Book excerpt: Rainbow trout were fed 9 weeks with 9 diets (2 replicates for each diet) design to study the effect of taurine and other related bioactive components included in low fish meal recipe on performances, nutrient digestibilities and taurine content in the fish. The SGR and FCR were not affected by the different recipes or components tested. Taurine content in the feed appear to have positive correlation with taurine body level without affecting lipid digestibility. Soybean meal was found to affect protein and carbohydrates digestibilities and to have a possible negative effect on bile salts synthesis and reabsorption. Taurocholate results needed some more analysis before conclude any statement. Results confirm that rainbow trout are able to synthesise taurine from cystine and moreover that the synthesis from the cystine might be preferred as the taurine uptake from the feed when the cystine level in the diet is high.

Book excerpt: Effects of dietary nucleotide supplementation on growth and feed efficiency in rainbow trout (initial weight = 25 g/fish) were conducted in a 70-day growth trial. One control diet and two basal diets (25%, 5% and 0% fish meal, respectively) were formulated using high levels of highly digestible plant protein ingredients to meet all the known nutrient requirements of rainbow trout. Two basal diets were supplemented with four increasing levels (0, 8, 16 and 24 ppm, respectively) of nucleotides using a commercial supplement (Laltide®, Lallemand Inc. Qc, Canada). Nucleotide supplementation levels significantly (p

Book excerpt: This text provides an important overview of the contributions of edible insects to ecological sustainability, livelihoods, nutrition and health, food culture and food systems around the world. While insect farming for both food and feed is rapidly increasing in popularity around the world, the role that wild insect species have played in the lives and societies of millions of people worldwide cannot be ignored. In order to represent this diversity, this work draws upon research conducted in a wide range of geographical locations and features a variety of different insect species. Edible insects in Sustainable Food Systems comprehensively covers the basic principles of entomology and population dynamics; edible insects and culture; nutrition and health; gastronomy; insects as animal feed; factors influencing preferences and acceptability of insects; environmental impacts and conservation; considerations for insect farming and policy and legislation. The book contains practical information for researchers, NGOs and international organizations, decision-makers, entrepreneurs and students.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special publication is designed to describe the basic elements of salmonid nutrition. Described are the requirements and functions of nutrients. The feed formulation for salmonids is described, together with the quality control parameters for the most important ingredients in salmonid diets. All fish feeds must be processed to produce feed particles of appropriate size for fish of different ages and sizes. The digestibility and balance of nutrients assumes greater importance in diets for fish because of the importance of preventing eutrophication and increasing the biological oxygen demand in the fish pond. Guides have been established indicating the amount of feed to give daily to fish of various sizes and water temperatures. Fish are poikilotherms whose body temperature, metabolic rate and feeding activity varies with the ambient water temperature. Feeding rates and growth rates are reduced as the temperature is decreased from 15 to 4 C.

Book excerpt: Aquaculture, the youngest, fastest-growing, and most dynamic protein-producing industry, has the key advantage of efficient use of feed that allows farmed fish to be competitively priced compared with terrestrial proteins. Sustainable Aquafeeds: Technological Innovation and Novel Ingredients explores the present and future evolution of feeds, explains the current challenges for aquaculture, and considers how advances in technologies and ingredients can produce aquafoods for the increasing world population. International contributors to this book provide state-of-the-art information on the profile of the aquafeed industry, including factors affecting supplies and prices of key ingredients for aquafeed production. An entire set of chapters covers the scientific advances and feed industry initiatives in accordance with modern consumer trends, updating readers on the most promising strategies. These include the use of novel ingredients for nutrient supplementation and the enhancement of their use by genetic selection. The authors hope to inspire a collaboration of NGOs, researchers, and private partnerships to replace wild-caught ingredients by accelerating and supporting the scaling of innovative, alternative, aquaculture feed ingredients, including bacterial meals, plant-based proteins, algae, and yeast.

Book excerpt: Applications of Seaweeds in Food and Nutrition provides an overview on the cultural, biological and engineering dimensions relating to seaweed as a food. With the need for sustainable and healthy foods growing, this comprehensive resource explores how seaweeds can deliver not only nutritional benefits, but also antiviral and antibacterial properties as a food additive and within food processing and manufacturing. Recent developments show that the use of seaweed extracts as a compound can prevent browning. It use in other areas such as a thickening and gelling agents in foods and cosmetics is also encouraging. There are hundreds of different varieties of seaweed known to mankind, yet very little literature is available on the processing of these "crops." This book provides these valuable and practical insights. Introduces the origin of seaweed consumption and its biology Examines common seaweed varieties of industrial interest and their chemical composition Explores the potential of robotics and AI techniques in seaweed aquaculture
