Book Synopsis The Atlantic Salmon in the History of North America by : R. W. Dunfield
Download or read book The Atlantic Salmon in the History of North America written by R. W. Dunfield and published by Fisheries and Oceans, Scientific Information and Publications Branch. This book was released on 1985 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) has occupied a salient position in the history of eastern North America for at least the past 1000 years. Initially the species occupied a prominant niche in the prolific web of life that existed throughout its former occurrence area; millions of pounds of salmon were produced annually from the freshwater streams between New York and Ungava - a resource that was a principal food source for the Amerindian cultures which shared its range. In a chronological and cumulative way, the salmon became an increasingly important factor in both the domestic and commercial life of the developing colonies; it provided a recreational outlet for the sportsman, and evolved as a principal object of intellectual and scientific investigation. The documented specifics of the salmon's history, however, are largely comprised of repetitive instances of overexploitation, careless destruction of stocks and their environment, and ineffectual conservation actions. Despite the species' former importance, its more recent history is one of declining presence, and its destiny appears to be extinction. By documenting this story of discovery, exploitation, and decline, the urgent need for the employment of sound resource management practices to preserve the salmon is emphasized. Appendix A: Historical methods of packing salmon.

Book Synopsis Silica Stories by : Christina De La Rocha
Download or read book Silica Stories written by Christina De La Rocha and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you know silica, the tetrahedra of silicon and oxygen constituting the crystals of New Agers and the desiccant in a box of new shoes? It's no mere mundane mineral. As chemically reacting silicate rocks, silica set off the chain of events known as the origin of life. As biomineralized opal, it is the cell wall, skeleton, spicules, and scales of organisms ornamenting numerous lobes of the tree of life. Cryptocrystalline silica made into stone tools helped drive the evolution of our hands and our capability for complex grammar, music, and mathematics. As quartz crystals, silica is impressively electric and ubiquitous in modern technology (think sonar, radios, telephones, ultrasound, and cheap but precise watches). Silica is inescapable when we take a drink or mow the lawn and it has already started to save the Earth from the carbon dioxide we're spewing into the atmosphere. This book tells these scientific tales and more, to give dear, modest silica its due.
Book Synopsis A Guide to the Geology of Southwestern Maine by : Arthur M. Hussey II
Download or read book A Guide to the Geology of Southwestern Maine written by Arthur M. Hussey II and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide is a significant addition to Maine's literature for the naturalist. Arthur Hussey, Bowdoin College Professor of Geology emeritus, has produced an insightful and lucid explanation of the geology of southwestern Maine. No prerequisites are required to fully understand and appreciate this book. Based on Hussey's fifty-five years of field study, this is a boot-on-the-ground guide that is every bit as good as a textbook on the subject, but far more engaging. Reading it is almost like hearing him speak and personal anecdotes enliven the narrative. The guide is well illustrated with Hussey's own photos, figures and maps. The table summarizing the geological events, glossary of terms and an index are valuable features. The reader will develop an understanding of the southwestern Maine's rock outcrops, its landscape and the forces that account for them.

Book Synopsis Atlantic Salmon in Maine by : National Research Council
Download or read book Atlantic Salmon in Maine written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-09-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the pervasive and substantial decline of Atlantic salmon populations in Maine over the past 150 years, and because they are close to extinction, a comprehensive statewide action should be taken now to ensure their survival. The populations of Atlantic salmon have declined drastically, from an estimated half million adult salmon returning to U.S. rivers each year in the early 1800s to perhaps as few as 1,000 in 2001. The report recommends implementing a formalized decision-making approach to establish priorities, evaluate options and coordinate plans for conserving and restoring the salmon.

This book was released on 2007-09-04 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New England archaeology has not always been everyone's cup of tea; only late in the Golden of nineteenth-century archaeology, as archaeology's focus turned westward, did a few pioneers look northward as well, causing a brief flurry of investigation and excavation. Between 1892 and 1894, Charles C. Willoughby did some exemplary excavations at three small burial sites in Bucksport, Orland, and Ellsworth, Maine, and made some models of that activity for exhibition at the Chicago World's Fair. These activities were encouraged by E Putnam, director of the Harvard Peabody Museum and head of anthropology at the "Columbian" Exposition. Even earlier, another director of the Peabody, Jeffries Wyman, spawned some real interest in the shellheaps of the Maine coast, but that did not last very long. Twentieth-century New England archaeology, specifically in Maine, was--for its first fifty years--rather low key too, with short-lived but important activity by Arlo and Oric (a Bates Harvard student) prior to World War Later, I. another Massachusetts institution, the Peabody Foundation at Andover, took some minor but responsible steps toward further understanding of the area's prehistoric past.
