changes on water balance and water quality in this area. Therefore there is a need for a physically-based and computationally efficient distributed hydrological model with a simple GIS interface to evaluate the effects of land use changes in Taleghan catchment. The main objective of this research was to examine the effect of land use changes on water balance and suspended sediment yield of the Taleghan catchment in northwest Iran. From a review of various models, a semi-distributed model, Soil and Water Assessment Tools (SWAT) was selected for this study. The model was applied to the study area and its performance for predicting runoff was evaluated. Two popular programs that are linked into SWAT namely SUFI2 and ParaSol were applied for calibration and validation purposes, respectively. Comparing the water balance between Joestan (upper part) and Galinak (outlet) stations showed evapotranspiration losses were around 38% and 49% of the precipitation, respectively. Surface runoff was 21% of the precipitation for the upper part of the catchment and 33% at the outlet. Groundwater and lateral flows took place mostly in the mountainous upper part of the catchment. The results of annual suspended sediment yield showed that more sedimentation took place upstream of Galinak with 7.3 t/ha but 5.8 t/ha at Joestan. The water balance at the outlet was predicted for the period between January 1995 and August 2004. The results shows 2.4% increase in surface runoff and 2.04% decrease of interflows. These results indicate the sediment yield increased from 7.3 t/ha to 8.3 t/ha at the outlet during the study period with progressively ascending surface runoff and suspended sediment yield and progressively descending interflows. Sediment yield predictions were compared to the seven land use scenarios. The maximum increase in sediment yields compared to the last observed land use (2007) was 1.6 t/ha (19%) for scenario 7 (all rangeland is bare). Scenario 2 (rangeland to agriculture, 0-20%) and scenario 6 (rangeland to the bare, 0-40%) showed increase of 4% and 12%, respectively. Scenario3 (agriculture to urban 0-20% slope), scenario 4 (agriculture to the urban, 0-40% slope), and scenario 5 (rangeland to the urban, 0-20% slope) showed decreases in sediment yields of 2.5%, 5.7% and 1.2%, respectively. The land use changes in the seven scenarios had varying effects on the water components in relation to slope steepness. These land use scenarios showed increase of 4%, 5.2%, 7.5%, 8%, 10%, and 15% in surface runoff and decrease of 8.7%, 10%, 12.7%, 30%, 31%, and 45% in groundwater flow for scenarios 2, 3,4,5,6, and 7, respectively. This research has successfully developed a customized SWAT model useful for water engineers and managers in their planning of future land developments of the Taleghan catchment. The database system of the Taleghan catchment, using dispersed datasets in GIS environment could be used not only for modeling purposes but also for decision making. The information on soil erosion sensitivity of a particular area in the catchment will be useful for the government planning of soil and water conservation control measure, such that priority actions on sediment control and restoration budget will be allocated where it is most required. The study has produced a technique with reliable capability and high accuracy for annual and monthly water balance components and suspended sediment yield over different slope classes of the Taleghan catchment. This can pave the way for similar studies in other catchments with the same climatic conditions.

The goal is to identify what processes, climatic or not, account for the changes in local sediment yield and erosion budget. Weixi basin has an average annual sediment yield of 175 ton/km2 with two anomalously large peaks in 1979 and 1984. Precipitation is moderately correlated with sediment yield at interannual scale. It also affects seasonal fluctuations in sediment yield as major sediment loading events correspond to spring snowmelt and monsoon rainfall. However, there is no long-term trend in precipitation that could explain the peak in sediment yield. Land use/land cover classification shows an average of 22.8% bare land in Weixi basin, but no definitive conclusion about temporal changes could be drawn yet due to the discrepancy in imagery resolution. Short-lived radionuclide analyses show there is no correlation between upstream land use and depth of erosion, whereas slope is a moderate control for erosion depth.

Slightly and moderately salt-affected soils are mostly found on the piedmonts at the foot of the Elburz (Alborz) Mountains in the northern part of the country. The soils having severe to extreme salinity are predominantly located in the Central Plateau, the Khuzestan and Southern Coastal Plains and the Caspian Coastal Plain. The process of salinization of the surface water resources is mainly due to natural conditions, and to a lesser extent, to the discharge of drainage water into the river systems. Estimates show that about 6.7 km3 of brackish water flow annually through 12 major rivers. There is no straightforward solution to the complex problems of salt-induced soil and water resources degradation in Iran. The approaches addressing the management of these resources need to be multidimensional and must take into account biophysical and environmental conditions of the target areas as well as livelihood aspects of the associated communities.

