The injury is well recognised by medical personnel, coaches and athletes as a major concern causing significant financial costs and lost time from training and matches. The temporal pattern of hamstring injury incidence during matches has shown almost half of all injuries to occur during the latter stages of each half, thus suggesting fatigue as an important contributing factor for injury. This thesis comprises four experimental chapters that examine the effect of multidirectional soccer-specific fatigue on the primary aetiological risk factors and mechanism of injury. This was then used to create and evaluate an injury prevention programme aimed at reducing the risk of hamstring strains in soccer.

Book excerpt: This book presents information regarding changes in lower limb injury risk factors when fatigue is present, and the role of genetics in injury risk in male youth soccer. As many internal risk factors are modifiable, information presented both in the theoretical part of the book and original research studies focuses on the influence of acute, residual and accumulated fatigue on physiological mechanisms are presented to aid sports scientists and coaches to understand the age related effects of fatigue on such factors. This information can help coaches monitor fatigue related responses and be able to create efficient training programmes during important periods of growth and maturation. This will help to enhance performance and reduce injury risk in youth male soccer.

Book excerpt: This innovative book presents the latest insights into hamstring strain injuries (HSI), one of the most common problems in elite and recreational sport, with a unique focus on prevention and rehabilitation. The research within this area has evolved rapidly over the past 10 years and this text offers a comprehensive overview of the recent and most relevant advances. It fills a gap in the literature, since other books focus on muscle injuries in general and their surgical treatment.Structured around the current evidence in the field, it includes sections on functional anatomy and biomechanics; basic muscle physiology in relation to injury and repair; assessment of risk factors; and factors associated with hamstring strains. It also discusses considerations in relation to acute and chronic injuries and hamstring injury prevention, including pre-season and in-season interventions, as well as management strategies and rehabilitation protocols. The final chapter is devoted to additional interventions when conservative rehabilitation and injury prevention fail. Written by renowned experts in the field, this book will be of great interest to sports physiotherapists, sports physicians, physical trainers and coaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Philosophers, social scientists, and laymen have used two perspectives in analyzing social action. One sees man's action as the result of causal forces, and the other sees action as purposive and goal directed. Mathematical treatment of social action has shown this same dichotomy. Some models of behavior describe a causal process, in which there is no place for intention or purpose. Most stochastic models of behavior, whether individual or group, are like this. Another body of work, however, employs purpose, anticipation of some future state, and action designed to maximize the proximity to some goal. Classical microeconomic theory, statistical decision theory, and game theory exemplify this direction. This book examines these two directions of work, and makes original contributions to the second. An introductory chapter outlines these two bodies of work, and casts them in a common frame, to display their similarities and differences. Chapter 2 reviews at length recent work in stochastic processes that makes up the first body of work, which sees social action as the resultant of causal forces. The remaining chapters develop a mathematical framework for the study of systems of social action using a purposive theoretical base. These chapters are designed particularly to contribute to the study of collective decisions, a form of social action that has proved particularly challenging to theoretical analysis. First published in 1973, this became a significant work both in problem solving and in the future career of the author. It is of continuing importance to researchers and students interested in statistical analysis."--Provided by publisher.
