It also encompasses growth and yield data from published sources, as well as collected from sites under smallholder industrial plantations in Binh Dinh and Phu Tho provinces, Vietnam. This manual is 1 of 5 that guide smallholder tree planting of five selected tree species in Vietnam. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dominant trees of Australia, eucalypts make up a remarkable genus. This authoritative volume provides current reviews by active researchers of many disciplines, including evolutionary history, genetics, distribution and modelling, the relationship of eucalypts to fire and nutrients, ecophysiology, pollination and reproductive ecology, interactions between eucalypts and other co-existing biota (including fungi, invertebrates and vertebrates), and conservation and management. Together these reviews shed light on the reasons for the great success of eucalypts in Australian environments, and provide a comprehensive summary for comparison with the ecology of major woody plant genera in other continents. This volume is of particular relevance to Australian ecologists, but also provides a stimulating perspective to students of vegetation ecology in all continents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plantations of a wide range of tree species have assumed an important place in our world, providing wood for industry, fuelwood and animal fodder, protection from adverse environments and for the soil, as well as amenity and aesthetically pleasing landscapes. silvicultural knowledge of this particular branch of forestry first developed in Europe more than two centuries ago but in many parts of the world is still in a process of rapid evolution as more and more plantations are established to meet specific needs. The first exotic tree species to be established in plantations in my own country were planted more than a century ago and, likewise, New Zealand has a long history of planting. Both countries have developed a vigorous and innovative approach to plantation practice, soundly based initially on European experience but gradually modified to meet the challenges of new environments, new markets, and changed economic circumstances. This book on plantation silviculture was begun some years ago when the lack of a suitable undergraduate text for teaching purposes became apparent. The present text is aimed essentially at this audience. Although I have drawn heavily on the experience of Australia and New Zealand, the principles outlined are applicable anywhere in the world where plantations are being grown and tended, from the United States and Scandinavia to India, South Africa or Brazil. The text should also serve as a useful reference to advanced students and practicing foresters, with the reference list providing an introduction to the literature on this subject.

FOREST CULTURE IS ITS RELATIONS TO INDUSTRIAL PURSUITS: _A_ LECTURE, DELIVERED BY Baron Ferd. von Mueller, CM.G., M.D, Ph.D., F.R.S. (Government Botanist for Victoria, sod Director of the Botanic Gardens of Melbourne), On the 33d of June, 1871. Strange as it may appear, an impression seems to be prevailing in these communities that our forests have to serve no other purposes but to provide wood for our immediate and present wants, be it fuel or timber. For even after the warning of climatic changes, and after the commencing scarcity of wood, no forest administration, at least none adequate or regularly organized, has been initiated in any portion of Australia; and thus the forests, even in districts already very populous, remain almost unguarded, become extensively reduced, and in some localities are already annihilated; indeed, the requirements of the current time alone are kept in view. Under such circumstances it cannot be surprising that neither an universal forest supervision, nor a judicious restraint of consumption, nor an ample utilization of all the various collateral resources of our woodlands, received that serious attention to which such measures became more and more entitled. During the earlier years of our colonization, while the population was but thinly scattered over the territory, or densely concentrated in a few places only, all demands on the wood resources were comparatively so limited as to cause, perhaps, nowhere vast destruction of the timber vegetation, much less any alarm for meeting the requirements of the future. Then followed the first gold period, with all its bustle, turmoils and agitations, preventing reflection on almost anything except the immediate wants of that stormy time. Subsequently, when the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of planted forests in tropical and subtropical countries is accelerating to satisfy the ever-growing global demand for wood products. It is expected that within 20 years half of all wood fibre in the world will be sourced from plantations, of which more than half are in the tropics and subtropics. Active community involvement in tree planting as part of rural development is now widespread and welcome. Plantation Forestry in the Tropics provides an overview that sets plantation silviculture in the wider context of development processes and their social, environmental and ecological impacts. The structure and approach of previous editions have been retained but every chapter has been comprehensively revised and updated. Two new chapters, one on clonal forestry, the other on ecological restoration, have been added.

Commercial plantations of eucalypts have been established around the world over a range of climates and soils. These two themes are central to this book. Nutrition of Eucalypts provides a comprehensive survey of nutritional ecology of eucalypts in their natural environment and in plantations. The authors, who are all at the forefront of research and development in their fields, are from the various eucalypt growing regions including Brazil, India, China, Spain and Australia. Their text aims at a state-of-the-art presentation. The book includes a key and descriptions for recognising nutrient deficiencies in eucalypts.
