Book Synopsis Describing and Predicting Temporal Growth and Wood Property Variation in Plantation Eucalypts by : David Michael Drew

This book was released on 2008 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was possible to develop simple statistical models at all sites describing temporal wood property variation, relying only on measurements of stem growth rates, parameters of water availability and temperature. However, since xylem development takes place over extended periods, with unpredictable interactions, a process-based approach to modelling wood property variation is potentially very useful. Accordingly, a new model (CAMBIUM), which incorporates concepts of these processes, is described and tested. This model was written as a software tool and has been designed to predict how wood properties vary from pith-to-bark, which is ultimately an effect of growth and physiological processes integrated into the wood over time. This uses as inputs simulations from an existing process-based model of stand development (CABALA) but can potentially be used with measured data or simulations from any similar model of forest stand growth and development. The model provided reasonable estimates of temporal fibre anatomical and wood density variation at the three research sites, predicting between 50% and 65% of the variation in monthly averaged wood density in most cases. However, it did exhibit certain weaknesses, particularly in regard to vessel development, which are discussed. A set of parameters, a large number of which can be considered to have physiological significance, is described for the two species and the two clones studied as part of the thesis.
Book Synopsis Effects Of Potassium/Sodium Fertilization And Water Availability On Wood Properties Of Eucalyptus Grandis Trees by : Gilles Chaix

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Brazil, most Eucalyptus plantations are located in regions experiencing periods of water shortage where fertilizers such as potassium (K) are intensively used to achieve high productivity. Recently, sodium (Na) has also been considered a potential nutrient. As well as tree growth, wood properties are also an important factor to consider in order to measure the impacts of silvicultural practices and water deficit on forest productivity, since they are determinants for quality and yield of pulp and paper. In a split-plot experimental design with four and six-year-old Eucalyptus grandis trees, located in Su00e3o Paulo State, Brazil, we evaluate the effects of K and Na supply compared with a control treatment, under two water supply regimes (37% throughfall reduction versus no throughfall reduction) on stem volume, heartwood proportion, basic density, fiber, and vessel properties.Effects of Na fertilization on wood properties were more pronounced that K fertilization. Na detrimentally affected sapwood:heartwood ratio and wood basic density. However, both the K and Na supply increased stem volume by three and two-fold respectively. The beneficial effects of K and Na on stem volume, even under a water availability reduction, largely compensate for the loss in wood quality for pulp and paper production. Vessels features were responsive to fertilization. These findings predict that under water deficit, wood density and fiber features will not decline in commercial Eucalyptus grandis plantations fertilized with potassium. The use of sodium, as a substitute for potassium, should consider their negative impacts on wood density.

Book excerpt: Eucalyptus, a genus of over 800 species, is a multiproduct crop par excellence. Not only is it grown for timber, pulp and fuelwood, but, as the Aborigines discovered thousands of years ago, it has numerous medicinal and aromatic properties. Since the first commercial distillation of eucalyptus oil 150 years ago, a vast array of eucalyptus-based pro