These changes also affect how sediment moves across the landscape and through watersheds. In this dissertation, I examine how land use changes and climate change both affect the movement of water and sediment through watersheds in the Great Lakes Basin.Extreme cases of land use change, such as the logging and forest fires that affected large swaths of the Great Lakes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, can greatly increase both streamflow and sediment transport. Chapter 1 utilizes the process-based Landscape Hydrologic Model (LHM) to examine the hydrologic effects of land use change from the forested pre-settlement condition to clearcut, burned, and modern land uses in the northwestern corner of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. I show that extensive fires could have increased streamflow by 160% relative to the virgin forest landscape and 96% relative to the logged scenario. Chapter 2 focuses on modeling of the Jordan River watershed, showing that logging may have increased sediment transport in the river by up to 34% compared to pre-settlement conditions and a watershed-wide fire could have increased the sediment transport capacity by as much as 166% above the pre-settlement levels. A reach-based sediment budgeting tool, the Sediment Impact Assessment Methods (SIAM), highlights the possibility of complex system responses to land use change over time.Chapter 3 explores the potential impacts of climate change on sediment yield and dredging costs in the adjacent Maumee and St. Joseph River watersheds where I project that dredging costs may change in opposite directions (−8 to −16% in the St. Joseph but +1 to +6% in the Maumee). This difference between the two watersheds is driven by differences in the proportion of farmland and assumptions about how farmers will respond to a changing climate. I also show that there is a large variation in sediment yield and sediment discharge predictions because of the differences among the various Global Climate Model (GCM) projections.Rather than downscale and run all of the GCM projections, many researchers average a subset of the projections together and use the ensembled climate data as the input to hydrologic models. Excess sediment and nutrient loading are major water quality concerns for streams and receiving waters. Previous work has established that in addition to surface and road erosion, streambank erosion and failure are primary mechanisms that mobilize sediment and nutrients from the landscape. This mechanism and other hydrological processes driving sediment and nutrient transport are likely to be highly influenced by anticipated changes in climate, particularly extreme precipitation and flow events. This research has two primary goals: to develop a physics-based watershed model with more inclusive representation of sediment by including simulation of streambank erosion and geotechnical failure; and to investigate the impacts of climate change on unstable streams and suspended sediment mobilization by overland erosion, erosion of roads, and the erosion as well as failure of streambanks. This advances mechanistic simulation of suspended sediment mobilization and transport from watersheds, which is particularly valuable for investigating the impacts of climate and land use changes, as well as extreme events. Model development involved coupling two existing physics-based models: the Bank Stability and Toe Erosion Model (BSTEM) and the Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Model (DHSVM). This approach simulates streambank erosion and failure in a spatially explicit environment. The coupled model is applied to the Mad River watershed in central Vermont as a test case. I then use the calibrated Mad River model to predict the response in watershed sediment loading to future climate scenarios that specifically represent local temperature and precipitation trends for the northeastern US, particularly changing trends in the frequency and magnitude of extreme precipitation. Overall the streambank erosion and failure processes are captured in the coupled model approach. Although the presented calibration of the model underestimates suspended sediment concentrations resulting from relatively small storm/flow events, it still improves prediction of cumulative loads and in some cases suspended sediment concentrations during elevated flow events in comparison to model results without including BSTEM. Increases in temperature affect the timing and magnitude of snow melt and spring flows, as well as associated sediment mobilization, in the watershed. Increases in annual precipitation and in extreme precipitation events produce increases in annual as well as peak discharge and sediment loads in the watershed. This research adds to the body of evidence indicating that streambank erosion and failure can be a major source of suspended sediment, and thereby a major source of phosphorus as well. It also shows that local climate trends in the Northeast are likely to result in higher peak discharges and sediment yields from meso-scale, high-gradient watersheds that encompass headwater forested streams and agricultural floodplains. One limitation was that we could not drive the model with meteorological data that represented changes in both temperature and precipitation, highlighting the need for improved climate predictions. This coupled model approach could be parameterized for alternative watersheds and be re-applied to answer various questions related to erosion processes and sediment transport in a watershed. These findings have important implications for resource allocation and targeted watershed management strategies.
