Book excerpt: The last few years have brought about many changes in the field of marine and freshwater toxins, with advances in analytical technology and the realization that these toxins are a global issue. Offering a complete reference guide, Seafood and Freshwater Toxins: Pharmacology, Physiology, and Detection, Third Edition addresses all aspects of the social and scientific influence of phytotoxins, from legislation and monitoring to new drug development. Covering many new topics, the book examines three main aspects: monitoring of toxins; chemical, mechanistic, and toxicological diversity; and detection technologies. New to this edition: 35 new chapters and 5 updated chapters A focus on state-of-the-art methodology Coverage of new technologies to cultivate algae and to identify, isolate, and quantify toxins Regulatory changes Climate change evidence Expanded information on toxicology Part I of the book includes an overview and reviews general issues related to toxin detection, ecology, and diversity, and effects of climate change. Part II covers impacts of toxins regarding epidemiology, toxicology, economics, and surveillance. Part III explores available detection technologies, such as functional assays, biosensors, mass spectrometry, nanotechnology, and more. In addition, standard reference materials for toxins are discussed. Parts IV to VI provide detailed descriptions of toxin chemical diversity, biological sources, and modes of action. Part VII addresses the use of toxins as starting points for therapeutic drugs for cancer, neurological disorders, and for novel antibiotics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algal Culturing Techniques is a comprehensive reference on all aspects of the isolation and cultivation of marine and freshwater algae, including seaweeds. It is divided into seven parts that cover history, media preparation, isolation and purification techniques, mass culturing techniques, cell counting and growth measurement techniques, and reviews on topics and applications of algal culture techniques for environmental investigations. Algal Culturing Techniques was developed to serve as both a new textbook and key reference for phycologists and others studying aquatic systems, aquaculture and environmental sciences. Students of algal ecology, marine botany, marine phycology, and microbial ecology will enjoy the hands-on methodology for culturing a variety of algae from fresh and marine waters. Researchers in industry, such as aquaculture, pharmaceutical, foodstuffs, and biotechnology companies will find an authoritative and comprehensive reference. Sponsored by the Phycological Society of America Features color photographs and illustrations throughout Describes culturing methods ranging from the test tube to outdoor ponds and coastal seaweed farms Details isolation techniques ranging from traditional micropipette to automated flow cytometeric methods Includes purification, growth, maintenance, and cryopreservation techniques Highlights methods for estimating algal populations, growth rates, isolating and measuring algal pigments, and detecting and culturing algal viruses Features a comprehensive appendix of nearly 50 algal culture medium recipes Includes a glossary of phycological terms

Book excerpt: The book begins with a general introduction and a taxonomic description of the dinoflagellates both to acquaint those unfamiliar with this group of organisms and to set the tone for the rest of the volume. It then addresses the following topics: cell biology (cell cortex, nuclear structure, cell cycle and mitosis, sexual reproduction, cysts and unusual inclusions); biochemistry (physiology and biochemistry, blooms and toxins, and biorhythms); and genetics. In addition, a comprehensive chapter on cell culturing provides the reader with an understanding of the growth conditions and requirements of various dinoflagellates and a simple to follow listing of culture media, all expressed in similar units for ease of comparison. The volume closes with a chapter on evolution which evaluates many of the features of dinoflagellates discussed in the text in terms of evolutionary significance. We hope that this treatise will be of use to research workers and students in the area of dinoflagellate biology and in other areas of biology in which dinoflagellates may be used as a model system for studying various biological problems.

This book was released on 2001 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One challenge in phytoplankton ecology is to measure species-specific physiological responses to changes in environmental conditions. Of importance are species such as the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium fundyense which inhabit coastal regions and are not usually dominant. The aim of this thesis was to identify physiological and behavioral diagnostics of A. fundyense from the Gulf of Maine, and use these indicators to evaluate field populations. Using a surface-specific monoclonal-antibody two methods, flow cytometry and immunomagnetic bead-separation, were developed to identify and separate A. fundyense. Flow-cytometric techniques successfully detected and separated Alexandrium from co-occurring organisms. Using immunomagnetic-separation live A. fundyense cell were separated from spiked field samples and then used to obtain accurate chlorophyll, protein and biomass estimates. Laboratory water columns, nitrogen-(N)-starved batch cultures, and N-limited, semi-continuous cultures, were used to identify indicators of different N-nutritional states. Prolonged N-stress caused dramatic changes intracellular biochemistry, specifically toxin content and composition, however behavioral modifications were not observed. The indicators, specifically toxin ratios of different derivatives, were then used to examine toxin variability in field populations. Toxin compositional changes did occur that were generally consistent with N-stress as the bloom progressed. Overall, these results suggest that these approaches could provide valuable species-specific physiological information.
