Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2022 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Leadership, grade: Excellent, , language: English, abstract: In this dissertation, the main objective of the study is to access the effect of human resource management practices (recruitment and selection, training and development, employee satisfaction, employee relations and performance appraisal) on the performance of Cooperative Bank of Oromia. Human resource management (HRM) is a comprehensive and logical approach to the employment and development of people. It can be regarded as a philosophy about how people should be managed, which is reinforced by a number of theories relating to the behavior of people and organizations. Human resource management is a process of bringing people and organizations together so that the goals of each group are accomplished. This implies HRM is part of the management process, which is concerned with the management of human resources in an organization. HRM tries to secure the best from people by captivating their unreserved cooperation. In this way, it includes systematic planning and control of a network of the necessary organizational processes affecting and involving all organizational members including human resource (HR), planning, job and work design, job analysis, staffing, training and development, achievement evaluation and review, compensation and incentives, employee safety and representation and organizational improvements. A cooperative bank is a business organization which is the proprietorship of its members, who are simultaneously the possessors and the clients of the bank. Cooperative banks are often established by individuals belonging in common interest. According to Gupta & Jain (2012), alike any financial institutions, Cooperative Banks in most parts of the world take deposit and lend money. It also provides financial assistance to the people with slight revenues to safeguard them from the debt deception of the cash lender. Cooperative banks are prescribed and managed on the principal of cooperative, self-help & mutual help. As any financial institutions, in Cooperative Bank of Oromia, proper human resource management is vital for its existence and development. Thus, human resource professionals and the bank’s executives are seen employing different mechanisms to retain their experienced employees. Due to this, the study assessed existing conditions in Cooperative Bank of Oromia how it has been applying human resource management practices that enable to attain best performance.

This book was released on 2004-09-24 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation examines how human resources are managed at selected Ethiopian private companies, how Ethiopian human resource management practice is evolving and how it can be improved. The examination is qualitative and exploratory, since no comparative research on human resource management has yet been conducted at Ethiopian profit or non-profit organizations. An understanding of Ethiopian human resource management practice makes it possible to improve Ethiopian human resource management practice, and thus to increase employee productivity. The study took place at four manufacturing and four service companies in Addis Ababa, all representative of their sector. The research claim is that Ethiopian human resource management practices differ from human resource management practices in the West, due to differences in cultural factors, economic systems, political systems, and legal and industrial relations. For this reason, Ethiopia s culture, politics, economy and legal and industrial relations have been analyzed. The main finding of this study is that the importance of human resource management is not uniformly understood at all the case-study companies. Although the multinational companies based in Ethiopia see their human resources as the companies most important asset, as human capital, the local companies generally do not. The fact that respondents claim that Ethiopia has limited experience in industrialization might explain why human resource management in Ethiopia is rudimentary and still has a long way to go. With this dissertation the researcher wants to contribute to improving Ethiopian human resource management practice. Moreover, this dissertation may be used as a framework for similar research in other sectors or for more specific in-depth research. This dissertation may also serve as a knowledge base for company managers, business consultants, academics and government officials of countries with a national culture similar to Ethiopia s (for example Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia), countries undergoing (or which have undergone) a recent transition to a free market economy, and countries facing similar macro-economic developments.

