Book excerpt: This thesis examines chromated copper arsenate (CCA) leaching from treated wood exposed to natural rain and laboratory leaching. Lumber specimens were subjected to 685 mm of precipitation during 351 days of exposure. Leaching rates ([mu]g/cm2) of chromium, arsenic, and copper were similar for the three species evaluated (jack pine, black spruce, and southern yellow pine). Application of a water repellent reduced leaching losses by approximately 50%, while a post-fixation pressure washing treatment had mixed effects. Regression analysis revealed that 30% of the variation in chromium and arsenic leaching, and 44% of the variation in copper leaching was explained by sample treatments and climatic variables. A comparison of laboratory leaching methods reveals the need for harmonization of current standards. The American Wood Preservers Association Standard (AWPA E11-97) displayed the highest leaching, followed by the European Standard (EN-84), an independent test, and a method developed by industry. Percent loss from the laboratory leaching standards greatly overestimated leaching from 351 days of above ground exposure. Less than 5 hours of AWPA E11-97 leaching, and less than 21 hours of EN-84 leaching were required to leach the equivalent amount as 351 days of above ground exposure.

This thesis was mainly focused on: (1) Considering the effects of hot water extraction, CCA retention and wood/cement ratio on wood-cement compatibility, by hydration characteristic measurement, x-ray diffractometer (XRD) analysis and strength test. (2) Attempting to increase physical-mechanical properties of cementbonded particleboard (CBPB) made from spent CCA-treated wood, by adding silica fume and adjusting water/cement ratio. (3) Studying the leaching properties of CCA-treated wood-cement composites; finding the origin of leachable CCA components and considering the effect of FeSO4, silica fume, accelerators, water/cement ratio, wood/cement ratio, CCA retention and hydration time on the leaching properties of CCA-treated wood-cement composites. Book excerpt: The burning of wood treated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) preservative produces an ash that contains high concentrations of copper, chromium, and arsenic. The subsequent leaching of these metals from burn sites can produce soil and water contamination. Soils have varying natural abilities to reduce leaching and impact metals speciation and toxicity, by sorption, conversion and sedimentation related mechanisms. Recent regulations have resulted in increased quantities of CCA-treated lumber entering the waste stream, making the study of metals leaching from ash, and the amendment of soils to more effectively immobilize metals, important areas of investigation. The performance of various soil amendments to immobilize or retard Cu, Cr, and As species in soil/CCA-ash mixtures was studied. The amendments evaluated were agricultural lime (CaCO3/MgCO3), soil softener (CaSO4 . 2H2O), and iron sulfate (FeSO4). The evaluation was performed using batch and column leaching studies and pH studies. The control soil used in this study is from the Ultisol soil order, the dominant soil order in the Southeastern U.S. Ultisols form under humid, tropical conditions and are dominated by kaolinitic clay and lesser so by oxides of Fe and Al with a low percentage of organic carbon content. Results of this investigation show that native soil alone retards the mobility of As and Cr and amendments applied alone or in combinations further retard metal mobility compared to the control soil/CCA-ash mixture. The CaSO4 soil amendment is most effective in reducing the rainwater leaching of high concentrations of Cr and As from CCA-ash in soil reducing the mobility by 72% and 77%, respectively, compared to the control soil-ash mixture. Cu mobility at low concentrations relative to Cr and As is increased in the presence of the native soil and by all amendments compared to the CCA-ash alone.
