Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years considerable progress has been made in elucidating wood decay mechanisms. This basic knowledge not only has the potential to develop alternative environmentally-benign wood preservatives, but may also impact other areas such as bioremediation and pulp and paper. This book will summarize the latest knowledge of the developments, potential impacts, and applications from some of the world's leading experts.
Book Synopsis Arsenic in Drinking Water by : National Research Council
Download or read book Arsenic in Drinking Water written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-12-26 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having safe drinking water is important to all Americans. The Environmental Protection Agency's decision in the summer of 2001 to delay implementing a new, more stringent standard for the maximum allowable level for arsenic in drinking water generated a great deal of criticism and controversy. Ultimately at issue were newer data on arsenic beyond those that had been examined in a 1999 National Research Council report. EPA asked the National Research Council for an evaluation of the new data available. The committee's analyses and conclusions are presented in Arsenic in Drinking Water: 2001 Update. New epidemiological studies are critically evaluated, as are new experimental data that provide information on how and at what level arsenic in drinking water can lead to cancer. The report's findings are consistent with those of the 1999 report that found high risks of cancer at the previous federal standard of 50 parts per billion. In fact, the new report concludes that men and women who consume water containing 3 parts per billion of arsenic daily have about a 1 in 1,000 increased risk of developing bladder or lung cancer during their lifetime.
Download or read book Timber written by J.M. Dinwoodie and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-03-09 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timber: Its Nature and Behaviour adopts a materials science approach to timber and comprehensively examines the relationship between the performance of timber and its structure. This book explains a wide range of timbers physical and mechanical behaviour (including processing) in terms of its basic structure and its complex interaction with moisture. The performance of timber and panel products is also related to the levels set in new European specifications and with the associated methods of testing.

Book Synopsis Microdistribution of Chromated Copper Arsenate Preservative in Rubberwood (Hevea Brasiliensis Muell. Arg.) by : Ismail Bin Jusoh
Download or read book Microdistribution of Chromated Copper Arsenate Preservative in Rubberwood (Hevea Brasiliensis Muell. Arg.) written by Ismail Bin Jusoh and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rubberwood is popular for making indoor furniture since rubberwood is relatively abundant and sustainable. Currently more than 60% of the total annual rubberwood produced by rubber plantation is used as fuelwood. Rubberwood has the potential for both indoor and outdoor application. For exterior applications, preservative treatment is needed to extend the service life of rubberwood. The objectives of this study are to (1) assess treatability of rubberwood with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) preservative, (2) evaluate the natural decay resistance and efficacay of CCA on rubberwood, and (3) study the microdistribution of CCA components in rubberwood cells.
Book Synopsis Cell and Molecular Biology of Wood Formation by : Rodney A. Savidge

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of modern molecular biology techniques is providing new insight into wood formation and the seasonal nature of secondary growth in perennial woody plant species. Extensively illustrated, this new book provides a comprehensive and critical overview of current understanding about the biology of wood formation, with a focus on the development, regulation and biochemistry of cambial growth supplemented by additional considerations of the fundamental factors determining forest productivity, wood quality and heartwood formation.