Book excerpt: Rural producer organizations (RPOs), such as farmers' organizations or rural cooperatives, offer a means for smallholder farmers in developing countries to sell their crops commercially. RPOs hold particular promise for Sub-Saharan Africa, where small-scale farming is the primary livelihood but commercialization of food crops is very limited. Using the experience of smallholders in Ethiopia as a case study, this research monograph identifies the benefits of RPOs for small farmers, as well as the conditions under which such organizations most successfully promote smallholder commercialization. The evidence from Ethiopia indicates that RPOs do increase farmers' profits from crop sales, but that the beneficiaries do not tend to be the poorest smallholders. Moreover, an RPO's marketing effectiveness is precarious: it can easily diminish if the number or diversity of its members increases or if it provides more non-marketing services. The authors conclude that RPOs have a role to play in the agricultural development of Sub-Saharan Africa, but that role should be complemented by other programs that directly target the poorest farmers. Further, the effectiveness of RPOs should be preserved by allowing them to follow their own agendas rather than being encouraged to take on non-marketing activities. The assessment of RPOs presented in this monograph should be a valuable resource for policymakers and researchers concerned with economic development and poverty reduction in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, , course: Business Adminstration, language: English, abstract: The main objective of the thesis is to assess the effect of credit risk management on the quality of loans portfolio in the case of Development Bank of Ethiopia. A sample of 84 respondents was drawn from the employees of the Development Bank of Ethiopia by using purposive sampling technique. Both primary and secondary data were used. Data related to loan portfolio and loan position is obtained from the bank whereas, primary data are collected using structured questioners from the employees of the bank. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to conduct the research and Multiple Regression Analysis was run using SPSS Version 21.0 to analyze the data. With regard to credit risk management practices, the result show that DBE has not satisfactory risk Management practice. Precisely, using score 1 (poor) to 5 (best), all the parameters of risk management practice assessment have a score value below 3.40, i.e. Credit Risk Granting and Portfolio Quality Control (3.40), Credit Risk System and Standard (3.20), Credit Risk and Portfolio Quality Control (3.17), Risk Identification, Measurement and Control (3.03), and Risk Environment (2.98). The Bank`s loan portfolio is also more vulnerable to various types of risks, such as to unpredictable risk, predictable, and controllable risks. The bank’s NPL ratio was above 15% for the last five years. The regression result also showed that sound credit granting process and the existence of comprehensive risk management system and standards are the significant variables that affect loan portfolio quality of the Bank. Credit risk management practice of the bank has insignificant effect on loan portfolio quality. Both in terms of Non-performing loan and concentration, DBE has poor loan portfolio quality which is due to the bank’s poor credit risk management practice. Therefore, there is a need to improve and enhance credit risk management practice of the Bank, especially, by improving the credit granting process to have sound credit risk management, and by updating credit risk management system and standards so as to have strong credit management.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 3.5, , language: English, abstract: The general objective of this study is to investigate the impact of income source diversification on financial performance of commercial banks in Ethiopia. Commercial banks in Ethiopia are currently facing competition from non-bank institutions entry into the activities which was in the past only role of banks. Therefore, banks started searching new income sources rather than focusing only traditional inter-mediation income generating activities. Thus, this study was to examine the impact of income sources diversification on bank performance in case of some selected commercial banks in Ethiopia by using panel data over the period 2010-2015. The study used secondary data collected mainly from each sampled banks annual report financial statements. Since the data is secondary in nature, quantitative approach was adopted. This data was analyzed by using STATA version 12 and Microsoft Excel. Fixed effect model was used, since this model is preferred than the random effect model based on the hausman specification test. Return on asset (ROA) was used as dependent variable while income diversification (Div) as independent variable with control variables such as bank size (BS) in terms of total assets, equity/ assets ratio (EAR), loan/asset ratio (LAR) and expense/income ratio (Exp). The findings of the study show that the level of diversification has a positive impact on financial performance of Ethiopian commercial banks. In addition, the study also revealed that EAR, LAR and BS had positive impact on financial performance while Exp had negative impact. The results of the study are important for bankers to understand how income diversification affects the performance of banks. Therefore, the study recommended that banks should diversify their sources of income into interest and non-interest as well as reduce operating expense in effective way, so as to enhance their performance (ROA).

Book excerpt: Case Study from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: -, , course: Business, language: English, abstract: The objective of this study is to show the overall development trends and the challenges encountering the multi-purpose cooperatives (MPCs). To do so, research methodology employed was descriptive, which involved both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. Data were collected from the sample through cross-sectional survey from 210 respondents. Besides, 16 key informants and three FGDs were considered in the assessment. The instruments used were questionnaires, FGDs, in depth interviews, observation and document review. Both probability and non-probability sampling techniques were applied. Data analyses were done using descriptive statistics. The result of the study shows that the average rate of growth of members in sample MPCs is 19% as calculated from 2016-2018 and 79.3% from their formation period. The capital of the sample MPCs increased from 305,081 to 9.3 million and their profit was nearly 1.5 million ETB. Of the multifaceted services they provide, marketing agricultural inputs accounts for the great proportions. In general, the sample MPCs are contributing somewhat to the economic development of the MPCs. However, their performance is not as expected due to major problems identified: lack of professional managers, devoted management committees, limited capital base; weak horizontal and vertical linkages, low members’ participation, insufficient dividend, lack of diversified activities; limited awareness, inadequate infrastructure, low stakeholders’ participation, lack of adequate credit facilities and other necessary technical supports are among hitches to be tackled.
