Book Synopsis Biochemistry, Pathology and Genetics of Pulmonary Emphysema by : J. Bignon
Download or read book Biochemistry, Pathology and Genetics of Pulmonary Emphysema written by J. Bignon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry, Pathology and Genetics of Pulmonary Emphysema documents the proceedings of an international symposium held in Sassari, Italy, 27-30 April 1980. Research on the origins of emphysema has acquired more importance than functional diagnostic studies. There are various hypotheses concerning the development of emphysema. Some cases of emphysema are linked to defects in metabolic functions of the vessels while others are linked to a disturbance in repair processes. The papers in this volume are organized into four sections. Section 1 contains studies on the pathology and biochemistry of lung connective tissue. Section 2 deals with animal models. Section 3 on proteases and antiproteases includes studies on the characteristics and identification of biological specimens, and alpha1-proteinase inhibitor. Section 4 takes up the risk factors and therapeutic approaches for lung disease. Other papers in the volume were presented during two roundtable discussions on the biochemistry of connective tissue components in emphysema and therapeutic approaches.
Book Synopsis Connective Tissues in Arterial and Pulmonary Disease by : T. F. McDonald
Download or read book Connective Tissues in Arterial and Pulmonary Disease written by T. F. McDonald and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The processes of distention and recoil have an essential role in the functions of arteries and lungs. In both organ systems, these processes involve to a great extent the connective tissues, in particular the manner in which the extracellular materials are arranged to afford such movements. This book concerns the microenvironment of the connective tissues in the walls of arteries and the stroma of lungs. Proteoglycans, collagen, and elastic fibers and their interrelationships are discussed by eight scientists who are established researchers in this area. Their reports include important findings on how this microenvironment is altered in diseases such as atherosclerosis, emphysema, and pulmonary fibrosis. The concepts developed result from studies at the biochemical, macromolecular, ultrastructural, and light microscopic levels. Taken col lectively, the reports focus attention upon the role of the connective tissues in arterial and lung distensibility and how alterations in the connective tissues result in the loss of this function. Medical researchers and physicians interested in arterial or lung functions or diseases will find the scientific approaches and findings of the authors innovative and provocative. Students of stereologic morphometry will be particularly interested in the quantitative studies of cells and fibers in arterial walls; histologists and pathologists will find the chapter on histochemical staining interesting from both a scientific and historic viewpoint.
Book Synopsis New Therapies for Neonatal Respiratory Failure by : Bruce R. Boynton
Download or read book New Therapies for Neonatal Respiratory Failure written by Bruce R. Boynton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-11-25 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diagnosis and treatment of respiratory problems in the newborn have advanced significantly over recent years, although respiratory failure remains an important cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity. This book provides a comprehensive overview of respiratory physiology in the newborn, and of the mechanism underlying respiratory failure in this age group. It goes on to present in detail the techniques, both novel and well established, for effective ventilatory support. In presenting and evaluating the available treatment modalities, the authors consider not only clinical indications, modes of delivery and monitoring, but also complications and outcomes. Comprehensive and up to date, this is an essential handbook and reference for clinicians in neonatal medicine, that will help to optimise their management of respiratory failure in the newborn.

Book Synopsis Toxicology of Inhaled Materials by : H.P. Witschi
Download or read book Toxicology of Inhaled Materials written by H.P. Witschi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the methods and scientific basis of inhalation toxicology. It describes devices and facilities needed to expose animals to inhaled particles and gases as well as approaches to estimating or measuring the fraction of the inhaled material that is retained in the respiratory tract. The book then reviews the evergrowing repertoire of techniques that can be used to measure the responses elicited by the exposure. Quantitative and qualitative anatomical, physiological, and biochemical strategies are discussed in detail. We believe that the toxicology of inhaled materials is an important and timely topic for several'reasons. During the past decade, morbidity and mortality attributable to cardiovascular disease have significantly decreased. Progress in combatting cancer, the second most important cause of death, has been slower, and lung cancer actually became the leading cause of death in men and the second leading cause of cancer death in women. In addition, the incidence of non-neo plastic respiratory diseases such as emphysema, fibrosis, and chronic bronchitis has increased the past decade. In the United States, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has recently reported that chronic obstructive pulmonary disease affects nearly 10 miliion persons and accounts for 59,000 deaths yearly; indeed, it ranks as the fifth leading cause of death. Because the incidence is increasing, the NIH estimates that it may become the nation's fourth or even third leading cause of death by the year 2000.
