Book excerpt: A methodology to compute probabilistically-combined thermo-mechanical fatigue life of polymer matrix laminated composites has been developed and is demonstrated. Matrix degradation effects caused by long-term environmental exposure and mechanical/thermal cyclic loads are accounted for in the simulation process. A unified time-temperature-stress-dependent multifactor-interaction relationship developed at NASA Glenn Research Center has been used to model the degradation/aging of material properties due to cyclic loads. The fast probability-integration method is used to compute probabilistic distribution of response. Sensitivities of fatigue life reliability to uncertainties in the primitive random variables (e.g., constituent properties, fiber volume ratio, void volume ratio, ply thickness, etc.) computed and their significance in the reliability-based design for maximum life is discussed. The effect of variation in the thermal cyclic loads on the fatigue reliability for a (0/+/-45/90)s graphite/epoxy laminate with a ply thickness of 0.127 mm, with respect to impending failure modes has been studied. The results show that, at low mechanical-cyclic loads and low thermal-cyclic amplitudes, fatigue life for 0.999 reliability is most sensitive to matrix compressive strength, matrix modulus, thermal expansion coefficient, and ply thickness. Whereas at high mechanical-cyclic loads and high thermal-cyclic amplitudes, fatigue life at 0.999 reliability is more sensitive to the shear strength of matrix, longitudinal fiber modulus, matrix modulus, and ply thickness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermo-mechanical fatigue occurs when a component is exposed to thermal cycling under mechanical constraint and or superimposed mechanical loading. Thermo-mechanical loading is an increasingly common service condition for polymer matrix composite materials. Unfortunately, little or no information is available regarding the behavior of polymer composites subject to this loading condition. The present thesis research program was undertaken to evaluate the effects of mechanical constraint on the response of polymer matrix composites during thermal cycling. Analytical and experimental techniques were used to characterize the response of carbon fiber reinforced cyanate ester (IM6/ BT3008) and bismaleimide (IM7/5240-4) composites. Cross-ply laminates were subjected to thermal cycles from 24 to 177 deg C in the unconstrained, fully- constrained and over-constrained conditions. Laminate response, damage mechanisms and residual compressive properties were characterized for each material and degree of constraint. Predicted ply stress distributions are significantly different for the various degrees of constraint and are highly sensitive to temperature-dependent lamina properties and laminate stress free temperature. Predictions of laminate response correlate well with experimental results. Deviations are apparent at elevated temperature which are attributed to the effects of time-dependent deformation.

Book excerpt: The present research was undertaken to evaluate the effects of mechanical constraint on the response of polymer matrix composites during thermal cycling. Analytical and experimental techniques were used to characterize the response of carbon-fiber-reinforced cyanate ester and bismaleimide composites. Cross-ply laminates were subjected to thermal cycles from 24 to 177°C in the unconstrained, fully constrained, and overconstrained conditions. Laminate response, damage mechanisms, and residual compressive properties were characterized for each material and degree of constraint. The results of this research indicate that the level of constraint can have a significant effect on the response of polymer matrix composites during thermal cycling. However, longer-term testing is required to determine if the observed changes in response will ultimately affect the final failure mode and fatigue endurance of the materials.

Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive review of its kind on the long-term behaviour of composite materials and structures subjected to time variable mechanical, thermal, and chemical influences, a subject of critical importance to the design, development, and certification of high performance engineering structures. Specific topics examined include damage, damage characterization, and damage mechanics; fatigue testing and evaluation; fatigue behaviour of short and long fibre reinforced polymer and metal matrix materials; viscoelastic and moisture effects; delamination; statistical considerations; the modeling of cumulative damage development; and life prediction. The volume provides an extensive presentation of data, discussions, and comparisons on the behaviour of the major types of material systems in current use, as well as extensive analysis and modeling (including the first presentation of work not found elsewhere). The book will be of special interest to engineers concerned with reliability, maintainability, safety, certification, and damage tolerance; to materials developers concerned with making materials for long-term service, especially under severe loads and environments, and to lecturers, students, and researchers involved in material system design, performance, solid mechanics, fatigue, durability, and composite materials. The scope of the work extends from entry level material to the frontiers of the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guides researchers and practitioners toward developing highly reliable ceramic-matrix composites The book systematically introduces the thermomechanical fatigue behavior of fiber-reinforced ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) and environmental barrier coatings, including cyclic loading/unloading tensile behavior, cyclic fatigue behavior, dwell-fatigue behavior, thermomechanical fatigue behavior, and interface degradation behavior. It discusses experimental verification of CMCs and explains how to determine the thermomechanical properties. It also presents damage evolution models, lifetime prediction methods, and interface degradation rules. Thermomechanical Fatigue of Ceramic-Matrix Composites offers chapters covering unidirectional ceramic-matrix composites and cross-ply and 2D woven ceramic-matrix composites. For cyclic fatigue behavior of CMCs, it looks at the effects of fiber volume fraction, fatigue peak stress, fatigue stress ratio, matrix crack spacing, matrix crack mode, and woven structure on fatigue damage evolution. Both the Dwell-fatigue damage evolution and lifetime predictions models are introduced in the next chapter. Experimental comparisons of the cross-ply SiC/MAS composite, 2D SiC/SiC composite, and 2D NextelTM 720/Alumina composite are also included. Remaining sections examine: thermomechanical fatigue hysteresis loops; in-phase thermomechanical fatigue damage; out-of-phase thermomechanical fatigue; interface degradation models; and much more. -Offers unique content dedicated to thermomechanical fatigue behavior of ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) and environmental barrier coatings -Features comprehensive data tables and experimental verifications -Covers a highly application-oriented subject?CMCs are being increasingly utilized in jet engines, industrial turbines, and exhaust systems Thermomechanical Fatigue of Ceramic-Matrix Composites is an excellent book for developers and users of CMCs, as well as organizations involved in evaluation and characterization of CMCs. It will appeal to materials scientists, construction engineers, process engineers, and mechanical engineers.

Book excerpt: A methodology to compute cumulative probability distribution functions (CDF) of fatigue life for different ratios, r of applied stress to the laminate strength based on first ply failure criteria has been developed and demonstrated. Degradation effects due to long term environmental exposure and mechanical cyclic loads are considered in the simulation process. A unified time-stress dependent multi-factor interaction equation model developed at NASA Lewis Research Center has been used to account for the degradation/aging of material properties due to cyclic loads. Fast probability integration method is used to perform probabilistic simulation of uncertainties. Sensitivity of fatigue life reliability to uncertainties in the primitive random variables are computed and their significance in the reliability based design for maximum life is discussed. The results show that the graphite/epoxy (0/+45/90) deg laminate with ply thickness 0.125 in. has 500,000 cycles life for applied stress to laminate strength ratio of 0.6 and a reliability of 0.999. Also, the fatigue life reliability has been found to be most sensitive to the ply thickness and matrix tensile strength. Tighter quality controls must therefore be enforced on ply thickness and matrix strength in order to achieve high reliability of the structure. Shah, A. R. and Singhal, S. N. and Murthy, P. L.
