Book excerpt: A proposta deste estudo foi avaliar, apos 7, 5 anos (1985-1992), os efeitos de alguns sistemas de rotacao de culturas em plantio direto, em relacao ao plantio convencional de soja-trigo (Glycine max - Triticum aestivum) (CONV), sobre propriedades fisicas e niveis de fertilidade de um Latossolo Roxo eutrofico, em Londrina, PR e um Latossolo Roxo alico em Campo Mourao, PR, e seus efeitos sobre a producao de graos do trigo. Os seguintes sistemas de rotacao de culturas em plantio direto foram avaliados: DIR, soja-trigo; AVEIA, aveia (Avena strigosa) - soja-trigo; TMMLAV, tremoco (Lupinus angustifolius) -milho (Zea mays) -aveia-soja-trigo; TMML, tremoco-milho-soja-trigo. Em ambos os locais os resultados foram comparados com o solo sob vegetacao natural. O plantio direto no sistema AVEIA aumentou a densidade do solo (Ds) no sistema AVEIA, na camada de 0-5 cm, o que elevou a MIP (microporosidade) e reduziu a PT (porosidade total), MAP (macroporosidade) e Ks (condutividade hidraulica saturada); as mudancas nestes parametros provavelmente estiveram relacionadas ao manejo com rolo-faca na cultura da aveia. Apesar da mesmo pratica ter sido usada na cultura do tremoco, existem evidencias de que a atuacao do seu sistema radicular reduziu o efeito compactador desta operacao. O diametro medio geometrico (DMG) dos agregados do solo foi aumentado pelo uso dos adubos verdes de inverno, especialmente o tremoco no sistema TMML, resultando em incrementos, em relacao ao sistema CONV, de 25,9% em Campo Mourao e de 64,8% em Londrina, onde a estabilidade dos agregados do solo foi mais afetada pelo cultivo continuo. A estabilidade dos agregados do solo foi positivamente correlacionada com o aumento do C-organico e N-total no solo e nos agregados> 4,00 mm em Londrina, mas apenas com o N-total no solo e na classe de agregados> 4,00 mm em Campo Mourao, onde a reducao do pH e a elevacao das concentracoes de Al e H+Al foram positivamente e melhor correlacionadas com a estabilidade dos agregados do solo. Os sistemas de plantio direto elevaram os niveis de fertilidade, em relacao ao plantio convencional, na camada superficial do solo (0-4 cm), expressos por aumentos de pH, C-organico e N-total. Este efeito foi menos intenso nos sistemas onde a adubacao verde de inverno estava presente, e foi associado a ausencia de adubacao inorganica nestas culturas. A contribuicao do C-organico para a CTC pH 7,0 foi maior em Campo Mourao (4,60 meq/g) do que em Londrina (3,68 meq/g). A presenca do tremoco no sistema TMML aumentou a producao de graos do trigo em relacao ao sistema DIR, em 8% (275 kg/ha) em Londrina e em 44% (475 kg/ha) em Campo Mourao, onde o efeito foi significativo. Esse incremento de producao foi positivamente correlacionado com os aumentos do teor de N-total, na camada de 0-40 cm e do DMG, na camada de 0-10 cm, que foram maiores no sistema TMML. No nivel de manejo utilizado neste experimento ficou evidenciado que a estrutura do solo teve melhor relacao com a produtividade do trigo do que os parametros de fertilidade avaliados. Os resultados obtidos neste trabalho sugerem que a diversificacao de culturas em sistemas de rotacao, com diferentes sistemas radiculares e residuos, podem promover a recuperacao das propriedades fisicas e dos niveis de fertilidade do solo, resultando num ambiente favoravel para o desenvolvimento das culturas.

Book excerpt: Phytomass and Primary Production of the Various Vegetational Zones and of the Entire Biosphere The biosphere is that thin layer at the earth's surface in which living organisms exist and biological cycling takes place. It includes the upper horizons of the soil in which plants root, the atmosphere near the ground, (insofar as organisms penetrate this space), and all the surface waters. More than 99% of the earth's biomass is phytomass, to which we shall limit our discussion. Amounts of phytomass are distinctly related to vegeta tional zones. Because accurate determination of phytomass and primary production is difficult, only gross estimates have been available until recently. However, in 1970, Bazilevich et al. published (in Russian) more accurate calculations, based on the rapidly accumulating literature, for the various thermal zones and bioclimatic regions of the earth. These authors calculated mean phyto mass and mean annual primary production for the various regions as dry mass (in tons) per hectare. On the basis of measurements of the areas covered by the individual regions, excluding rivers, lakes, glaciers, and permanent snow, total phytomass and total annual primary production for the various regions were obtained (see table). The sum of these figures is the phytomass and annual production of the land surface of the earth. In addition, the table gives corresponding data for the waters of the earth. The values involved are potential i. e. , they are based on natural vegetation uninfluenced by man.

In a second printing in 1988 it was possible to complete a few literature references and to correct some misprints. However, vigorous research has taken place over the past five years in various areas of tropical climate dynamics, especially in the atmosphere-ocean mechanisms of climate anomalies, climate prediction, ocean circulation, and paleoclimates. Promising progress has also been made in the application of general circulation modelling to tropical climate problems. In the present second edition, named "Climate Dynamics of the Tropics", I have attempted to incorporate much of the recent work to late 1990. Chapters 8 and 9 have been essentially re-written, and major additions have been made to Chapters 4 and 12 in particular. I would like to acknowledge the continued support by the U.S. National Science Foundation over the past five years. B. Parthasarathy, Poona, and H.
