Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, supercritical fluids have emerged as more sustainable alternatives for the organic solvents often used in polymer processes. This is the first book emphasizing the potential of supercritical carbon dioxide for polymer processes from an engineering point of view. It develops a state-of-the-art overview on polymer fundamentals, polymerization reactions and polymer processing in supercritical carbon dioxide. The book covers topics in a multidisciplinary approach starting from polymer chemistry and thermodynamics, going through monitoring, polymerization processes and ending with polymer shaping and post-processing. The authors are internationally recognized experts from different fields in polymer reaction engineering in supercritical fluids. The book was initiated by the Working Party on Polymer Reaction Engineering of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering and further renowned international experts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has been considered as a practical way in sequestering the huge anthropogenic CO2 amount with a reasonable cost until a more pragmatic solution appears. The CCS can work as a bridge before fulfilling the no-CO2 era of the future by applying to large-scale CO2 emitting facilities. But CCS appears to lose some passion by the lack of progress in technical developments and in commercial success stories other than EOR. This is the time to go back to basics, starting from finding a solution in small steps. The CCS technology desperately needs far newer ideas and breakthroughs that can overcome earlier attempts through improving, modifying, and switching the known principles. This book tries to give some insight into developing an urgently needed technical breakthrough through the recent advances in CCS research, in addition to the available small steps like soil carbon sequestration. This book provides the fundamental and practical information for researchers and graduate students who want to review the current technical status and to bring in new ideas to the conventional CCS technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical-polymer compatibility is an important criterion in the development of solvent-based extraction and cleaning systems for removal of toxic contaminants from polymeric surfaces. The potential degradation of polymer properties and performance is especially critical for sensitive equipment cleaning, decontamination, and extraction. The candidate cleaning fluids for sensitive equipment include fluorinations and supercritical fluids. An overall material evaluation strategy has been developed for evaluating the degradation of polymer properties by exposure to supercritical fluids. The initial evaluation involves the measurement of the sorption and desorption diffusion coefficients in a spectrum of polymer compositions. The objective was to characterize the complete desorption process by the continuous measurement of the entire diffusion process. Another purpose of diffusion coefficient measurements was to provide an estimate of the time required for each material to completely adsorbs all of the carbon dioxide cleaning fluid and return the material to the original unplasticized condition. These measurements and calculations provided the high data density required to calculate a low concentration Fick's Law diffusion coefficient and equation for the extrapolations. The composition spectrum selected contains hydrogen bond donor, hydrogen bond acceptor, dipolar, and non-polar polymer structures. Over 20 thermoplastics and elastomers were studied with supercritical carbon dioxide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue of Membranes focuses on several new aspects of fluid transport in glassy polymers, with application in relevant membrane separations such as gas purification, VOC removal and CO2 capture. In particular, the focus lies on novel experimental techniques, and detailed characterization of specific phenomena like polar and multicomponent interactions during transport. The properties of novel materials, such as mixed matrix membranes based on glassy polymers and different selective fillers, are also presented. A critical review of existing modeling approaches to describe the sorption and transport in glassy polymers suitable for membrane separations is provided, including both macroscopic and atomistic models, and relying both on the standard solution–diffusion process and on the facilitated transport mechanism.
